SMUHSD's Board of Trustees invites you to its Thursday, May 9, 2019 regular meeting. 

The meeting highlights include presentations on the following topics of community interest:
  • Approval of the City of Burlingame/SMUHSD Aquatic Center Term Sheet
  • DELAC Annual Report
The meeting will take place at 7 p.m. at the San Mateo Adult School, 789 E. Poplar Avenue, San Mateo.

Awards and Achievements
SMUHSD Wrestlers Accomplishing Great Things

Congratulations to Mills High School Senior Wrestler Pipiana Langi who placed third in the Reno Worlds Wrestling Tournament in March, officially making her an All American.
Three additional wrestlers from the District also were given All American distinction:

  • Riina Smith, Aragon High School Junior, 4th place All American
  • Kristal Betanzo Hillsdale High School Senior, 6th place All American
  • Tuva Kagedal, San Mateo High School Senior, 3rd place All American

Pipiana also placed third in the California Freestyle Wrestling competition securing herself a spot on the California National Team, which will travel to the National Championships in North Dakota this Summer.

Kristal Betanzo of Hillsdale recently made the USA Senior Women's Beach Wrestling World Team and will be competing in the World Championships. Kristal is the youngest member of the team.
 
Additionally, three other SMUHSD wrestlers qualified for nationals:  
  • Kristal Betanzo of Hillsdale was named Northwestern Regional Champion and secured herself a spot on the California National Team 
  • Renato Berraza of Hillsdale placed 4th in the Northwestern Regional and secured a spot on the California National Team
  • Riina Smith of Aragon placed 5th at the California USA Wrestling freestyle state
Diana Betanzo is one of the Hillsdale High School wrestling coaches (and an Instructional Aide at the school) and she also coaches a club team in which these wrestlers participate.

San Mateo High School Students Present at Ecological Restoration Conference

SMHS Senior Patrick Yin, Zonghuan (Jason) Li, Kyle Zhang and Anu Hamsavardhini presented an ecological research poster at the 
California Society for Ecological Restoration  conference in Santa Barbara in early April. 

Catherine Brett, CuriOdyssey's Senior Educator and Science Research Manager, who attended the conference with the students, has supervised this research for the last two years. 

The research was titled, "Manual Removal and Herbicide Treatment for Maxiumum Limonium ramosissimum Reduction."

Aragon Siblings Named Athletes of the Week (April 16)

Megan and Cam Grant Congratulations to Aragon siblings, Megan and Cam Grant - they were named the San Mateo Daily Journal's Athletes of the Week.  Megan is a freshman on the softball team and  Cam is a senior on the baseball team. 

"The Dons softball and baseball teams have combined for 23 home runs this season (17 softball, six baseball) and just over half of those have been supplied by Daily Journal Athletes of the Week, siblings Megan and Cam Grant."




Sage Hager Named Daily Journal Athlete of the Week (April 23)
 
Congratulations to San Mateo High School sophomore Sage Hager, she was named the San Mateo Daily Journal Athlete of the Week for her pitching performances on the softball field.
 
"So far she's been nothing short of amazing on the mound," San Mateo head coach Alyssa Jepsen said. "Last week was definitely amazing for her."
 

Hillsdale Students Bring Home Awards in PSA Competition
 
Screenshot of Break the Stigma video Several Hillsdale High School students were selected as winners in the statewide Directing Change Mental Health Film Competition in April. Students were asked to create a PSA that addresses mental health awareness or suicide prevention. More than 1,000 films were submitted and winners were divided into different counties in California.
 
Hillsdale students Emily French, Sydney Lee, Morgan Robinson, and Carmen Vallin won first place in the Mental Health Matters category with their PSA "Break the Stigma," earning a $500 cash prize for the group and a grant for Hillsdale. This PSA will move on to Statewide judging, and winners are announced at a film screening in Los Angeles in May. 
 
Hillsdale students Drew Follansbee, Jared Estevez, Shayan Enayati, and Erick Claveria won 3rd place in the 'Suicide Prevention' category with their PSA, "We Care."

SMHS Recognized at Food Bank Awards

San Mateo High School was recognized by Second Harvest Food Bank for their extraordinary effort with a Golden Apple award.

The award was presented at the Food Bank's 2019 Make Hunger History awards event. 

Burlingame Robotics Named World Champions

BHS Robptics Team with their Championship Robot
Burlingame High School's Robotics Team - the Iron Panthers - took home the title of World Champions in FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) World Championship - a four-day competition held in Houston, Texas. The tournament took place from April 17 to April 20 and drew in more than 400 of the best robotics teams from around the world.

Shout out to the Iron Panthers and also to the Mills High School Robotics team - the Boba Bots - who placed 31st out of 67 teams.

SMUHSD News and Events 
Via Heart Screen 346 Teens at April Event

More than 100 volunteers participated in Via Heart's April 14 Screen-A-Teen event at San Mateo High School. 

Via Heart Screening Collage Check out these stats from the event:
  • 346 teens from across the District were screened with a health history review, blood pressure check, CPR/AED training,12 lead EKG, and cardiologist review.  
     
  • Via Heart was able to give echo cardiograms to 329 of the participants, which is an amazing number to perform in six hours.
      
  • 25 teens were referred for follow up to their primary care physician. 
Since launching its screening program in March 2015, Via Heart has screened 4,716 youth in Northern California and have identified 52 teens with potentially life threatening cardiac issues. 

Sudden cardiac arrest is the leading killer of high school athletes due to unidentified genetic heart defects. Through identification and treatment, Via Heart Project, their sponsors, and volunteers are saving young lives in our community.

SMUHSD Brings 65+ Industry Professionals to Career and Technical Education Days in March

This March , SMUHSD's Career and Technical Education (CTE) program held three Industry Days to help students create road maps to their potential career paths. On these days, students heard talks from leaders in thriving industries, participated in mock interviews and had their projects and portfolios reviewed by professionals. The events featured professionals in the following industries:
  • Arts, Media and Entertainment
  • Hospitality
  • Engineering, Architecture, Energy and Construction

Pulitzer Award Winning Author Visits SMUHSD

Ruby Rodriguez (a SMUHSD Alumni and teacher candidate) with her mom and  Sonia Nazario (center).

On April 8, two-time Pulitzer award winning author of Enrique's Journey, Sonia Nazario, spoke to San Mateo High School, Capuchino High School and Bridge program students about her book, which many of the district's students are currently reading. 

Sonia had this to say about her introduction by CHS student teacher Ruby Rodriguez, " The introduction by Ruby Karina Rodriguez at Capuchino was a dream come true for an author. It doesn't get better than that. Thank you for reminding me why I do this sometimes difficult work."

Rodriguez, an SMUHSD alumni, read Enrique's Journey when she was 16 and says it transformed her life. 
Capuchino's First Drag Show is a Success

Capuchino's Sexual and Gender Alliance (SAGA) Club held its first ever Drag Show in April. The event featured great performances by CHS students and staff, and audience engagement included "Drag Factoids." 
 
Students conveyed that the drag show was a great way to show the diversity within their community, stating that it helps spread awareness and knowledge while also being fun. 
 
Students also said, "Drag allows us to express ourselves on a whole other level than we usually can on a daily basis. We can learn a lot about ourselves from this experience."

Exploring College Opportunities Workshop: June 3-7

Do you have a a rising senior interested in learning more about college opportunities? If so, please encourage them to join fellow students at a free one-week workshop Exploring College Opportunities. 

This workshop is presented by SMUHSD College and Career Advisors - June 3-7 from 9 a.m.-noon (location TBD).

Topics and activities will include:
  • Four-year college options (including what makes a college a good social, academic, financial and environmental "fit")
  • Exploring Career interests
  • Matching majors to colleges
  • Financial aid and tips for talking with a parent about money
  • Hear from current college students

Summer Opportunities - Students Can Get High School and College Credit This Summer


The San Mateo Union High School District is partnering with the College of San Mateo to offer five summer enrichment courses in which students can earn both community college and high school credits for free.

The following courses are open to ALL SMUHSD students and will be taught at San Mateo High School: 
  • Introduction to Film
  • Introduction to Business
  • Public Speaking
  • Digital Media Center Pathways
  • College and Academic Success. 

Classes run from  June 10-25 (session 1) and  June 26-July 12 (session 2 - no school July 4).

San Mateo High School Students Raise Funds for Global Giving


Students at San Mateo High School hosted Mateo Thrift on April 19.  Proceeds raised at this event went to Global Giving for Puerto Rico Rehabilitation.
Hillsdale High School Offers Peace Pantry

On May 1, Hillsdale High School introduced its Peace Pantry. The Peace Pantry was established by staff and PTSO members in response to the  dramatic rise in cost of living in the community. 

On the first and third Monday of each month, designated families will receive a care package to last two weeks. In addition, the Peace Pantry will include seasonal items which support families with additional needs. In August, they are hoping to stock the pantry with school supplies and in December they will look to include essential items to support families for the winter months.

Capuchino High School Students Create "It's On Us" Video

Inspired by the It's On Us campaign, a Capuchino High School student, with the help of CHS staff and her peers, created a PSA to bring more awareness to stopping sexual assault. 

It's on Us is an organization that supports awareness to stop sexual assault. The lead student in this image wanted to create a video and more awareness with lunch time activities. She had students sign a poster to stand up/bring awareness for sexual assault and had a day to decorate t-shirts with words of encouragement.

3rd Annual Event to Raise Awareness of the Importance of Mental Health is May 11

Stride for Awareness (SFA) and the San Mateo Police Activities League (SMPAL) are pleased to announce their 3rd Annual 5k Run/Walk and Resource Fair on Saturday, May 11 at Coyote Point. 

With the goal of creating  a safe society while promoting the physical, social and mental well-being of our youth, SMPAL and SFA brings you this 5k Run/Walk to promote the importance of Student Health and Mental Wellness; Healthy Mind, Body and Community.  


Community Conversations: Housing in San Mateo - May 18

How is the issue of housing affecting you and those you care about? Join the City of San Mateo for a different type of dialogue about housing in the community on   Saturday, May 18, 2019 .  

"Community Conversations: Housing in San Mateo" is a joint effort between the City and  Home for All, a San Mateo County collaborative aimed at helping the community talk more constructively about the shared challenge of housing. 

The goal is to create an inclusive environment for dialogue where all people are welcome to share their perspectives. This effort starts with you!
