     FAA Process Moving Ahead
It has been a long time since the Select Committee on SFO Arrivals finished their work in November 2016. Since then I have been working with our federal representatives to see the recommendations of the Select Committee adopted by the FAA. All three Congressional representatives who convened the Select Committee are still in support of the recommendations. Last year the FAA made some progress on a technical committee but did not complete the work necessary to actualize the most significant recommendation of moving the jet path back to its historic route. When I was in Washington, D.C. in October, I met with FAA representatives who thought that the technical committee would reconvene in January. Unfortunately the government shutdown, change in FAA Administrator, and the 737 Max Jet issues have caused delays in the technical committee meeting. We have just received an update from the FAA which you can read here.  The good news is that the technical committee will be meeting in June. In addition, the new South Bay Roundtable is scheduled to meet in Santa Cruz the same month, which could be time for us all to receive an update. I will continue to advocate for final action on moving the jet path.
Soquel Creek Water District Seeking to Put Facility in Live Oak
The Soquel Creek Water District has been working to identify an additional source of water for several years. Although they have a new intertie with the City of Santa Cruz, this intertie won't provide enough water to address the overdraft issues in the district. The District is seeking to recycle wastewater to provide the additional water needed to replenish the main drinking water aquifer which is in critical overdraft and at risk of sea water intrusion. Current wastewater at the Santa Cruz Wastewater Treatment plan would be treated to an even higher standard than currently done at the existing location and then pumped to a proposed new facility. The District has been seeking a facility to do the final treatment of the odorless water and has identified a site in Live Oak at Chanticleer and Soquel Avenue (across from the Center for Public Safety). I had advocated that this spot could be used for a development that could support the proposed medical facility down the street. While final plans are not in place, the District will be holding two public meetings about their plans. I encourage Live Oak residents to come and share your questions and concerns with the District.

Dominican Hospital Seeks to Remodel
Dominican Hospital will be submitting plans to update their hospital to modernize their facility and provide better parking for patients and staff.  There will be a slight decrease in the number of beds as they seek to create more private rooms. The main building will grow to three stories, and they are looking to build a two-story garage off of Mission Drive. They will be holding a public meeting about their plans on

The Live Oak Library Annex
Libraries play an increasingly important role in communities as centers for learning, social gathering and creativity. The Live Oak Library Annex at the Simpkins Swim and Community Center offers the opportunity to expand access to library programming and life-long learning in the heart of Live Oak, co-located at the Simpkins Swim and Community Center.   The vision for the Live Oak Library Annex is to create a community gathering and learning hub. Three community meetings have helped shape the plans for the Annex, which is proposed to include flexible program space, a classroom, study rooms, public computers and laptop bar, and a new plaza integrated into Simpkins Swim and Community Center. These improvements will support a wide range of library and enrichment programs for the benefit of the community for years to come.   You are invited to attend a community meeting and an open house to review the proposed concept plans, share your thoughts, and learn more about the new Live Oak Library Annex on  Tuesday, May 28, 2019  from  7:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Live Oak Elementary School Multipurpose Room.   For more information contact Damon Adlao, Project Manager at 454-2343.
Family Movie Night Series Is Back
The County's second annual Family Movie Night Series is back by popular demand at the Heart of Soquel Plaza Park.  Thanks to a recent sponsorship from Kaiser Permanente, we have been able to add a second location at the Felt Street Park. Please join us on the first and third Fridays starting in June to see some great movies with your families, neighbors and friends.  On June 7 Incredibles 2 will be shown at the Heart of Soquel Plaza Park.  On June 21, Spider Man - Into the Universe will be shown at Felt Street Park.  The complete list of movies and scheduled dates are below. Bring your lawn chair, blanket, and a sweater and join us under the stars as admission and parking is FREE

You can also support the fundraising efforts of local schools for their ancilliary programs by purchasing baked goodies and other snacks during the movies. Mountain Elementary School's Parent Club is hoping to purchase books for their brand new 2019-2020 5th grade class.  Also, the Live Oak Education Foundation will be fundraising to enrich opportunities in the visual and performing arts along with their STEM program (science, technology, engineering and mathematics),  and positive play. While all of the movies begin at dusk, I would like to encourage you to come and have some dinner beforehand at some of the delicious Soquel Village restaurants or from the food trucks that will be on hand at both locations.   If you or your business is interested in sponsoring one of our future series, please contact my office.  Many thanks again to Kaiser Permanente for their generosity!
