Series:  "The Uprising Begins of Stewardship"

Sermon:  " Part One - Finding Our Priorities"

Scripture : John 21:13-17
I Timothy 6:11-16

This Sunday
This Sunday we continue the theme of insurrections that bring resurrection, creating the kind of "uprising" that can bring transformation. In other words, it's taking the Easter message to the next level and offering next steps in bringing the love of God, the grace of God, the spirit of Christ and offering it more tangibly to the world. As a part of this next step we will begin a focus on stewardship, but with the reminder that stewardship isn't just about the way we handle our financial resources. That is certainly a part of it, yet the handling of other resources can and should carry as much weight as that of money.   So, this Sunday we set the foundation for what Godly stewardship looks like. Godly stewardship comes in a variety of flavors, from financial to global, time, relationships, and yes, even the stewardship of our own priorities. Business guru Peter Drucker made the discovery of our priorities simple. He said simply, "Priorities are what you do." So, for this Sunday I'll begin with these questions: Where do we spend our time? What do we think about? Where do we spend our money? The we answer those three simple questions will help each of us understand our priorities. But it also begs for at least one more question. In honestly answering those questions, are the answers what you want, need, hope your priorities are? If not, what are the changes that might be needed in order to create the priorities you hope to hold? As Christians, it also begs for one more question, what were the priorities of Jesus and do ours then reflect his? That is a much tougher question. So let's explore it this Sunday and see where this goes. To prepare please read both John 21:13-17 and I Timothy 6:11-16.
PASTOR'S BLOG
Next Steps after Our Vote  to Become
a Reconciling Congregation
Rev. Laura Baumgartner

It's been a little more than two weeks since our vote to join the Reconciling Ministries Network (RMN). Those two weeks have been action-packed, with Easter and so much more. However that doesn't mean that nothing's happened since the vote.

The committee that has been called the Considering Reconciling Committee (CRC) began work almost immediately on filling out the paperwork for RMN to join. One part of the paperwork is to write an inclusion statement that we will use on our website and other publications. The committee is meeting on Monday April 29 at 6:00 pm to review the drafts that have been developed so far. Hopefully, the leading draft will be shared later that evening with the Core Leaders who meet at 7:00. Once those two groups have had a chance to approve a draft, it will be published in the e-news for the congregation to read and review. We want to make sure that this statement accurately represents what the majority of the congregation voted to do and that the process of moving forward is transparent so everyone is aware of what's happening and able to provide input as they are called to do so.

Once the paperwork is filled out, and the membership is official then the real work begins. As we have said many times, there is no one way that we must proceed with living into our decision to become Reconciling. However, there are a few steps that are predictable. We will need to continue to educate ourselves about how we can live out the welcome we have voted to extend. We may decide we need to host some events intended to help with that education process. A new banner or sign may be designed for the narthex that includes the new inclusion statement. There may be advocacy activities that some people from our congregation wish to engage in with other Reconciling Congregations in the area. One possibility might be that a group from Aldersgate could participate with the other United Methodist Churches who march in one of the Pride parades in the area. Another possibility would be that we may have a group who wish to become more involved in the Pacific Northwest or Western Jurisdiction proceedings that have begun to both resist from within and birth something new as a result of the exclusive language and punishments that General Conference 2019 adopted in February. None of these suggestions are set in stone. However they are possibilities that you may want to know about. If you are interested in any or all of them, or if you have other ideas, your voice is needed at this time.

The CRC has been designing a discernment and decision-making process. Some people who have been on CRC will continue to be leaders in the next steps. However new voices and new leaders are also needed as we move forward and the work of living as Reconciling starts to become part of the way we go about our normal activities. Please continue to pray for our church as we take our next steps down this road. Pray about how you can be part of the process of moving us forward in love with great joy, acceptance, inclusion, and respect.

Finally, if you are not feeling called to this ministry, rest assured that there are many other ways that you can be part of the congregation at Aldersgate as well. You and your interests and strengths are valued and important to us as you are, for the sake of the coming of the reign of God and because you are a beloved child of God. Not everyone will take leadership roles in all things and that is good and how it should be. Not everyone will even agree on all things, which is also good and how it should be. We are the body of Christ together, in our diversity. When we say we welcome all, we mean all.

Pastor's Class Resumes
Wednesday May 1
The Pastor's Class will begin on Wednesday,  May 1 . There will be two classes, one at 10:00am and another at 7:00pm. The title is, "A Marriage of Christianity." No, this is not a class to build a stronger marriage between potential spouses. The focus of the class is to build a stronger "marriage" between faithful disciples who disagree, sometimes strongly. It is about how to stay together in the midst of our differing pasts, understandings and beliefs. As we know, marriage is hard, complex, even complicated. It involves compromise, trust and understanding. So it is this time in our denomination. So, given that we do not all agree, even here at Aldersgate, we will go through some of Pastor Brad's own premarital counseling techniques to see if we can make our congregational, and even denominational marriages work. The class will explore our beliefs, our personal theologies, histories, and scripture. We will explore Jesus, and Paul, and others. We will explore John Wesley and how the interpretations of his standards have been redefined and interpreted today. Some of those lay at the foundation for the deepest denominational disagreements . Contact Pastor Brad if you have questions.

Summer Worship Schedule for 2019
This summer, our Worship Team has decided to hold one worship service each Sunday at 10:00am from July 7 through September 1. We will worship together as one body at one time for all of July and August and on Labor Day weekend. We will move back to two services on September 8. The exact format of the services is not yet known. Worship team is working on making sure there is still time for all our musicians to take a vacation, and also for special music that has long been a favorite in second service during the summer. Our pastors are also working on what the summer sermon series will be and how best to design a single service around themes that relate to those series. Some weeks may feel more contemporary and some may feel more traditional, but every week will be an opportunity to praise God together with joy and thanksgiving. We hope you will be here whenever it's possible with your summer activity schedule.
Volunteer @ VBS 2019
We need many volunteers at all different levels to make Vacation Bible School a success.  Prayerfully consider helping out prior to VBS, during VBS (Monday-Thursday, July 22-25) or at the church picnic (Sunday July 28).  There are opportunities to work directly with kids, completely behind the scenes, and everything in between.  Talk to Jen and see how your gifts could best be utilized at Vacation Bible School.  VBS is a great outreach into our community and an extremely important time within our church by deepening relationships new and old and focusing on how we can be bold with our faith and go beyond the ordinary.
Member's Devotional Published
Caralynn Hampson, a youth member of Aldersgate, recently had a 4-day devotional published on Our Bible App.  Check it out at  https://www.ourbibleapp.com/new-blog/autistic-prayer .  Please note, to read the entire 4-day devotional, you will have to download the app.
Coffee Cup Experiment
We are experimenting with coffee cups and you are the Guinea pigs. We have new biodegradable, compostable cups and lids provided for your use during refreshment time between services. Please note, these are one-time use cups only - do not refill and reuse. If your cup happens to leak, please leave it in the kitchen so we can track leakage. Thank you for your patience and cooperation.
