Congratulations to the following primary investigators on receiving funding to support projects that reflect and embrace the Global One Health initiative's (GOHi) mission and vision:

Voices from the Field discussion series - April
|
Global One Health initiative (GOHi), which co-sponsors Voices from the Field with the Global Water Initiative and the Center for African Studies, is pleased to announce that three faculty experts will present their work in April.
All sessions are free, open to the public and held in 160 Enarson Classroom Building, 12 - 1 p.m. Regional cuisine will be served at each event.
April 4 - Professor Nicole Kraft (School of Communication) addresses One Health online teaching and learning
April 11 - Dr. Shu-Hua Wang (College of Medicine, Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Infectious Disease) presents Tuberculosis research in humans and cattle in Ethiopia
April 18 - Professor Sally Miller (Department of Plant Pathology, Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center, Wooster) speaks on Developing integrated strategies to manage diseases of vegetable crops in Tanzania, Kenya and Ethiopia

University of Gondar (Ethiopia) President Desalegne Mengesha presents world health day roundtable at Ohio State
|
On Thursday, April 5 from 2:30- 4 p.m., President Desalegne Mengesha from the University of Gondar (UoG) will be discussing global health issues and the ongoing partnerships between UoG and Ohio State.
Join us in 160 Enarson Classroom Building for refreshments and a dialogue on the critical value of international collaborations.
Celebrate World Health Day (April 7) and learn how Ohio State is engaging with partners around the globe to address today's complex and interrelated health issues.

Ohio State continues rabies mass vaccination training in Ethiopia
|
Since 2013, Ohio State has supported rabies prevention and elimination work in Ethiopia. Through building ongoing relationships with multiple partners in Ethiopian government and academic institutions, grass roots activities continue to make an impact.
The training was made possible by a donation in memory of Bob Gochnauer, DVM, a 1975 graduate of the Ohio State College of Veterinary Medicine. Gochnauer always put the people and animals in his community first - now that community is a little bigger. GOHi would like to thank Gochnauer and his family for the legacy of protecting and promoting health for our global community.

Additional personnel to join GOHi's Infectious Diseases Molecular Epidemiology Laboratory
|
 Dr. Mostafa Ghanem will join the Infectious Disease Molecular Epidemiology Laboratory (IDMEL) in Ohio State's College of Veterinary Medicine beginning in May. Dr. Ghanem has extensive experience in teaching and mentoring students. He will be supporting the Global One Health initiative (GOHi) with the National Institute of Health Fogarty International Training grant, specifically as the genotyping service coordinator for GOHi research training projects and engaging with global partners. He will also be GOHi's contact for projects involving whole genome sequencing and bioinformatics.

Tigabu appointed Ethiopian Public Health Institute division director
|
Dr. Eyasu Tigabu, who was co-mentored by Ohio State and Addis Ababa university professors, has been appointed as the director of bacterial, parasitic and zoonotic disease research of the Ethiopian Public Health Institute.
Dr.
Eyasu worked on genotyping S. aureus isolates during his time at Ohio State from November 2012 - February 2013. He has a research interest in antimicrobial resistance of clinical and food borne bacterial pathogens, and is currently leading the bacterial, parasitical and zoonotic research division of the Ethiopian Public Health Institute in Addis Ababa. The Global One Health initiative offers its congratulations to Dr. Eyasu on this wonderful opportunity.

Campylobacter Genomics and Enteric Dysfunction project update
|
A team from the Global One Health initiative (GOHi) and the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center participated in the University of Florida'sLivestock, Sanitation, Hygiene and Child Growth Symposium on March 1 - 2 in Gainesville, Florida. The focus was to identify different pathways and causes underlying child stunting. Wondwossen Gebreyes provided an overview of GOHi and relevant work in the area of molecular epidemiology of various enteric pathogens.

College of Nursing students in Addis Ababa
|
In mid-March, eight undergraduate and graduate Ohio state College of Nursing students visited several local hospitals and clinics including Zewditu, Alert and Black Lion Hospitals, and the Hamlin Fistula Center in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. At Zewditu and Alert Hospitals, students shadowed nurses and physicians as they cared for HIV/TB patients. In addition to shadowing, Ohio State nursing students shared their leadership project on topics including hypertension prevention, basic electrocardiogram procedures and interpretation, and cancer basics with Addis Ababa University midwifery and nursing students.
College of Nursing Ethiopia Education Abroad Course objectives:
- Prepare students for travel outside of the United States
- Learn the culture and history of Ethiopia
- Assess the health care needs of those living outside of the United States
- Differentiate between the U.S. health care system and Ethiopia's health care system
- Identify barriers and facilitators to knowledge sharing through direct interaction and experience with people of the host country (cultural communication, knowledge sharing)

World Tuberculosis Day and ongoing activities
|
World TB Day is celebrated annually on March 24. The theme of this year's event was
Wanted: Leaders for a TB-free world, which focuses on building commitment to end TB across all levels or government and civil society.
In Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Global One Health initiative's (GOHi) Regional Director Getnet Yimer, attended the 13th National TB Research Annual Conference at the Ethiopian Public Health Institute from March 21 - 23. Yimer, chair of the Ethiopia National TB Research Advisory Committee gave two presentations including a keynote address, chaired a session and was included on a panel discussion during the conference. High level stakeholders were in attendance including the State Minister and Deputy Mission Director of USAID.
In Columbus, Ohio, GOHi's technical Director of Community Health and Asia contact, Dr. Shu-Hua Wang, MD, the Medical Director of the Ben Franklin Tuberculosis Program, which reports and investigates all tuberculosis cases for Franklin County, Ohio. Currently, Dr. Wang is also the Ohio Department of Health State Medical TB Consultant as well as Medical TB Consultant for the CDC Regional Training and Medical Consultation Center. Dr. Wang attended the
Ohio Department of Health World TB Day event on March 20.

Data Manager for WHIP3TB project
Background: Estifanos has a BS in statistics and a minor in computer science and a MS in integrated health science. He has been working with the Global One Health initiative since May 1, 2017.
Interesting fact about living and working in Ethiopia: Even though Amharic is the working language of Ethiopia, Ethiopia has 84 Ethnic group who speak in different languages and 200 dialects.

World Health Day is a global health awareness day celebrated every year on April 7, under the sponsorship of the World Health Organization (WHO), as well as other related organizations. It is one of the eight official global health campaigns marked by the WHO, along with:

- World Immunization Week (last week of April)
- World Malaria Day (April 25)
- World No Tobacco Day (May 31)
- World Blood Donor Day (June 14)

71st Annual World Health Assembly held May 21-26 in Geneva, Switzerland
The World Health Assembly (WHA) is the decision-making body of the World Health Organization (WHO). It is attended by delegations from all WHO Member States and focuses on a specific health agenda prepared by the Executive Board. "Promoting health throughout the life-course" is this year's WHA theme.
The main functions of the Assembly are to determine the policies of the WHO, appoint the Director-General, supervise financial policies and review and approve the proposed program budget. The WHA is held annually in Geneva, Switzerland. Additional information on this year's event and side activities may be found

Centennial Travel Award in Basic Science Tropical Disease Research
A
STMH accepts applications from physicians and scientists for this international career opportunity focused on benefiting underserved populations in locations in the world where the burden of disease is high. The recipient receives $25,000 in support for a short-term research experience in the tropics. The application will be open June 6 - July 11. More information is available

Burroughs Wellcome Fund/ASTMH Postdoctoral Fellowship in Tropical Infectious Diseases
This fellowship is designed to stimulate or sustain interest in research in tropical infectious diseases. This unique fellowship provides funding for physician-scientists to conduct research focused on infectious diseases of low and low-middle income countries.
