Women of St. John's Bake Sale, February 2

For the past several years the Women of St. John's have been holding a bake sale on Super Bowl Sunday.
All money raised is used for church-wide projects; last year we raised $312.

We are asking for donations of homemade baked goods or snack items (such as the popular Chex mix). Some suggestions are muffins, cookies, whole pies and cakes, cupcakes, etc.

If you can help, please add your name to the sign-up sheet on the Narthex counter. Someone will call you a few days before to remind you.

We appreciate your assistance. Please call Diane Gustafson 619-253-7298 if you have questions.

Opportunities For Service

Pill Bottle Ministry

Did you know that in developing countries, the pill bottle and cap is often more expensive than the medication inside. You can donate your empty prescription bottles! Just drop off your empty prescription bottles in our collection bucket located in the foyer- no need to peel the information off.  Our volunteers will take care of that for you! We will wash them and ship them to Matthew 25: Ministries.  Matthew 25: Ministries accepts donations of empty plastic pill bottles for inclusion in shipments of medical supplies and for shredding and recycling. Our pill bottle program fulfills the dual needs of improving medical care in developing countries and caring for our environment.

Please note that we can currently only collect the clear orange prescription bottles.  We have found that the others do not benefit the program.
Thank you for your support!
Emergency Food Pantry:

Jesus said, "Feed my sheep." John 21:17
The South Bay Community Services "Emergency Food Pantry" needs donations every month. It's easy to donate! We will focus on a different food category each month. Pick up a flyer from the narthex, carry in your car until your next trip to the market, purchase the food, and place it on the table in Nale Hall before the end of the month.  During the month of January, our featured items will be dried or canned beans, or boxed potatoes.  Thank you for your support!

From the Prayer Journal of Fr. Jack Tolley

Friends. God wants a relationship with us even when our lives are falling apart. I have found  that to be so true in my own life. God loves and wants to help us at all times - even when we don't feel very good about ourselves.

Blessings, love, and hugs,
Fr. Jack.

Psalm 6: 6-7. I grow weary because of my groaning; every night I drench my bed and flood my couch with tears. My eyes are wasted with grief and worn away because of my enemies.

I love this passage from Psalms because it reminds us it's okay to have seasons when we're weary and wasted with grief. God loves us and wants us just as much when everything is a hot mess as when we have it all together. I had to learn this hard truth when I went through divorce. Years of codependency and dysfunction blew up, and my tidy life became untidy. It took years for me to surrender to God and accept God's love in the midst of my pain. God wants a deep, abiding relationship with us-especially when our lives seem to be falling apart. These times when we are at our weakest as humans teach us to lean more heavily on Christ and to grow stronger in our bonds to the Creator.

- This wonderful reflection was written by retired Navy Officer, James Neal, in the January 14, 2020 issue of Forward Day by Day. He is a member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Enid, Oklahoma.
They have two daughters and three dogs. James is a newspaper journalist.

Safeguarding God's People

May the Lord bless you and keep you.
May God's face shine upon you and be gracious unto you.
May God give you the grace never to sell yourself short;
Grace to risk something big for something good;
Grace to remember that the world is too dangerous for anything but truth
And too small for anything but love.
So, may God take your minds and think through them;
May God take your lips and speak through them;
May God take your hearts and set them on fire.
-William Sloane Coffin
