Marsh Creek Bridge Project Wins National Award

Supervisor Burgis is excited to report that the Marsh Creek Road Bridge Replacement project has recently been selected by the American Public Works Association (national organization) as one of the Projects of the Year for 2019 in the category of Transportation for less than $5 million.

The notification email from the national office in Kansas City states "Your selection puts you in a very elite group of winners and APWA is proud to have those on this project epitomize the public works profession and our association." This award is the national version of a similar honor this project was awarded back in February by the NorCal Chapter of APWA.



Meals on Wheels Ride-Along

In recognition of National Volunteer Week and March for Meals, Supervisor Burgis spent the morning on a ride-along with Meals on Wheels volunteers and  Susannah Meyer, Community Engagement Director.

As a former Meals on Wheels volunteer, Supervisor Burgis was glad to be with and recognize the many volunteers who deliver meals and visit with seniors on a weekly basis.

Thank you to Meals on Wheels Diablo Region for all you do to address senior hunger and isolation.

Red Cross Sound The Alarm Luncheon

The American Red Cross of the Bay Area honored nine fire districts and three community members and organizations from Contra Costa County for their acts of courage and compassion at the Sound the Alarm Kickoff Luncheon.  

The event was held on Tuesday at the Round Hill Country Club.   Dan Ashley  of ABC7 News was the Master of Ceremonies, and the San Ramon Valley Firefighters Honor Guard was the color guard for the event.

The county's nine fire districts were recognized for their life-saving work when disaster strikes our community, and the collaboration and support for Sound the Alarm activities. Also, these community members and organizations will be recognized for their acts of bravery and assistance in times of need. 

Honorees are featured below.

  • Disaster Services Award: Samantha Barnhouse (Antioch)
  • Community Service Award: San Damiano Retreat (Danville)


 









 
Cleaner Contra Costa Challenge


Contra Costa County Cities of Antioch, San Pablo, and Walnut Creek, and Sustainable Contra Costa are launching a new online platform, the Cleaner Contra Costa Challenge, to help residents create an even cleaner, healthier community.

The Cleaner Contra Costa Challenge is available countywide, with outreach campaigns to engage residents. Challenge participants measure their household carbon footprint online, commit to taking sustainable actions, track improvements, and save money!

Not everyone can make it to the polls on Election Day, which is why you have the ability to vote early both in person and by mail.
 
Voting by mail gives you flexibility in casting and returning your ballot. It's simple too. Ballots are mailed 29 days before Election Day along with voting instructions and information on how to return your ballot. 

Place your marked ballot in the return envelope and seal it. Be sure to sign the addressed return envelope. Without a signature the ballot cannot be counted.

So it does, for the planting of trees is an action that yields a long-range benefit on generations to come. Arbor Day uniquely symbolizes the truth that the earth belongs to every generation, not just to ours.

Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta National Heritage Area Legislation

Supervisor Burgis    celebrated the successful passing of the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta National Heritage Area, which was proposed in legislation by Congressman John Garamendi (H.R. 357) and Senator Diane Feinstein (S. 316) in early 2019, which was included as a provision of S. 47 (John D. Dingell, Jr. Conservation, Management, and Recreation Act). It passed by both houses of Congress this past Fe bruary & it was signed into law by President Trump on March 12th.

"Congressman Garamendi was kind enough to honor and recognize those of us that have served past and present on the Delta Protection Commission and supported his 10+ years of effort that it took to get this designation.. (I have served on the DPC representing the cities of Contra Costa & Solano Counties while on the Oakley City Council & now as a County Supervisor) My predecessor, Supervisor Mary Piepho was recognized as well." Said Burgis.

National Heritage Areas (NHAs) are designated by Congress as places where natural, cultural, and historic resources combine to form a cohesive, nationally important landscape. NHAs are lived-in landscapes. Consequently, NHA entities collaborate with communities to determine how to make heritage relevant to local interests and needs.NHAs are a grassroots, community-driven approach to heritage conservation and economic development. Through public-private partnerships, NHA entities support historic preservation, natural resource conservation, recreation, heritage tourism, and educational projects. Leveraging funds and long-term support for projects, NHA partnerships foster pride of place and an enduring stewardship ethic. NHAs have no effect on water rights, property rights, or hunting and fishing rights within the designated area.

Delta Counties Caucus

The DCC works to give one voice to the Delta.

The California Delta region is made up of five counties -- Contra Costa, Sacramento, San Joaquin, Solano and Yolo -- and is home to over four million people. The Caucus allows legislators to maintain a more united voice on important issues affecting the region by keeping them updated, briefed and educated while also providing a venue for collaboration with various public and state entities.

"Our goals are to improve the Delta ecosystem, provide a more reliable water supply for the State,  protect and enhance Delta communities, and reduce reliance on the Delta.  Essentially addressing the provisions and mandates set forth in the 2009 Delta Reform Act." Burgis said.

Working with local, state, and federal stakeholders to develop and implement solutions that address California's water management issues in a comprehensive, sustainable manner.

The DCC supports a diversified approach to addressing CA's long-term water needs.
 




California Habitat Conservation Planning Coalition 

As Chair of the East Contra Costa County Habitat Conservancy, Supervisor Burgis was honored to welcome conservation leaders from around the state to the California Habitat Conservation Planning Coalition 2019 Annual Meeting.

Antioch 2019 State of the City

Help us Sound the Alarm about Fire Safety * May 1st


Every day, 7 people die and another 36 people suffer injuries because of home fires. You can help change that and prevent these tragedies. 

To save lives and reduce fire-related injuries, the American Red Cross launched a nationwide Home Fire Campaign. The Red Cross is teaming up with fire departments, volunteers, and partners to Sound the  Alarm with home fire safety and smoke alarm installation events in communities across our county. 

Join us in one of the following roles: 
* Canvassers by phone or in person - this is done ahead of time
* Smoke Alarm Installer - Conduct home visits, test existing smoke alarms, replace batteries, and install smoke alarms using a drill. 
* Disaster Safety Educator - Provide live-saving education and assist residents in completing a home fire escape plan. 
* Documenter - Complete service acknowledgment forms and reports for campaign tracking, and assist educator and installer as needed. 
* Driver - Transport installation teams and supplies to and from headquarters and residences. 
* Restocking supply bags - this is done post event to get ready for the next session
* Data Entry - this is done post event to input all the necessary information

CCRMC Clothing Closet Needs

Our clothing closet at Contra Costa Regional Medical Center needs donations of NEW (in package or with tags still on) socks and underwear for homeless patients  who need clothing when they are discharged from the hospital.

Black crew socks with toe and heel reinforcement are preferred. We particularly need for large and extra-large men's underwear.
