One of the most precious features of writing is that we can write to give a voice to others and help them understand feelings that they can't themselves. My piece this week is inspired by someone dear to me: love out of obligation.

"YannCe, your person and your actions will be forever engraved in our hearts. We will never forget you."

This past summer, the Maverick family lost one of its own. Yann Cedrick Kouamé (YannCe), 24, a student from the Ivory Coast died in a July boating accident in Florida. Remembered as a happy, caring young man, full of life and helpful, his friends fondly recalled the impact he had on their lives. Fellow student and close friend, Marc-Arthur Akoiblin, visited with those that knew Yann Cedrick and created this tribute video.

IS OUR IMAGE WORKING?
STUDENTS INVITED TO BRANDING AUDIT
Minnesota State Mankato is doing a brand audit and is looking for undergraduate students who are sophomores, juniors, or seniors that are willing to share their opinions on the University's current branding. This is an awesome opportunity for students to leave their mark on the University and have a say in the future of the Maverick brand. Participation is required in a two-hour focus group on October 6 or 7 from 4 to 6 p.m. Maverick "swag" will be given to participants.

GAMING RSO GROUPS
JOIN, GAME, AND COMPETE!
Minnesota State University, Mankato is home to 200+ Recognized Student Organizations that enrich campus. So far, there are four gaming RSO groups that you can join! They are: Maverick League of Legends Club, Maverick Gaming Community, Maverick CSGO Club (Counter Strike Go), and MavSmash. You can find all the information you need to join or start an organization on ENGAGE. Make the most of your Maverick experience!

'CULTURECHANGE'
STEPPING UP AND TAKING ACTION
CultureChange was founded in the summer of 2020 by four MNSU students. The mission of CultureChange as a nonprofit is to promote access to mental health resources through education, funding, and outreach. CultureChange plans to do this through initiatives at universities in addition to expanding the mandates for mental health to be taught in the K-12 setting. CultureChange is holding a virtual fundraising event from September 30-October 7.


'SPIRIT MONTH'
OCTOBER IS MONTH OF MAVERICK PRIDE
COVID may have put the kibosh on Homecoming 2020, but it can't keep down Maverick Spirit. As an alternative to Homecoming Week, October will be Spirit Month with homecoming themes blended with new activities for sporting Maverick Pride. Find out what's all in store. Go Mavericks!

EXPO OPENS CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
Pre-registration continues for virtual opportunities for landing a job or internship as the Career Development Center offers its annual Career and Internship Expo on Tuesday, Oct 13! Thousands of students have participated in this event that brings students and careers together. This year's virtual version is offered by the CDC through its Handshake website. The virtual recruiting event runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. ALL MAJORS are welcome. Contact the Career Development Center for more information.

FAFSA application for 2020-21 financial aid packages opens October 1. Due to economic impacts of COVID-19, many national news outlets are encouraging students to apply as early as possible. Read how the pandemic is expected to lead to increased need for financial support for college students.

NEW VARSITY TEAM, FACILITY, & EQUIPMENT
One of the fastest growing competitive sports will now officially be available at MSU along with a varsity team and a new facility. The University along with its sponsor have enabled and remodeled an area which will be designated for tournaments and training.

FREE FARMER'S MARKET
DRIVE ON THROUGH
On Thursday, October 1st from 4-6pm, Minnesota State Mankato is hosting a FREE farmer's market in Lot 20! The farmer's market will be set up as a drive through to ensure safety of faculty and students, but if you do not have a car available feel free to show up by foot.

We hope to see you there to get your fresh fruits and vegetables!

CAMPUS OFFERS FLU SHOTS
Getting a flu shot has always been an important part of staying health. Students who get sick with influenza risk being too sick to go to class (even virtual class). During this pandemic, getting a flu shot is even more important. Flu shots are now available at Student Health Services. Students can schedule an appointment to get theirs by calling 507-389-6276 or by going to the Patient Portal

Shots are free with most insurances.
