There are a handful of popular songs that have become cliche and shorthand for filmmakers wishing to take us back to the trauma of the Vietnam War: Jimi Hendrix's cover of Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower" or Edwin Starr's "War," to name two.

Yet at the same time, while classic rock lives forever, memories or lessons of Vietnam have not.

Buffalo Springfield's "For What It's Worth" originally was a comment on the Sunset Strip Curfew (anti-war) riots, but now its meaning is open ended enough to suit any potentially violent protest.

Polyphonic's two-part series, "How the Vietnam War Shaped Classic Rock" for the first half and "How Classic Rock Shaped the Vietnam War" performs a needed reevaluation on dozens of rock and soul songs, placing them back in their historical context and showing how the power and message of music evolved as the war descended into chaos and defeat.

In celebration of the final season of Game of Thrones, Fender has teamed up with HBO to create the 'Game of Thrones' Sigil collection. Comprised of three masterbuilt, handcrafted guitars-the Game of Thrones House Stark Telecaster, the Games of Thrones House Lannister Jaguar and the Game of Thrones House Targaryen Stratocaster-each instrument in the Game of Thrones collection is built to order via the Fender Custom Shop. Handcrafted by Fender Principal Master Builder Ron Thorn, each guitar's design drew inspiration from the house's family sigil, costume designs, armor and weaponry, as well as each of their locations in Westeros.
IN THE BASSMENT

The '60s and '70s were full of pivotal moments in music that reflected the quickly changing culture. Bob Dylan, The Doors, and Miles Davis were among the top artists pushing their craft, and Harvey Brooks played for all of them. Harvey's playing transcended genres. Born in New York, Brooks began as a guitarist and made the switch to bass during an important time in history. We reached out to Brooks to get his top ten songs  from his career and a little bit about each of them.

In 2016, Brian Setzer visited Carter Vintage Guitars in Nashville and recorded this video. The L-5 was formerly owned by legendary Nashville musician Hank Garland. Garland performed with Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, Patsy Cline, Moon Mullican, Brenda Lee, Roy Orbison, Patti Page and many others. Beyond the great history of this instrument, it's a fine example of a 40's L-5. In 1948 the guitar had a DeArmond pickup installed by Gibson.

Here is a quick and easy guide to the conventional wisdom on pedal order. While there are good sonic reasons to follow these basic principles, many famous players have chosen to break the rules, and they've crafted some pretty compelling sounds. Feel free to experiment. If it sounds good to you-go for it!
ARTIST AWARENESS

Grantis is best known for performing in Prince's groups 3rdeyegirl and New Power Generation. Guitar Player placed her among "50 Sensational Female Guitarists" in its May 2017 issue. Now, the Canadian musician is stepping out to release her debut album, Diamonds & Dynamite, which was recorded over a mere two days in Minneapolis. The all-instrumental album is a diverse mix of atmospheric, in-the-moment playing that combines at times with Indian percussion. Grantis relied on her PRS CE22, and a stacked pedalboard featuring no fewer than 21 stompboxes. The album flows with blazing riffs and ambient guitar tones that make eloquent use of effects, including an EBow.
