Making a Difference for Mississippi at AAFP Conferences
Six family physicians traveled to Kansas City last week to represent the MAFP at the American Academy of Family Physicians meetings.

Dr. James Griffin of New Augusta, vice president, attended AAFP's Annual Chapter Leader Forum April 24-26. Along with Beth Embry, executive director, he learned about board leadership and attended plenary sessions and awards luncheons. MAFP was recognized with four awards for retaining and recruiting members in 2018.

Five other physicians took part in the AAFP National Conference of Constituency Leaders, which garners involvement for traditionally under-served parts of the AAFP membership, including women, minorities, international medical graduates, LGBTQ physicians and new physicians. Mississippi was proud to send a delegate for each constituency this year. Drs. Lakeisha  Chism of Verona, Anna Marie Hailey-Sharp of Preston, Tobe Momah of Jackson, Katie Patterson of Indianola, and Jeremy Wells of Hattiesburg attended.

" I learned how to write resolutions and I learned the process of how issues that affect under-represented groups in medicine are brought to the attention of the AAFP in order to bring about change," Dr. Chism said. "Listening to and learning from other physicians across the United States helped me to think of health care on a more national and global scale."

"Mississippi was well-represented in all the constituency groups," Dr. Wells said. "At these national events, we are on equal footing, if not higher, because of MAFP's efforts to have full attendance - only half of states sent a full delegation to this conference and we were one of them."

Collaborating with physicians from other states was a benefit, Dr. Momah said. "I was very impressed with the camaradarie displayed at the NCCL," he said. "I enjoyed the speeches from the AAFP president, CMS regional director, and the guest speaker from Swedish Medical in Seattle, Washington, on burnout."

The conference was impressive, Dr. Hailey-Sharp said. "I learned so much about different viewpoints, writing resolutions, and how important it is for family physicians from across the country to come together to improve policies that will, in turn, allow us to provide better care for our patients."

"It truly is an eye-opening, valuable experience," Dr. Chism said. "Above all else, what an honor and privilege to represent the wonderful state of Mississippi!"

Images in Mississippi Medicine Sales Benefit MAFP Foundation
Interested in a great Mother's Day or Father's Day gift? The Images in Mississippi Medicine hardcover book will definitely be a hit! Authored by our own Dr. Luke Lampton and MSMA's Karen Evers, the photos and text are well-researched and insightful.

"I am enchanted by this book and have enjoyed reading about the history of medicine in Mississippi," said Glenda Sharpe of Hattiesburg Clinic, who recently purchased 6 books. "I  know the physicians I am giving it to will appreciate it...and love it as much as I do."

Books are available from the MAFP for $50 each, or if you donate $70, you can be a member of the '70 for 70' Club with your book purchase.

Brandon Senior Wins Scholarship
Mitchell
Sarah Mitchell, a Brandon High School senior, has been awarded the David G. Hall, MD, Memorial Scholarship for 2019 as the winner of the MAFP Foundation's essay contest.

Mitchell will receive $1,000 in scholarship money to attend the University of Southern Mississippi, where she plans to major in biochemistry.

The essay contest theme was "The Family Physician: Providing Your Medical Home."   "Before Dr. [Howard] Clark opened the Clark Medical Clinic in 1956, there was not another practicing physician in town," Sarah Mitchell's winning essay read. "Dr. Clark is a perfect example of the importance of family physicians and how they strengthen various aspects of a community. By practicing medicine in a small town that needed a family doctor, he not only provided quality health care, but he contributed to the community."

This scholarship is just one of several provided each year by the MAFP Foundation that helps promote family medicine as a specialty.
