Diary of a Middle School Kid

Jordan, a 7th grader at Hadley Jr. High, dreams of world traveling, especially to Paris and London. Having visited Hawaii already, she's ready to cross the other ocean!

Being musical comes naturally to Jordan. She has played the piano and currently dabbles with the bass guitar. She doesn't mind belting out a song, either, and is ready to learn "Boulevard of Broken Dreams."

Her reading leans toward fantasy like the Percy Jackson series, especially The Lost Hero by Rick Riordan, which has a dragon and much more!

Jordan can't get enough of starfruit, but please keep ranch dressing and mayonnaise away.

New Book Spotlight

The Last Gargoyle by Paul Durham
Penhallow is the last of his kind. The stone gargoyle--he'd prefer you call him a grotesque--fearlessly protects his Boston building from spirits who haunt the night. But even he is outmatched when his ward Hetty nearly falls victim to the Boneless King, the ruler of the underworld.

Then there's Viola, the mysterious girl who keeps turning up at the most unlikely times. In a world where nightmares come to life, Viola could be just the ally Penhallow needs. But can he trust her when every shadow hides another secret? Can he afford not to?  Check out The Last Gargoyle.

Mid-Lit: Peer Book Reviews

The Running Dream by Wendelin Van Draanen
My name is Katherine. I go to Hadley Jr. High and I reviewed The Running Dream by Wendelin Van Draanen .

I like this book because running is something I like to do, just like the main character in the book. Throughout this book, many events happened and some even made me cry. In the book, a fabulous runner named Jessica wins many races until something happens to her, and then her whole life changes. She can't do anything like she did before.

The Running Dream is about trying and when times get tough or struggles get harder, then you push through. Check out The Running Dream.
MEET YOUR NEW LIBRARIAN!

Hello there, I'm Tom Malinowski, the new Middle School Librarian! Not to fear, Christina is still here as the new Youth Technology Librarian, and we're all super glad she hasn't left us.

So, who am I? I was born in Chicago but lived in the western suburbs most of my life: Glendale Heights, Bloomingdale, and Bartlett. I currently live on the north side of Chicago in Lincoln Square.

Having returned to the Midwest after working in the Boise Public Library for over three years, I was eager to get back to performing. As an educator/performer for Barrel of Monkeys, I've taught creative writing and acting to Chicago Public Grade School students for over 15 years, which contributes to my librarian skills.

I enjoy fantasy and science fiction in literature, movies, and TV.

One of the many fun challenges I look forward to as the new Middle School Librarian is creating engaging programs filled with critical thinking and fun!
