CDO Workforce Youth Services Success Story

Charles enrolled in the Out-Of-School (OOS) Youth Program as an 18 year old with no High School Equivalency Diploma (GED) and a significant criminal history

Charles faced many socio-economic barriers to success, including a lack of transportation and living in a rural area with no public transportation available, as well as many instances where he was forced to rely on his own decision making and did not receive support from anyone close to him.

Charles never let his barriers and his past get in the way of his future success. Charles found a way to attend HSE classes and all the activities available to OOS Youth Program Participants

Charles completed a paid work experience and was provided with stellar employer references, that will be with him forever because of the great job that he did there

Charles attended and graduated from Leadership Development Training and "Bring Your A Game to Work" work ethic training

Charles obtained his High School Equivalency in August 2017 as well.

The final piece to Charles' success was to find employment. Charles did exactly that and began a job at a leading manufacturing company in February 2018.

Charles is a prime example of how motivation and determination (and assistance from the CDO Workforce OOS Youth Program) can lead to success, even with significant obstacles is the way.

Happy April!
Invest in Skills NY Campaign

Invest in Skills NY Campaign Launched
"Workforce Development is a critical issue
facing New York."
Get Involved

In response to Governor Cuomo's proposed $175 million investment in workforce development in this year's State of the State address, a statewide coalition of economic & workforce development and business leaders has launched the Invest in Skills NY Campaign supporting the Governor's budget proposal.

"It is vital that the Governor and New York State Legislature ensure that this funding is secured and used in the most effective ways to give New Yorkers skill training needed to fill in-demand jobs," the Invest In Skills coalition says.

New York employers are desperate for skilled workers - and yet thousands of New Yorkers remain unemployed or underemployed

As detailed in  New York Association of Training and Employment Professionals' (NYATEP)  State of the Workforce Report41 percent of New Yorkers have a high school diploma or less, and the young adult unemployment rate is more than double the state rate at 10.5 percent.

"New York should be a leader in workforce development," says Melinda Mack, Executive Director for NYATEP. "Each year the State puts nearly a billion dollars into economic development investments, leaving only inflexible, federal dollars to fund job training and skill development 175 million dollars is a great start and we hope it will serve as a catalyst to deeply connect job training, postsecondary skill development, and employment services in our State."

"Now is the time to have the collective voice of the business, workforce and economic development share why investing in skills can transform our labor markets statewide and increase opportunity for all New Yorkers," says the Invest in Skills coalition.

"This is an incredible opportunity to leverage momentum for this historic investment and to influence the implementation. However, without a long-term funding strategy or input from the front line of implementers this initiative will fail."

Visit www.investinskillsny.org to learn more about this coalition and the need to invest in workforce development and skills training as an economic priority in New York.
