Cooking for a cause (aka Chef d’Equipe)

Now read on a bit even if you’re an amateur or a junior rider, we need some help from you on this too. 
Chefing is not nearly as intimidating or time consuming as one thinks it may be. In Zone 6, Patrice Urban is the coordinator for all the programs that require a Chef d'Equipe and handles all of the paperwork and responsibility leading up to the championships. The responsibilities of the Chef at that championship include encouraging team spirit, helping guide the participants to events and through the schedule at the championships, selecting order of go, communications, etc., etc.
  
So you may ask why am I writing about this. We have traditionally had a problem when it comes to championships. We’ve had great chefs with great results, but it’s been a bit tough getting someone lined up, flirting with far to late in selecting that person. 

Here is what we on the Zone committee would love to have happen. If trainers know they have a student that is trying to get qualified for one of these championships, or if you do qualify and decide you are going, please tell us. Even if you don’t really want to be a Chef we would love the opportunity to talk you into it.

Riders, don’t assume your trainer has told us. Please encourage them to apply because there are benefits for you. There are a couple benefits for you in volunteering or being forced into it (you won’t be forced). First, your name will be publicized as Chef. Secondly, Chefs are allocated funds for reimbursement to help cover their costs to attend the Championships. So, if you're planning to attend this could cover the cost of your trainer attending if they are a Chef.

-Zones 5 & 6 Jumper Team Championships
-Zones 5 & 6 Platinum Jumper Championships
-Zones 5 & 6 Children's and Adult Amateur Hunter Championships
-FEI Jumping North American Youth Championships
-USEF Pony Jumper Championships
-Neue Schule/USEF Junior Jumper National Championships

Zone 6 Handy Hunter Challenges coming up
The USHJA Zone 6 Handy Hunter Challenges test skills riders and their horses might use during an enjoyable day of foxhunting combining the elements of flat and over-fences classes. There are several challenges coming up next month:

  • May 16-19, MHJA Horse Show
  • May 29-June 2, Springtime Sunshine at Quail Run

Sport History: Fun facts from the USHJA Wheeler Museum
The Lindsay Maxwell Charitable Fund/USHJA Emerging Athletes Program follows a tradition of successfully mentoring young riders under the guidance of legendary riders.

In 1984, a USET developing riders training session taught by Italian Olympian Piero d’Inzeo (center) featured future national and international grand prix stars (from left) Debbi Connor, Anne Kursinski, Leslie Burr Howard, Norman Dello Joio, Joan Scharffenberger, Eric Hasbrouck, Melanie Smith Taylor, Jeffery Welles, Katherine Burdsall, Hugh Mutch, and Louis Jacobs. These training sessions were held a few times a year, with riders chosen from regional selection trials overseen by USET coach Bertalan de Némethy.
