Howard Community College's Arts Collective Presents "Making Advances: Revealing Stories About Gender & Sexual Identity"
Today - Sunday, June 17th
Tickets are $15 for general admission and $10 for students, seniors, faculty, staff, and military.
Visit our  website.

Howard Community College's (HCC) Arts Collective concludes its 23rd season with its eighth original devised work, "Making Advances: Revealing Stories About Gender & Sexual Identity." This production, conceived by the cast and creatives, will take place June 7-17, in the Studio Theatre located within the Horowitz Visual and Performing Arts Center (HVPA).

Arts Collective (AC) invites audiences to journey through unparalleled and unexpected styles of storytelling where gender and sexual identity are at its very core. The premiere of this original play will speak to how we see each other, how we want to be seen, and how we simply are - through self-discovery, censorship, provocation, and appropriation. "Making Advances" will engage, expand, and continue this necessary, ever-evolving, ever-revolving conversation - through evocative and imaginative movement, lighting, sound, media, costumes, with text woven throughout (stories familiar... or not), which will surprise, transcend, and explore these themes between the here and now to the ethereal.

Performances will take place in the Horowitz Visual and Performing Arts Center's Studio Theatre, located at Howard Community College, 10901 Little Patuxent Parkway, Columbia, Maryland 21044. The show's duration is approximately two hours, with one intermission. There will be special post-show discussions at the Sunday, June 10 and Sunday, June 17 performances.

Parental guidance note: No one under 14 years of age will be admitted.

Tickets are $15 for general admission and $10 for students, seniors, faculty, staff, and military. For tickets, visit www.howardcc.edu/artscollective/originaldevisedplay or call 443-518-1500. The box office will also be open 90 minutes prior to each show time and Tuesday through Friday from 12 to 5 p.m.

Surface & Structure features works by artists Sooo-z Mastropietro and Chloe Irla. Both artists create mixed-media work that often incorporates various textile materials. Mastropietro's artwork is made from fiber tubes and she uses the medium to represent the way in which parts of the sum inevitably give way to the whole of bigger parts. Chloe Irla's mixed-media paintings incorporate textile elements combined with acrylic paints and digital printing to create intricate, richly textured works.

Exhibit runs now- June 22, with a free reception on June 21 from 6-8pm in conjunction with the Columbia Festival of the Arts including entertainment by All County Improv at 6:30pm and Resident Artists' Open Studios from 7-8pm.

MOSQUITO PROBLEMS?  LOOK AT HOW YOU ARE YOU DIRECTING WATER ACROSS YOUR PROPERTY

Those black flexible downspout extensions are often used to direct water away from the foundation of your house. Inexpensive and easy to install, these seem like a simple solution to redirect water. Did you know that corrugated drain extensions are a perfect breeding ground for mosquitos? When water flows out of the extension tubing, some will naturally get trapped in the grooves. Mosquitos only need a small amount of water to breed hundreds of larvae.

Also, you may not be aware that these hoses are not permitted to be run above ground, as per the covenants. All drainage hoses, tubes or pipes must be buried below ground or in a landscape bed and should not dump out anywhere near the property line. Using splash blocks, river rock or similar materials at the end of a straight, short, 24" downspout extension is highly recommended. Questions? Contact your Village Covenant Advisor.
