Keep on the Sunny Side this January @ the Music School

Next month, the lives and music of the Carter Family are showcased in a free Bach's Lunch lecture and concert at Concord Community Music School.

On Thursday, January 4, Music School faculty member David Surette presents "The Unbroken Circle: the Carter Family and the roots of Americana." The Carter Family and their classic music were present at many of the signal events of acoustic roots music in the 20th century. From the dawn of the recording industry and the rise of radio, to the birth of commercial country music, the folk revival of the 1960s, and the acoustic revival of the new millennium, this humble trio from Virginia played a fascinating part. Come and learn more, as David's lecture-with musical examples - tells this many-faceted story.

Isa Burke
The following Thursday, January 11, David Surette joins Susie Burke and special guest Isa Burke for a concert entitled "Keep On the Sunny Side: the timeless music of the Carter Family." The Carter Family repertoire is one of the true touchstones of American roots music. Their music blends elements of folk, old-time, blues, and gospel music, and was a direct influence on the development of bluegrass music in the 40s (Bill Monroe), the folk revival of the 60s (Bob Dylan), and the Americana movement of the 21st century (Gillian Welch). Susie and David will present a choice selection of some of their Carter Family favorites.

Bach's Lunch programs are free and open to the public, and take place from 12:10 to 12:50 p.m. on the first and second Thursdays of each month, November through May, in the Music School's Recital Hall, 23 Wall Street, downtown Concord.
