Wellesley Books Newsletter
March 28th, 2018

April is National Poetry Month, and we are celebrating!  We'll be hosting three different poetry events during the month (and even into May!), so you can experience live poetry readings and meet the poets.  We are also inviting all kids (18 years of age and under) to submit their own poetry for our very first Poetry Contest For Kids!  We will award prizes in the following categories: Elementary School, Middle School, and High School.  All submissions are due by Sunday, April 15th, and all entrants and their friends and families are invited to attend our poetry celebration on Independent Bookstore Day, April 28th, at 2:00 PM, when the winners will receive their prizes.  Click on the button below for more details.  Sharpen those quills and send us your best poems!

Our store will be closed on Easter Sunday, April 1st, so our employees
may spend the day with family and friends.  We would like to wish all
of our customers a Happy Passover and a Happy Easter!

Upcoming Events

All events are free to the public, unless otherwise noted.

Tuesday, April 3rd, 7:00 PM.
Middle school is not a movie.  A budding filmmaker with executive function disorder figures out how to become the director of her own life in Lights, Camera, Disaster, a very funny, engaging middle-grade book from Erin Dionne. Join the author as she reads from and signs her hilarious novel, and ask her about her favorite action movies and superheroes!

Wednesday, April 4th, 7:00 PM.
Kick off National Poetry Month with three exciting poets as they read selections from their newest publications.  Heather Bryant, Catherine Stearns, and Lynne Viti will be presenting, and they promise to share their love for poetry and sign copies of their books.

Thursday, April 5th, 7:00 PM.
Meg Wolitzer wowed us with her best-selling novel The Interestings, and now she unveils her epic new book The Female Persuasion at a must-attend event.  Greer Kadetsky is a shy college freshman when she meets the woman who will change her life, a dazzlingly persuasive and elegant pillar of the women's movement.  Charming and wise, Meg Wolitzer delivers a novel about power and influence, ego and loyalty, womanhood and ambition.  This event will be moderated by local author Nichole Bernier.  Please note that this is a ticketed event. Tickets are $5 and can be used as a coupon off the price of the book.

Friday, April 6th, 7:00 PM at Wilson Middle School, Natick.
Cecile Richards -- president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America for more than a decade and featured speaker at the Women's March on Washington -- presents her memoir, Make Trouble, in conversation with Boston City Councilor Michelle Wu. Richards shines a light on the people and lessons that have gotten her through good times and bad, and encourages readers to take risks, make mistakes, and make trouble along the way.  Please note that this is a ticketed event. Your $32 ticket includes a copy of the book.

Saturday, April 7th, 10:30 AM.
Join four terrific picture book authors -- Gaia Cornwall, Alison Goldberg, Jannie Ho, and Gina Perry -- for a combined author reading, signing, and story time.  There will also be art projects and other fun activities for kids, so join the fun!

Saturday, April 7th, 7:00 PM.
Emily X.R Pan's first novel, The Astonishing Color Of After, is being compared to the YA work of John Green and Lauren Oliver, but trust us, this is so good that adult fans of Celeste Ng and Isabel Allende will also love it.  Presented in conversation with fellow author Julie Dao ( Forest Of A Thousand Lanterns), Pan will discuss her novel and its autobiographical beginnings, and will sign copies afterward.  Don't miss this evening of magical realism and fascinating cultural significance. (Click here for a great Indies Introduce Q&A with Emily!)

Wednesday, April 11th, 7:00 PM.
Every day, Boston Globe advice columnist Meredith Goldstein takes on the relationship problems of thousands of dedicated readers.   In her column, she has it all figured out, but in her real life she is a lot less certain.  Meredith will be in conversation with author Joani Geltman about her new book, Can't Help Myself, the extraordinary (and often hilarious) story of a single woman navigating her mercurial love life as well as a moving portrait of a community of  love-seeking allies.

Wednesday, April 25th, 7:00 PM.
Continuing our National Poetry Month events, we bring together two great New England writers -- Robin MacArthur (Half Wild) and Dan Chiasson (Bicentennial).  Join them for an evening of readings and poetry appreciation.

Friday, April 27th, 7:00 PM.
We adored Madeline Miller's great take on the Trojan War, Song Of Achilles, and we are delighted to bring her to our store to introduce her new novel, Circe.  With unforgettably vivid characters, mesmerizing language, and page-turning suspense, this is a triumph of storytelling, an intoxicating epic of family rivalry, palace intrigue, love and loss, as well as a celebration of indomitable female strength in a man's world.  William, Jane, and Gillian already love this new book!  Please note that this is a ticketed event. Your $5 ticket can be used as a coupon off the price of Circe.

Monday, May 7th, 7:00 PM.
Our National Poetry Month series ends with Sarah Snyder, author of the poetry collections The Human Contract and Notes from a Nomad.  Selected to be part of the Bread Loaf Writers' Conference, Sarah has been a mother and an English teacher for several years, both of which have influenced her writing.  Join us for an evening of beautiful poetry.

Bookseller Recommendations

William Recommends:
The Astonishing Color Of After by Emily X.R. Pan
This debut is listed as Young Adult, but almost anyone can admire the beautiful writing and emotional pull of this magical realist novel.  On the day Leigh gets her first kiss, she also discovers her mother's body after her suicide.  When she begins spotting a mysterious red bird, she is certain it is her mother attempting to get Leigh to understand her past so that her spirit can move on to the next world.  If you like John Green, Celeste Ng, or Isabel Allende, you will love this fantastic novel.

Sally Recommends:
Tangerine by Christine Mangan
Alice and Lucy were roommates at Bennington College. Their relationship, intense and mysterious, changed after a tragic accident. Now they are reunited in Tangier, where Alice has moved with her husband. Shades of The Talented Mr. Ripley are evident in this very good psychological thriller with the heat and beauty of Morocco in the background.

Gillian Recommends:
Stray City by Chelsey Johnson
Andrea leaves Nebraska and her small-minded family when she moves to edgy 1990's Portland, Oregon, where she finds a queer community which finally gives her a sense of belonging.  Life gets more complicated when she discovers that even that group has its limits, particularly when Andrea finds herself drawn to a straight white male drummer.  Affectionately set against the backdrop of a free-spirited but gentrifying city, this is a charming story of figuring out home, love, and what it means to be a family.

Peter Recommends:
Sunburn by Laura Lippman
Why would a woman on vacation with her husband and young daughter decide to walk away and take up a new life as a waitress in a small-town dive bar?  What happens when she falls for the man who's been sent to track her down? Laura Lippman returns with her most compelling story yet, featuring a slow dance between two of her most unforgettable characters. Savor it now, or take it with you on your own vacation. This is a great beach read in more ways than one.

Rebecca Recommends:
Baby Monkey, Private Eye
by Brian Selznick and David Serlin
Man, is this book weird -- my kind of weird.  Beautiful illustrations pair with loopy text about a literal baby monkey-turned-detective whose only shortcoming as a private eye is his inability to get dressed properly.  (Let's face it, putting on your pants is kind of the worst.)
Great for beginning readers who want a big-kid book.

Lauren Recommends:
Hamilton And Peggy! by L.M. Elliott
L.M. Elliott has once again taken a fascinating woman from the sidelines of history, and brought her front and center.  Peggy Schuyler was so much more than simply "...and Peggy".  She was whip smart, charming, fearless, fiercely loyal, and socialized with the great leaders of her day.  Well researched and full of fun cameos and Hamilton references, this is not to be missed!

We met Ray, a four year old chihuahua mix when he visited the Used Book Cellar recently and we admired his cool jacket.  He enjoys taking long walks, as long as it is not snowing.  He does not enjoy the snow!  He also prides himself on his squirrel-chasing abilities.
