2018 Harper's Choice Village Election Results
Current two-year terms of office for two Harper's Choice Village Board seats and the Columbia Council Representative seat expire on April 30, 2018. Two Board of Director nomination petitions were received from Jim Smith and Rebecca Beall and one Columbia Council Representative petition was received from Alan Klein. Per the Harper's Choice Community Association bylaws, if the number of nominations is less than or equal to the number of vacant director positions, the qualified nominees shall be deemed to be elected by the members and the Board of Directors will appoint the nominees to the director positions. The terms of office for the three nominees will be May 1, 2018 through April 30, 2020.

Patuxent Branch Trail

Join Harper's Choice Community Association for a breathtaking hike while experiencing some of Columbia's history.
We'll trek 4.6 miles on the Patuxent Branch Trail that leads you along the Patuxent River from Savage Park to Lake Elkhorn. Along the way are interpretive signs and the historic Guilford Pratt Truss Bridge that spans the Little Patuxent River along Old Guilford Road. The mostly paved pathway provides you with the perfect hiking or biking trail. Runners will also enjoy the variety of terrain that offers challenges for all ability levels. Wildlife is abundant, so bird watching is also a favorite pastime for users of this trail. Make sure to pack your lunch; midway through our hike we'll stop and have a leisurely meal before wrapping up the rest of the trail.

Columbia Archives
The Columbia Archives is excited to announce a program in honor of Women's History Month entitled Archiving the A.R.T.S - Celebrating the Legacy of the Women of Columbia. This program will honor the achievements of women of Columbia who have diligently worked in the fields of art, religion, theater and sports. It will feature archival materials maintained within Columbia Archives (through displays and presentations) that highlight the influence their work has had on Columbia.
In addition to the displaying of donated archival materials, the following confirmed honorees - Doris Ligon (Arts), Carolyn Kelemen (Arts/Theater), Barbara Mall (Religion/Theater), Carolyn Arena (Religion), Priscilla Hart (Religion) and Joan Lovelace (Sports) - will participate in a roundtable conversation focusing on how they have served Columbia and how Columbia has been a supportive environment for solidifying their visions.
The program will be held on Thursday, March 29 at 6pm at Slayton House, 10400 Cross Fox Lane in the Wilde Lake Village Center. Due to limited seating availability, please register at Eventbrite.

Columbia Cleanup Day Scheduled for Saturday, March 24 in All 10 Villages
Columbia can be even more beautiful, and the environment can be more healthy, after just three hours on Columbia Cleanup Day.
Columbia Cleanup Day will take place on Saturday, March 24 with volunteers simultaneously picking up trash that has accumulated at open space locations in all 10 villages. Nine of Columbia's villages are scheduled to work from 9am to noon, while the Kings Contrivance event will be held from 10am to 1pm.
This is the ninth year that Columbia Cleanup Day has been held since 2009. People who would like to participate can show up at the meeting locations. The meeting locations and clean-up areas are:
- Dorsey's Search: Meet at Dorsey Hall Pool (4649 Columbia Road). Clean the open space behind Dorsey Hall Pool and the playground area.
- Harper's Choice: Meet at Swansfield Neighborhood Center (5659 Cedar Lane). Clean the open space area behind Green Dory Lane, Woodenhawk Circle and Berrypick Lane.
- Hickory Ridge: Meet at Clary's Forest Pool (11615 Little Patuxent Parkway). Clean the open space in the middle of the Little Patuxent Parkway loop.
- Kings Contrivance: Meet at Amherst House (7251 Eden Brook Drive). Clean the open space and natural areas behind Amherst House and near Dickinson Pool. Please note that Kings Contrivance's cleanup will be held from 10am to 1pm.
- Long Reach: Meet at the cul-de-sac in the 6300 block of Tamar Drive. Clean the pathway and natural area from Tot Lot LR16 to Tot Lot LR15 (adjacent to Footed Ridge).
- Oakland Mills: Meet at Oakland Mills Village Center (5851 Robert Oliver Place). Clean along the pathway from Stevens Forest Road going toward Route 29.
- Owen Brown: Meet at the Lake Elkhorn parking lot on Dockside Lane lot off Cradlerock Way. Clean around Lake Elkhorn and the Forebay area.
- River Hill: Meet at Claret Hall in the River Hill Village Center (6020 Daybreak Circle). Clean the open space area between Columbia Gym and River Hill High School.
- Town Center: Meet at the Downtown Columbia Lakefront (10227 Wincopin Circle). Clean around Lake Kittamaqundi.
- Wilde Lake: Meet at Faulkner Ridge Neighborhood Center (15018 Marble Faun Court). Clean the open space around the neighborhood center.

Howard County 5th Annual Transition Symposium for Transitioning Youth with Disabilities
COLUMBIA, MARYLAND - The 5th Annual Howard County Transition Symposium will be held on Saturday, March 24, 2018 from 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. at Cedar Lane School, 11630 Scaggsville Rd, in Fulton, MD. This day-long conference offers parents, caregivers, professionals, and transitioning youth ages 14-24 with disabilities an opportunity to learn about a wide variety of transition-related topics.
The symposium will offer a plenary session featuring keynote speaker Michael Smull and several breakout workshops throughout the day led by experts in the areas of finance, education, law, disabilities, and healthcare. Sessions will be geared toward general, youth and professional audiences. New this year, the event will offer CEU's for social workers and a certificate of attendance for educators who attend.
The symposium will benefit novices to the transition process as well as those in need of guidance on particular issues. Planned general workshop topics include among others:
* IEP Planning for Transition
* Post-Secondary Programs
* Introduction to DORS and DDA Services
* ABLE Accounts
* Soft Skills for Workplace and Life
* Social Security Benefits
* Financial Planning for Special Needs Families
* Mental Health Services
A special transitioning youth workshop track will explore topics including health, dating and relationships, social security benefits, work/soft skills, cooking and leisure.
The event is sponsored by the Howard County Transition Outreach Partnership, a collaboration of Accessible Resources for Independence, The Arc of Howard County, Howard County Public School System, Howard County Government, The Arc of Howard County, NAMI of Howard County, Howard County Mental Health Authority, Howard County Recreation and Parks. It is made possible through a grant from the
Maryland Interagency Transition Council and the Howard County Public School System Family Support and Resource Center.
Invited guest speakers include: Lt. Governor Boyd K. Rutherford, Howard County Executive Allan H. Kittleman, and Howard County Public School Interim Superintendent Dr. Michael J. Martirano.
The cost to attend is $25 for registration prior to March 10 and $35 per person after. Admission is $10 for transitioning youth ages 14-24.

During the Tuesday, April 3, 2018, HCCA Board of Directors meeting beginning at 7:00 pm at Kahler Hall, a representative(s) from Howard County Executive Allan H. Kittleman's office will be present to answer and address any questions or concerns that the Board and community may have. As always, the Board meetings are open and we encourage residents to attend and participate in the meetings and this meeting is no exception. Regardless of your availability to attend, if you have any questions or concerns that you wish to convey to Executive Kittleman's staff, please email them to Village Manager Steve Ingley at

The Annual Searching For Spring Egg Hunt, co-sponsored by the Villages of Columbia, will be held on Saturday, April 14 from

Architectural Committee Meetings
Changes made to the exterior of homes in Harper's Choice require approval of the Village Architectural Committee (AC).
The AC will meet on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of the month at 7:30 PM to review applications.
The deadline to submit applications for approval is two weeks prior to the next meeting date.
