Greetings,
As I write this, Regina just experienced a very early spring  snowstorm. The big positive from having another large accumulation of snow is that our parched ground will soak up the much-needed moisture. As winter officially wound down, our association's One Book One Province program did the same. SLA's Board eagerly awaits the One Book One Province committee's report in a few weeks but early accounts are that the month-long program was another success. I followed the program on Twitter and I was impressed with what occurred. The program is a great method to support creating a reading culture and provide opportunities for Saskatchewan residents to become more socially engaged in their community through a shared story.
One Book One Province partners to thank include McNally Robinson Booksellers, MacIntyre Purcell Publishing, Inc., Saskatchewan Writer's Guild, The Saskatchewan German Council, The Museums Association of Saskatchewan, author Amy Jo Ehman, and all the libraries and community organizations that participated and hosted events. Special thanks go to SLA Program Coordinator Anne Pennylegion and the One Book committee volunteers and chair, Colleen Murphy, for their tireless work to make the program a reality.

SLA Continuing Education Committee Announces Winter 2018 Grant Recipients
The Continuing Education (CE) committee recently met and adjudicated the Winter 2018 grant applications. These recipients received approval for the following grants:
- Category 1: Jenny Ryan (Saskatoon Public Library), Katie Dermody (Saskatoon Public Library)
- Category 3: Tawney Johnson (Lampton Public Library), Heather Epp (Saskatoon Public Library)
Applications for Continuing Education Grants Due August 15, 2018
SLA offers CE grants to provide and support relevant educational opportunities for its members. Applications for CE category one and two grants are now being accepted. All applications are due by August 15th, 2018. Details are available on the

Conference News- Extended Deadlines!!
Only few weeks until registration closes for the CFLA-FCAB National Forum and Saskatchewan Libraries Conference.
Early Bird Deadline extended to April 7, 2018 with a final registration deadline of April 18, 2018.

The Mary Donaldson Memorial Lecture Speaker has been announced
Mohamed Fahmy is a multi-award winning Egyptian-Canadian
 author and journalist, speaking on topics such as freedom of expression, militant Islam, terrorism, human rights, corporate media responsibility, journalism in conflict zones, extremism, and Middle East politics.
Fahmy escaped from Kuwait with his family during the first Gulf War in 1990. He entered Iraq on the first day of the war in 2003 with the Los Angeles Times. He spent 15 years reporting from the Middle East and North Africa for CNN, BBC, and Al Jazeera English, and completed a one-year stint in 2007 with the International Committee for the Red Cross protecting the rights of political prisoners, the missing, and refugees in Beirut.

Attention Volunteers!
SLA 2018 is looking for volunteers to support an assortment of activities at this year's conference. We need charismatic speakers to introduce our wonderful presenters, tech-savvy minds to provide AV and technology support, and friendly faces to staff the registration table. We're also looking for gregarious guests to coordinate some of our social events, and creatively-inclined individuals to photograph the conference. Great volunteers help to make a conference fantastic, and it takes a range of talents to get the job done. One Book One Province 2018: Three Days, Three Events

I had the opportunity to attend three One Book One Province events, all of which included a reading from Amy Jo Ehman. The events at the m
âmawêyatitân centre, Albert Branch of the Regina Public Library, the Fort Qu'Appelle and the Qu'Appelle Branches of the Southeast Regional Library all captured the essence of this year's program - community coming together to reflect on Saskatchewan history and share stories of food, culture and tradition.

Each event had a unique character.In Regina, following Amy Jo's reading and discussion, the group enjoyed a variety of foods prepared by Scott Collegiate students. In Fort Qu'Appelle a community member with expertise in traditional food, Rosella Archdale demonstrated blending meat and berries through pounding. The group shared samples of delicious food while learning. Qu'Appelle had yet another approach. Following Amy Jo's reading the large group of community members engaged in lively conversation about their experiences, customs and memories related to food preparation and enjoyed and enjoyed a buffet of that included Chinese, German, Hungarian and Irish foods.
The atmosphere at each of these gatherings was warm and engaging rich in recollection and appreciation. Many thanks to Wendy Sinclair, Malinda Heard, Elizabeth Fries and Amy Jo!

Discovery
Professional career and activities:
I received a BA in English from the University of Regina in 2003 and a combined MLIS and MA in Humanities Computing from the University of Alberta in 2008. I began my career in libraries during my undergraduate degree, working part-time at Regina Public Library. After finishing my MLIS, I was hired on at the University of Alberta Libraries, first as an academic intern, followed by several years as a Public Services Librarian in the Health Sciences Library and a bit of time in an acting role as Digital Initiatives Applications Librarian. In 2014, I returned to Saskatchewan as an Integrated Library System Administrator at SILS. I have always had an interest in technology services in libraries, and I am excited to join the U of R team.
Favorite book:
It's been a while since I read it, but my all-time favourite is still
Watership Down by Richard Adams.
In my spare time:
I have two daughters age 5 and 3, so much of my time is spent playing with them (and, nowadays, driving them to activities).
I'm currently reading:
Dawn of the New Everything: Encounters with Reality and Virtual Reality by Jaron Lanier.

Legal Sourcery: Four Years On
Legal Sourcery, the Law Society of Saskatchewan Library's award winning blog, is turning four! The blog was an effort to better promote the library, market the library's services and resources, and develop stronger connections with lawyers and the public. Four years later, Legal Sourcery has exceeded our expectations. With almost 1500 posts and 240,000 views, the blog has been awarded three Canadian Law Blog Awards (Clawbies) in 2014, 2015, and 2017. It has helped raise the profile of the library both within the Law Society and throughout Saskatchewan's legal community, shape a visible and reenergised library brand, and position the library at the centre of legal information initiatives in the province. CAPAL18: Community, Diversity, and Education: Academic Librarianship in Challenging Times.
Held in conjunction with Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences 2018, the fifth annual conference of the Canadian Association of Professional Academic Librarians will be held at the University of Regina in Regina, Saskatchewan.

Everyone, Including Culture, Wins When You Buy Lottery Tickets
The core funding that SLA receives through SaskCulture is part of the Lottery Trust where a percentage of every lottery ticket sold goes to support sport, culture and recreation groups within Saskatchewan. It appears that recent lottery sales are not meeting expectations, which will not have an immediate effect on SLA. However we encourage you to remind audiences and arts council members that buying lottery tickets benefits the entire community. Saskatchewan Lotteries has also launched an app that you can download in the App Store or Google Play. More information is available on the Saskatchewan Lotteries website.
