Making Space
Dear Friends,
This Sunday we celebrate Pentecost! It is the day when we remember the gift of the Holy Spirit given to the church. The Holy Spirit is the presence of God with us, guiding, comforting, strengthening, convicting, and inspiring. A popular worship song by Kari Jobe titled “Holy Spirit” offers the lyric, “Holy Spirit you are welcome here…” What does it mean for us to provide a welcome space for the Spirit of God in our lives and in our families? When the Spirit of God finds open hearts and minds is she more able to guide, comfort, and inspire
Like any relationship, our relationship with the Holy Spirit grows with time, attention, and welcome. We can open our hearts and homes to the presence of God’s Spirit by being more intentional in our
posture
, in our
prayers
, and in our
planning
.
First, take time, with your whole family, to create space for God. One specific and concrete way is to sit in silence with palms open. Sometimes candlelight and soft music helps set a welcoming tone. Second, use your words to literally invite God’s Spirit among you. Even use the words of the song “Holy Spirit you are welcome here.” Or use your own words to welcome the presence of God in your midst.
Finally, plan time to spend with God as a group. Plan time to dream together, comfort one another, discuss hard topics and make tough decisions. Invite the Spirit of God to be a part of all these things so that together we may walk with God all the days of our lives.
To God be the Glory!
