CoLA Weekly

  March 30, 2018

Last weekend's ARTSGALA was simply amazing. Over 750 guests filled our Creative Arts Center to enjoy an evening of entertainment by our incredible students in the fine and performing arts and to raise significant scholarship funds to help them succeed. Our students made us proud and it was great to see such strong community support of them and Wright State.  Don't miss this highlights article and video to get a feel for the magic of the evening.

Last week I had the opportunity to participate in Wright State's marathon 3 day strategic planning session. Over 100 participants drawn from faculty, staff, students and the community came together to talk about our vision for the future of Wright State and how we can get there. It was invigorating (and exhausting, but mostly invigorating) to meet new people and discover that we all share a commitment to the future success of this university and a willingness to work together to reach our goals. I heard over and over, "it's all about the students," which is certainly a value we all share. The experience left me optimistic (and tired, but mostly optimistic) about the strategic planning process, the community it is building, and the future of our university. CoLA's own Mike Wiehe and our Applied Policy Research Institute had a major role in organizing the sessions, sorting through all the ideas, and keeping us on task. As you can imagine, it was not easy, but they did a great job.

Congratulations to this year's CoLA Awards recipients.  We have so many accomplished faculty and staff in the college that it can be hard to select the top recipients.  Great Job All!

Internships are so valuable for our students, and CoLA offers many of them here in the local area. We also offer attractive internship opportunities a little farther away from home, and one such wonderful program is the Washington Center Internship in Washington, DC. This program offers guaranteed internship placement, a course with academic credit, furnished housing, a variety of guest lectures and briefings, as well as opportunities for professional development and networking. Political Science/International Studies major Stephanie Patino-Garfias will be participating in the Washington Center Internship for 8 weeks this summer alongside students from around the country and world who are all passionate about global issues. She will live in a furnished home on George Washington University's campus, just steps from the White House and Department of State. The Fund for American Studies is sponsoring Stephanie's academic internship program with a $5,000 scholarship - the largest scholarship given.

Students who are looking for internship opportunities like this one can contact Lee Hannah. Please remember to also refer your students to Wayne Stark in CLASS for a wide range of internship opportunities and other career-development needs.
