Grant Review Panel Meeting Dates
Community Investment Grants and Festival Grants
Each year, the Arizona Commission on the Arts convenes volunteer panelists from across the state to review applications for Community Investment Grants and Festival Grants. These meetings are open to the public and offer a prime opportunity for current and prospective applicants to learn more about the qualities of successful, competitive grant applications.
Panel review meetings will be held at the offices of the Arizona Commission on the Arts (417 W. Roosevelt St., Phoenix, AZ 85003) at 10:00 am, beginning with a panel orientation and general business. Grant review discussion will begin at approximately 10:30 am.

High School Student from Tucson Heading to Poetry Out Loud National Finals
Introducing Edgardo Aguilar, 2019 Poetry Out Loud State Champion
Edgardo Aguilar, a senior at Desert View High School in Tucson, will represent Arizona at the 14th Annual Poetry Out Loud National Finals competition in Washington, DC, April 30-May 1, 2019.
A total of $50,000 in scholarship awards and school stipends are awarded at the Poetry Out Loud National Finals, with a $20,000 college scholarship award for the National Champion.
A program of the National Endowment for the Arts and The Poetry Foundation, Poetry Out Loud is a poetry recitation competition delivered in high schools in all 50 states and three territories through partnerships with State Arts Agencies.
Arizona’s Poetry Out Loud program is managed by the Arizona Commission on the Arts, an agency of the State of Arizona, with support from regional partners, University of Arizona Poetry Center, Phonetic Spit, and William Cordeiro, PhD, a Flagstaff-based poet and lecturer at Northern Arizona University.

Dance in the Desert 2019
Latinx dancemakers from across Arizona will gather in Tucson from May 15-19, 2019, for the second annual convening of
Dance in the Desert, a unique opportunity for the Latinx dance community to come together, deepen relationships, and expand research for the field.
This year’s Dance in the Desert will engage Arizona-based Latinx choreographers and dancers in a choreography retreat and professional development series that will support the development of new work. The gathering will feature workshops by renown choreographers Liz Lerman and Ana Maria Alvarez.
Conceived and organized by Tucson-based choreographer and dancer Yvonne Montoya, the inaugural Dance in the Desert was a first of its kind convening for Latinx dance artists of the region. In its second year, Montoya hopes to deepen the conversation around the community’s unique assets and potential.
The Arizona Commission on the Arts is once again proud to partner with Montoya, Safos Dance Theatre, Projecting All Voices, an initiative of the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts supported by ASU Gammage, and Liz Lerman, LLC, to co-present this gathering.

Arizona Artists receive $25,000 NALAC Fund for the Arts Grants
Playwright Virginia Grise and theater artist Manny Rivera were awarded a $25,000 Mentorship Award by the National Association of Latino Arts & Cultures, the largest-ever grant awarded by the organization. Grise will work with Rivera to stage an adaptation of Helena Maria Viramontes’ novel,
Their Dogs Came with Them at the Perryville Women’s Prison in Goodyear, Arizona, and Borderlands Theater in Tucson, Arizona.

Tucson Poet Laureate Receives Academy of American Poets Laureate Fellowship
Tucson Poet Laureate TC Tolbert has been named an Academy of American Poets Laureate Fellow. Tolbert will receive a $100,000 award in recognition of their literary merit and to support civic programs. Tolbert is one of 13 state or local poets laureate nationwide to be honored. With the fellowship funds, Tolbert will conduct a series of workshops and create a series of public installations highlighting TNBQ and LGBTQ+ voices and issues across Tucson.

New Report: Arts and Culture Contribute $9 Billion to Arizona’s Economy

According to new data released last month by the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) and the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), Arizona’s arts and culture industries contribute $9.3 Billion to the state’s economy, employing nearly 90,000 Arizonans who earned a combined $4.9 Billion in Fiscal Year 2016, contributing more to the State’s economy than mining, agriculture, and utilities combined.
Produced by the BEA and NEA, the
Arts and Cultural Production Satellite Account (ACPSA) tracks the annual economic impact of arts and cultural production, both commercial and nonprofit, nationally and at the state level. The ACPSA reports on the total market value of goods and services as a contribution to gross domestic product (GDP) as well as employment and compensation for 35 key industries within the arts and cultural economy.
