After the Fires, A New Rector for Kenwood

The Rev. Doyle Dietz Allen knows all about heat, having grown up in Texas, and coming from Tucson, Arizona, where she was called to be assistant to the rector at St. Alban's in 2013 after being ordained in the Diocese of Fort Worth. But soon after she agreed to be rector of St. Patrick's, Kenwood, in early October 2017, she got a call saying her new church was being evacuated because wildfires were spreading through the area.
It wasn't quite the warm welcome she was expecting. But as soon as she determined the call wasn't a hoax, she began calling the leadership of the 90-member congregation and tried to determine what she could do even before she was due to start.
She flew out as soon as the airport in Santa Rosa reopened, and boots on the ground, she assessed the situation (the buildings had escaped the fire, but would require substantial cleanup), gave what comfort she could to the three families in the parish who lost homes in fire, saw 15 houses with a real estate agent, and found a home for herself, her consultant husband Tom and their Siberian Husky puppy Kita in Oakmont, a community near St. Patrick's.
Her 20-plus years in the business world, both a staffing professional and running a crisis center for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault that served seven counties in east Texas, have contributed to her calm demeanor in the face of chaos, and she feels she is now in precisely the right place.
"It is so beautiful here," she said recently, looking out from the café across the highway from the church. "It's the ideal blend of people who are really on fire for ministry, have skills developed over a lifetime and lots of energy." If anything, she'd like to focus some of that energy on fewer projects and greater development of relationships with the community "and with Christ."
Priest Doyle had never been to Northern California before visiting St. Patrick's when she interviewed in September. Now, she says with a hearty laugh, "I can't imagine living anywhere else!"

Bishop Barry Beisner has canonical responsibility related to bringing clergy to this diocese to serve our congregations. To that end, Bishop Barry and Canon Andrea McMillin work with applicant review committees and vestries during the discernment process: creating a parish profile that reflects the current situation and hopes for new leadership, recruiting and screening applicants, and guiding congregations in the healthy discernment and calling of new priests to our diocese.

Are You Called to Serve on the Transition Committee?
The Standing Committee is seeking persons interested in being considered for appointment to the Transition Committee for the search for the 8th Bishop of the Diocese of Northern California.
Under the oversight of the Standing Committee of the Diocese, the Transition Committee will be charged with a minimum of the following responsibilities:
- Planning and conducting the "walkabouts" (the visits of the finalists and their spouses and partners) prior to the election
- Support and assist the Standing Committee to hold the electing convention
- Assist the Presiding Bishop's Office in the planning of the Consecration service
- Planning and conducting two major hospitality events on the weekend of the Consecration
- Assist in helping the bishop elect's smooth transition into the diocese
- Provide attentive pastoral care and thanks to the candidates not elected
It is anticipated that the work of the committee will begin shortly after General Convention, which will be July 5-13, in Austin, Texas, and continue until our next bishop has been consecrated. The date for the consecration of the 8th bishop of our diocese is June 29, 2019.

Register for CDD Week-Long Session, June 10-15
The weekend sessions of CCD are full; the first session will be this weekend, April 6-8. Please keep the 50 participants in your prayers as they learn to develop healthy communities of faith together.
There's still time to register for the week-long intensive session at the Bishop's Ranch, June 10-15.
Check-in begins on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. and the program begins at 2 p.m. The session ends on Friday at 4 p.m.

One More Month to Apply for Pathways! Deadline is April 30
Here's why Madeline Parranto of Incarnation, Santa Rosa, is returning to Pathways:
"I really enjoy learning about social justice problems and then seeing how I can help make this world a better place for everyone. We can help out in the world just by educating people about what has happened... I learned so much from the trip, and the leaders and other participants were great to be around. I got lucky, as I made some pretty solid relationships with people I am still in contact with today. The people I meet and all the lessons I learn make me a better person, and help me live out of love, and not hate or fear. I can't wait to take part in Pathways!"
Besides visiting the Bodega Bay Marine Laboratory, the Marine Mammal Center, the Marin Headlands and Angel Island, we'll get to spend two days with the Rt. Rev. Katharine Jefferts Schori as we join with her in conversation about faith and science, and to talk more about ways to equip ourselves to be "climate ministers" working for environmental justice and reconciliation with our earth.
Camper scholarships in the amount of $200 are available to 60 children and youth who are active in their congregation.

Diocesan Anti-Racism Training: April 21
The second Diocesan Anti-Racism Training of this year will be 10 a.m.- 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 21, at St. Mary's, Napa. This year's event will be facilitated by leaders from the
Kaleidoscope Institute
and provides an opportunity to come together as congregational leaders to learn how to help our worship communities appreciate and welcome the great diversity of people among us and around us, and to develop tools to work against the forces of racism in our world.
Anti-Racism Training is required for all who are engaged in ministries of governance (diocesan boards and commissions, as well as vestries and mission committees) and licensed lay ministers.
This event is free, and lunch is included, but registration is required.

3rd Annual
Diocesan Children and Youth Minister's Retreat
This year's retreat, which will be May 3-4 at The Bishop's Ranch, will be led by the Rev. Dr. Susanna Singer, who teaches Christian education at CDSP. She will lead us in learning about equipping ourselves for engaging in the communities around us, and we will also spend time developing plans for the coming year, as well as strengthening our relationships with others doing this work around the diocese.

St. Francis, Fair Oaks, Final Service on Saturday, April 14
The Rev. Joseph Duggan, priest-in-charge of St. Francis, Fair Oaks, since Sept. 2012, announced that its final service will be at 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 14. The vestry voted to close the church, which they announced at the annual meeting in January.

Deacon Phina Leads Community Ministry Class Online
Join the Rev. Josephine (Phina) Borgeson in a CDSP CALL
course that explores disciplined reflection as a way of making connections beyond the gathered church and the church's traditions, and emphasizesthe importance of communicating our insights to our congregations.

St. Patrick's Day Brings a Pot O'Gold for Haiti School
A concert featuring Molly's Revenge and Celtic dancers captivated a crowd of more than 100 on March 18 at St. Augustine of Canterbury, Rocklin, reports parishioner Barbara Woolman. The concert, a delicious corned beef dinner and an auction of Haitian art and artifacts raised more than $5,200 for St. Luc Episcopal School projects and an additional $726 in direct donations to St. Luc scholarships. St. Luc is St. Augustine of Canterbury's partner in
Thomassique, Haiti.
