Message from Grady Moseley               Friday, April 26, 2019

Dear friends:

This week's sermon starts with a personal story of an experience from decades ago. The event changed the way I practice friendship with others, and with God.

Storytelling is personal. No one can deny you your story. Each person's story is unique. Stories remind us, and tell others, where we've been and where we may be headed. And in most stories, both in storytelling and story listening, there is something to be learned because most stories contain a true-ness. Sometimes this truth is just personal. Sometimes it's divine.

The Bible is mostly storytelling. It tells us how the universe and earth came to be from God's "relational" perspective. Its books recount how God made us good and how God has loved us well through the centuries. Its stories remind us of what God has attempted to teach us and how God accompanies us through the events that shape our lives. And the Bible's stories point to a reality for which we yearn: spiritual growth.

And while our spirituality cannot be measured in inches, ounces, degrees or decibels, spirituality is as real as the fragrance of a rose. Attempt to describe to someone the fragrance of a rose. Impossible. But describe a rose by telling a story about how the its fragrance fills your garden or your kitchen, or who gave you the rose and on what occasion and how it made you feel. The truth of your description cannot be denied.

Stories are much the same, particularly the spiritual ones. The stories we tell and the stories we hear can't be quantified with any measurement, except in how we are changed by a story's truth. Someone once said that the shortest distance between being human and truth is a story. On Sunday, some stories will be shared that exhibit spiritual truth about how we may experience God's dependable presence through friendship.
