Upcoming Worship Services
|
Sunday, January 26, 2020 at 10:30 am: Looking Back, Looking Forward Rev. Marcus Hartlief Seventy years ago, the first meeting of the Unitarian Fellowship of Marin was held. A lifetime has passed since that first gathering in 1950, and our congregation has seen generations come and go. As we envision how to build our power to inspire joy and justice for the next 70 years, what strength can we draw from looking back?

70th Anniversary Celebration
January 25
th Open House & January 26th Sunday Service
|
|
A 70th Anniversary Party will commemorate the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Marin's long history in Marin - from 1950 to 2020 - with an Open House on Saturday, January 25, 2020, from 4:00 to 7:00 pm, and a special Sunday service on January 26, 2020, at 10:30 am.
Saturday, January 25, you're invited to an open house that will celebrate our past and envision our future. Enjoy appetizers recreated from the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, 00s, and 10s! Explore what we anticipate from 2020 into the future. Special activities will include a passport for children to collect stamps from each of the decades, a puppet show, and other craft activities to enjoy. Adults will enjoy celebrating with live jazz and chamber music along with a slide show of key moments in the history of the congregation. Dancing lessons will help bring back memories with a playlist from the past decades.
On Sunday, January 26, at 10:30 am, the congregation will honor more than 20 long-term members who have been a vital part of our community over their lifetimes. UUCM member and Marin Poet Laureate Terry Lucas will share his poem commemorating the contributions of UUCM to the wider community over its 70-year history. Co-chairs Joan Smith and Kat Braeman invite you to be a part of the celebration.

Race: the Power of an Illusion - Film and Discussion co-sponsored by Social Justice and Adult Education Committees
January 26 Episode II "The Story We Tell"
February 9 Episode III "The House We Live In"
All sessions will be 12:15-2:00 pm in the Fireside Room.
In these sessions, we will view and discuss each of the hour-long segments of this powerful DVD that explores what race really is. In the words of the producer, the "hope is to clear away the biological underbrush and leave starkly visible the underlying social, economic, and political conditions that disproportionally channel advantages and opportunities to white people."
The discussions will be led by The Reverend Theresa Novak and Anne Spatola.

Soul Matters Small Groups
|
Now is the time to join a Soul Matters group! Soul Matters groups are our small group ministry, sometimes known as chalice circles or covenant groups. New Soul Matters groups are forming now and will begin meeting in February.
Soul Matters Groups allow members and friends to join a group of 6-10 people, lead by trained facilitators, who meet once a month. Participants receive a packet on the monthly worship theme. The meetings use a structured format to create a space for sharing the things in life that are really important to us, and deepen our connections with each other. We recommend that people participating in this program commit to going to each monthly meeting, and make a one-year commitment. You do not need to be a UUCM member to join a group.
To sign up, fill out a form available in the foyer or email Rich Cohen at
rccohen57@gmail.com by January 26th.

Remarkable People Returns:
Mark Your Calendar for Friday, February 21st!
|
This ongoing series gives us time to learn about each other from the interesting stories of individual lives in an evening of sharing and community.
Each person talks briefly, followed by time for questions and general sociability and some sustaining snacks.
Jean Bee Chan and Ken Ross will be our Remarkable People for February.
You might know Jean Bee Chan as the energetic and effective fundraiser who has made our recent Auctions shine with success. But you may not know the story of her childhood journey from Southern China to life in China, Hong Kong and then to the US in 1956. You can also find out about her recent completion of an illustrated children's book.
And you probably know that Ken Ross is Jean Bee's husband (and also an agent of auction success). A Professor Emeritus from the University of Oregon, he might also tell a story about how families can be full of surprises. He didn't become a Mormon even though he grew up in Salt Lake City.
Come on February 21st to learn more.
Watch this space for more details: We will have other Remarkables to learn from on March 20, April 17, and May 15.

Help Feed Our Homeless Neighbors
|
On February 11, UUCM will be providing food for the Street Chaplaincy Dinner. Approximately 80 homeless people attend these dinners.
We partner with congregants from Rodef Sholom, who provide the main course.
We will be responsible for salads, dessert and "take home" foods.
If you would like to supply some foods for the dinner guests to take, please bring them to the UUCM kitchen on Sunday, Feb 9. Suggested items are tangerines, apples, hard boiled eggs, string cheese, cookies, nutrition bars.

The Poetry Connection's feature on Valentine's Day is the Open-Mic Reading, Love on the Line, February 14th at 7:00 p.m. in the Fireside Room. Bring a poem you love (one-page maximum) that you'll read aloud and something sweet you love to eat to add to Jerene De Laney's world-famous red velvet cake for refreshments.
Bringing someone you love is recommended, but not required.
