What is wrong with my male Boston?
*Graphic pictures* - Educational
Cyrus is the seventh Boston to come into MABTR's rehoming program with this look.
Question to be answered before addressing the issue: Is the dog a Hermaphrodite (a dog with both male and female parts; some can also be present as a male with incomplete production) OR Hypospadias (male showing failure of fusion of the urethra, prepuce, and scrotum resulting in a nonfunctional and exposed penis with a nonfused prepuce).
6 out of 7 cases came from a puppy mill and non-reputable breeders.
We have had four Hermaphrodite and three Hypospadias cases to date. All have been adopted out, living happy and healthy lives.
Meet Cryus, who was picked up as a stray in January 2018, our only case not from a breeder. At first the founder told us he may have an injury to his penis but once he arrived it was obvious what the issue was. Born as what we would assume is a male due to physical features; however his penis is not functional. The urine exits normally from a hole that is also not stationed like a normal female's urethra.
Cyrus had bloodwork to confirm which case we were dealing with. The bloodwork would confirm if he had female sex hormones. If yes female sex hormones exist he is a Hermaphrodite and would need to be neutered and spayed. If no female sex hormones he will only be neutered. 
We confirmed Cyrus was had Hypospadias so he underwent reconstructive surgery that in the end he physically looks like a female. He was only neutered. Surgery is normally successful in these cases and we have yet to have any issues.
In all our cases the bowels and anus was not impacted; however in some cases the pee hole is just below the anus resulting in ongoing bladder infections if the area is not kept cleaned.
There was actually a TV series, Medical Extremes, that did a take on the topic and guess what? it was a Boston.
Though the correction of the penis was done differently than how we approach our cases, it was addressed and it is important that you work with a vet that is comfortable with the case, but the preferred is one experienced with cases such as this.

For those that have attended in the past we hope you found the event to be as enjoyable and beneficial that we will see you again this year.
Frenchie's story - Estimated to be 10 years old Frenchie was picked up as a stray in Cedar Rapids, IA. She arrived with glaucoma in both eyes, blind, deaf, chronic ears infections, mammory gland tumor, intacted, and
severe periodontal disease (bacteria of the mouth). As a result of her health concerns the shelter contacted MABTR. We requested that bloodwork be completed to ensure that Frenchie was healthy enough to be transported and undergo anesthesia. Her bloodwork came back good & her heart sounded good as well. She underwent a total of three surgeries. One at the shelter for her spay and mammary gland tumor (they did not have time for her teeth). MABTR priorty was to address her infected mouth and unfortunately made the decision to remove her eyes due to the increase in size and that they had no function any longer.
The second one with MABTR's vet in Omaha, NE to remove all but four teeth, remove one eye and a polyp from her ear, which was a surprise. Her third surgery consisted of her second eye being removed and her ears being flushed and cleaned. Her total medical bill was $ 1779. We will not collect an adoption fee for Frenchie as she entered our hospice program as a result of her disabilities and fragile state. She requires no ongoing treatment other than monitoring for future ear infections. It is obvious that Frenchie was somone's companion but unfortunately her medical needs were not addressed. She is a love bug, a fighter and a joy to have around. She currently resides with Pam and her family in Iowa City, IA.
Tessa's story - At the age of 17 weeks MABTR was called upon by an owner who had a puppy, Tessa, with a broken front leg. The owner couldn't afford to have it treated. The owner's female dog fell on Tessa while playing causing the break. MABTR was called 10 days after the incident but we are grateful we were contacted. We arranged transportation to move Tessa to Omaha, NE where she would be cared for by our orthopedic vet. She underwent surgery the day after she arrived. A pin was placed in her elbow. She spent a week at the vet to ensure she was recovering nicely as we had a 50% chance of the surgery not being successful due to the time between the incident and surgery. Her total medical care cost was $943 whereas her adoption fee was $400.
Every year our medical expense exceeds our adoption fees so we do fundraisers like For the Love of Bostons Dinner & Silent Auction to help make up the difference.
 Nemo's story - At the age of one Nemo was dropped off at a shelter in Des Moines, IA as a result of accidents in the house. The shelter diagnosed a heart murmur, skull deformity (eyes very wide set), corneal ulcers,
and possible neurological disorder. As a result of the health concerns he was released to MABTR. He was transported to Omaha, NE to be seen by our eye doctor for further evaluation. He had a severe case of conjunctivitis that was not responding to medication due to folliculars formed on his globe. As a result of his buggy eyes he had old ulcers and his eyelids wouldn't close all the way. To protect his globes he underwent
canthoplasty surgery to offer additional protection of the ocular globe. Nemo's total medical expense was $755 whereas his adoption fee was $275. Every year our medical expense exceeds our adoption fees so we do fundraisers like For the Love of Bostons Dinner & Silent Auction to help make up the difference.

If Feeding Your Dog Only Once a Day
Ask yourself the question; could I go a whole day with
just one meal or two meals with nothing in between?
I guarantee your answer is NO, so why expect your dog to.
If you are trying to get your dog to loose weight OR gain weight, one meal a day is NOT the solution.
One thing to note about bostons is they have a high metabolism rate and as you
 experience now they are an active breed so they are burning calories. You may need to adjust the amount of food you are feeding from what is stated on the back of the food bag based on your dog's activity level. Manufactures are giving a general estimate. This does not take in all factors.
Spread out your dog's daily food amount over a few meals. Like with us, it can be more satisfying to a dog to have smaller, more frequent meals. Your dog is less likely to scarf down their food too fast if they are not approaching their meal on an empty stomach. If your schedule permits three small meals a day instead of two regular size meals it will be more satisfying to your dog as they will feel content throughout the dog.
Keep in mind that vegetables and fruits are also good for your dog and can be used between meals to keep them content. This is better than a dog treat/biscuit. Fruits consist of pears, bananas, strawberries, apples without the peal. Vegetables to consider are green beans, carrots, lettuce, cucumber, yams, pumpkin, and zucchini.
There is also a list of fruits and vegetables your dog needs to stay away from as they are harmful to their health. Foods like onions, avocado, grapes, pits of peaches and plums.

It is also important to not exercise for at least an hour (longer if possible) before and especially after eating, especially large breed dogs, due to stomach bloat and twisting of the gut.
In addition should your boston be passing gas
you need to consider changing the diet. 75% of gas is due to the wrong diet and the other 25% is how your dog eats.
Bostons have a sensitive stomach already so add in the wrong diet you have family and visitors wearing gas masks. It does not need to be so. Keep in mind that even the most expensive food may not be the right food for your Boston.
Start a new diet now. MABTR strongly recommends the following brands. Note that there are many good brands out there but just because they are good do not mean they are the right one for your dog.
Try: Purina Pro Plan Lamb and Rice (Focus: non-shredded), Purina Pro Plan Sensitive Stomach and Skin (Focus: non-shredded), Natural Balance, Nature's Receipt, Taste of the Wild, or Royal Canine.
*Canned food and table scraps are NOT recommended. Vegetables however are.

Adoptable Dog of the Month - Dale
My name is Dale. I am a 10 year old Boston Mix and weigh 19 pounds. I need a new home because I was picked up as a stray. I am being fostered in Wichita, KS.
I am Boston from the ears to the end of my torso. I have a thick, soft brindle coat. My face is not a smooshie face but a handsome face nonetheless! My tail is long, thin, white tipped and wags whenever I see you, you touch me or talk to me! I am a happy boy who loves my human and wants to follow you and be near you. I also get along great with my foster brother and sister dogs and the cat.
I have an inguinal hernia in the scrotum area with no organs involved. It does not seem to bother me and the vet thinks it's been there all my life. He doesn't want to remove it as he feels it could cause more problems to remove it than to leave it be since it isn't causing me any discomfort. I am scheduled for a neuter and dental next week. I do have some cloudiness in my eyes from normal aging. Other than that, the vet said I am in very good shape for my age with no joint issues, etc.
I am an active boy and love to roam around the back yard and go on walks. I need to go on regular walks to keep my weight under 20 pounds so it doesn't cause pressure on my hernia. Luckily I love healthy snacks like peas and carrots.

I was in my mid-twenties, living alon
e in Denver
, CO in 2010 and decided that it was time to get a dog, a Boston Terrier. I filled out the online app and shortly I was matched with a
Miss Buttons
. I was scared, excited, and nervous. What if this dog didn't like me, what if I didn't like her? MABTR reassured me that everything would be fine.
I received Miss Buttons on
June 1st
. I was so excited. Once I brought her home she wouldn't have anything to do with me. I bugged and begged her for attention but she would just stay curled in the corner staring at me. This went on for the first 8 days, I had convinced myself she did not like me and that this just wasn't going to work, as she wasn't happy.
One day I had come home from work, I was on the phone with a friend explaining my frustrations and how it was making me sad. After I got off of the phone I sat down on the couch, and for the first time, I had seen Buttons move from her little corner she was staying in. She timidly walked over to where I was sitting on the couch, she sorta nudged my leg and made a snort. I looked down at her and locked eyes, at that point she jumped up on the couch and just plopped down on my lap. From this point on we have been completely inseparable, she has been by my side since that day.
She has turned out to be the best companion filled with love that anyone could ask for, and she has impacted my life in so many ways one can't even begin to explain. I used to volunteer in the production of city events such as Peoples Fair, Taste of Colorado, and Cherry Creek Arts Fest. These were long days and I would feel bad for leaving Miss Buttons home, so she would ride around the festivals in a golf cart with me. She became a very popular little girl. She would go hiking and camping with me in the Rockies. She would travel with me back to my family in Illinois. She has been on every vacation with me, we have been all over. She is not a dog, she is a child.
About 3 years after I had her, I had gotten into a relationship with a cat person who was not fond of dogs, but that lasted about a month before Miss Buttons stole that heart too! We then moved our little family from Denver to New York City. Two Humans, Three Cats, and one Miss Buttons halfway across the country!
I could not imagine my life without this girl, I owe all of this to the amazing people at MABTR who did an absolutely amazing job with picking my perfect companion. I am sad now that I do not live in an area where I can still use MABTR's amazing services for my next Boston when that time comes.

AGE is
just a number
I wish applicants would make personality and behavior priority when adopting a dog but the truth is that a majority are not even interested in learning about a dog if it is out of their age range.
Remember that just because a dog is young does not guarantee he/she will live to be 14. MABTR cannot promise anyone how long a dog will live. We unfortunately have experienced the loss of a life at a very young age unexpectedly.
MABTR is not prejudiced when it comes to rescuing. A life is precious no matter

Why you aren't seeing our Facebook Posts
Have you noticed that you aren't seeing our Facebook posts very often? Well it's not just you! Due to changes in the way Facebook works, less and less of our posts are showing up on your timelines. If fact, less than 5% of you see our posts daily! And sadly, this means you are missing a lot of our amazing rescue stories and videos!
The good news is Facebook has created a way around this using new settings.
Read the instructions below, go to our Facebook page and update your settings on your desktop or mobile device so you won't miss a thing!

- Make sure you have clicked the "LIKE" button on our page.
- Click the "Follow" button.
