VIDEO: Community teams up for student success at new Education Town Hall events
|
Roughly 350 Folsom Cordova stakeholders - parents, students, teachers, employees, and community members - recently invested their evenings and weekends to examine school achievement data, and brainstorm ways they can work together to improve student success.
Over the course of five "Education Town Halls" - a new stakeholder engagement initiative coordinated by the school district from December through February - teams of stakeholders from all school communities were assembled to study and discuss everything from math and English-language arts test scores, suspension rates, graduation rates, college prep course completion, school climate survey results, and more.
The process was designed to help the District better understand its strengths and weaknesses as it seeks to revise its annual
Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP)
. The LCAP is a state-mandated document that must be updated each year to ensure that the District not only is targeting its services and expenditures toward our highest-need students, but also to measure whether those actions are meeting the desired outcomes.
Throughout the Education Town Halls, more than 1,300 thoughts, ideas, and questions were shared in six different languages.

| Russell Ranch named 2018 Calif. Distinguished School |
Congratulations to Russell Ranch Elementary
for being named one of the 2018 California Distinguished Schools by the California Department of Education.
Russell Ranch was one of 287 schools in the entire state of California and one of six schools in the Sacramento region chosen for this top honor.
The California Distinguished Schools Program recognizes elementary schools that have made exceptional gains in implementing academic content and performance standards adopted by the State Board of Education.
"I'm very proud of our Russell Ranch students, families and staff (classified and certificated) who, together, earn this incredible distinction and honor. This award helps to highlight our academic gains, excellent teaching, learning and collaborating school wide, in addition to recognizing our positive school climate and behavior interventions," said
Principal Joanie Cunningham.
"Russell Ranch works hard to share exemplary practices having a positive impact on student outcomes at a variety of academic levels throughout our school. This recognition helps to validate the valuable work we do on a daily basis," Cunningham said.

Oak Chan Elementary Principal Kat Bahry was named the 2018 Educator of the Year at the
Folsom Chamber's annual awards luncheon March 22 at Lakeside Church.
"
Folsom Cordova is filled with so many amazing educators. I have the honor of working with them each and every day. To be recognized by our district and local Chamber of Commerce is astonishing; words cannot express how truly grateful I am," Bahry said.
"I have had inspiring mentors and wonderful support. I am proud to call myself an educator. My aspiration is to fittingly represent my colleagues and staff members; celebrating their dedication, hard work, and tireless effort in making a positive impact on children's lives, " she said.
Bahry has been teaching for Folsom Cordova schools for 20 years. She started as a substitute teacher, then taught in her own classrooms at Cordova Lane, Cordova Gardens and Mather Heights Academy, until she became Oak Chan's Principal in 2015. She holds an undergraduate and graduate degrees in Criminal Justice and a masters in Education Instruction and Curriculum as well as various professional certificates.

Join us for Drug Awareness Forums & learn warning signs
|
Join us for a conversation with experts and law enforcement about local drug trends among youth on Monday, April 9 in Folsom or Monday, April 23 in Rancho Cordova.
A community panel will discuss trends in drug abuse including Xanax, marijuana, alcohol, vaping and other substances, as well as resources available in the community, and ways to support your child.
The Drug Awareness Forum on April 9 is being held at Folsom High Theater from 5:30 to 7:45 p.m.
The Drug Awareness Forum on April 23 is being held at Cordova High's Performing Arts Center from 5:30 to 7:45 p.m.
Dinner and childcare will be provided at both forums for those who attend.

VIDEO: Russell Ranch students put on talent show for seniors
|
Students from Russell Ranch Elementary put on a talent show for seniors at the Folsom Senior Center on Feb. 23.
The event was organized by Sutter Middle 8th grader Kylie Dunn, who planned and coordinated the event with the school and senior center as part of a Take Action Girl Scouts
Project to earn her Silver Award.
Kylie got food donations for the event for seniors to enjoy, organized the acts and music, wrote scripts for the show, and advertised the event. One of the seniors even made friendship bracelets for each student that participated in the show. It is a great example of students and the community coming together to spread happiness.

| FHS Gay-Straight Alliance holds Parent Information Night |
 The Gay-Straight Alliance of Folsom High invites you to hear from a variety of speakers regarding issues and resources relevant to the LGBT youth in our community.
A Parent Night is being held on Tue. April 10 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. in the Jill Solberg Theatre at Folsom High. Food will be served in the lobby at 6 and the presentations begin at 6:30.

FCEA & FCUSD Joint Negotiations Update: March 2018
|
Bargaining team members from FCUSD and the Folsom Cordova Education Association (FCEA), which represents about 1,200 teachers, counselors, and other certificated staff throughout the District, met last month for a regularly scheduled bargaining session.
Team members discussed a compensation proposal, job descriptions, special education issues and signed several Memorandums of Understanding.

The City of Rancho Cordova is asking residents and businesses to help be their eyes in the community.
If you see something, report it using Fresh Connect, the city's online reporting system. Simply snap a photo and send it via the city's website or mobile app, and get an update once the problem is resolved.

Cordova High presents Little Shop of Horrors
Cordova High's Drama Department presents the musical Little Shop of Horrors.
Book and lyrics by Howard Ashman. Music by Alan Menken.
Cordova High has not produced a musical in 20 years, and the production of Little Shop of Horrors was made possible by a grant from the American Theatre Wing.
Shows run Thursday April 12 and Friday April 13 at 7 p.m. Saturday April 14, there is a show at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.
Cordova High is located at 2239 Chase Drive in Rancho Cordova.

The FCUSD Board of Education will hold its regular meeting on Thursday, April 19 at 6 p.m. in the Education Services Center Board Room, 1965 Birkmont Drive in Rancho Cordova.
