Dig Into a Book with a Police Officer

11 - 11:30am OR 4:15 - 4:45pm
Meet, greet, and read with a Wilton Police Officer either in the morning from 11 - 11:30 am or in the afternoon from 4:15 - 4:45 pm. This is a wonderful event for children of all ages to meet and be read to by a police officer! Drop-in.

Drumming with Mr. K
Saturday, March 31
3 - 4pm
Get ready to feel the rhythm and join us at Wilton Library on Saturday, March 31st for a special, hands-on drumming program. Children ages 4-8 years old will learn a brief history of African Drums and the process of drum making from Mr. K, who has been making African drums and leading drum circles for many years. The little drummers will then have the opportunity to participate in a drum circle using drums, such as the Djembe and the Dundun. The children will even make their very own drums out of various recycled materials to take home!

Why Your Child Isn't Sleeping and What You Can Do About It

Please join us for a program on how to help your child fall asleep, stay asleep and wake up well rested.
Topics include:
- The 5 components of healthy sleep
- Why children wake up at night
- Night feeding- hunger or habit?
- Early rising
- Bedtime resistance
- Nightmares vs night terrors
- Underlying medical conditions that effect sleep
- Practical strategies to improve your child's sleep TODAY
Our presenter is Alison Bevan, who is the Pediatric Sleep Specialist at The Center For Advanced Pediatrics in Darien and Norwalk, CT where she works with children of all ages to improve sleep. She also works with families through her private practice - Sleepytime Coach. She is a Certified Gentle Sleep Coach, Happiest Baby Educator, and a member of The International Association of Child Sleep Consultants.

Books for Babies 10:15 - 10:45 am
Bring your wonderful baby to this infant friendly program at the Wilton Library! We will sing and play and enjoy gentle stories geared for babies under 12 months old. This is an excellent forum to meet other new parents in the area. Bring dad too! Caregivers must be present. Drop-in.
Wonderful Ones and Twos 11 - 11:30 am
This program is a sharing time for 1 and 2 year-olds and their caregivers. The emphasis is on books, with some songs and toy time. Drop-in.
Thursdays, April 5 - June 7
Mother Goose on the Loose 10:15 - 10:45 am OR 11 - 11:30 am
Ages 6mo. - 2 years with caregivers. Children will sing songs, listen to stories, move to music, and learn nursery rhymes. Felt boards, puppets, instruments, and props will be used. **Please note-in an effort to create a small, consistent group experience, this program uses a lottery system for registration. Lottery registration forms are available at the Children's Library desk starting March 19, 2018 and must be returned by April 2, 2018. Patrons will be notified via email if they receive a spot.
Wednesdays, March 7 - 28
Little STEM Studio 3 - 4 pm
Ages 3 - 5 with caregivers.
Children ages 3-5 are invited to join us weekly for a story and various STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) activities. Children and their caregivers will listen to a read aloud of a popular children's picture book and rotate through correlating STEM stations.

Movement and Dance 11 - 11:30 am

hildren ages 0-5 and their caregivers are invited to join a fun time of moving, grooving, jumping, shaking, singing and playing instruments. A great Friday morning work-out! Drop-in.

Mondays, April 2 - 30
Lego Club 4 - 4:45pm
Grades K and up. Sessions will be based on a new theme such as castles, vehicles, towers and more. Children will learn about the theme through stories and non-fiction books and then create a Lego masterpiece from the Library's Lego collection. There are 20 spots available for this program on a first come first serve basis. Twenty tickets will be passed out at the Children's Library Reference Desk starting at 3:45 the day of the program.

STEM Sports! 3:15 - 4 pm
Grades 3 - 5. Whether you swing a racket, kick a ball, or cheer from the sidelines, Wilton Library has the perfect program for you. Sports players and fans in grades 3-5 are invited to join us weekly for a Sports themed STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) activity. Each week we will feature a new challenge and a new sport....the only question is will you hit it out of the park or strike out? Supported by the Amadeo Family.

Write Your Own Haiku 4:15 - 5 pm

April is Poetry Month and the Wilton Library is celebrating it with a Haiku program for children. Kids will learn how to write their own Haiku poems. Deceptively simple and only 17 syllables, this form of Japanese poetry has become very popular with writers of all ages. Registration required.

Miss Meg recommends In Your Hands by Carole Boston Weatherford
"When you are a newborn, I hold your hand and study your face. I cradle you as you drift to sleep. But I know that I will not always hold your hand; then, I will hold you in my heart and hope that God holds you in His hands."
A new mother, a black woman, holds her newborn and imagines his future. The beautiful text, written almost as poetry, speaks of her love for him and her desire for him to find a life where he fulfills his own dreams. She will care for and teach him along the way as she promises to kiss his scrapes, tuck him at night and remind him of the Golden Rule. But above all else, she is keenly aware of the inherent dangers in the world and prays that God will protect and shelter him from danger and injustice. She knows all too well that young black men can be held to a different standard.
"I will pray that the world sees you as a child of God; and, as you cast a longer shadow, that you will be viewed as a vessel to be steered rather than a figure to be feared."
Brian Pinkney's exquisite watercolor drawings are both soothing and provocative. Ultimately, a book of hope, the mother adds to her prayer, "Black lives matter, your life matters" and reminds us that we have responsibilities for the lives of all children.
