Each year, more than $171,000 in scholarships are awarded to 54 of the best and brightest high school seniors in Palm Beach and Martin counties through  the Palm Beach Post's Pathfinders recognition program.  The program is one of the largest and most comprehensive high school scholarship programs in the state.

Pathfinder nominees are chosen by their schools in the fall of each year. Nominees submit their applications in January, with interviews taking place in March. The process culminates in May with an awards ceremony at the  Raymond F. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts.

This year, 37 students enrolled in District-operated schools were recognized, with 13  of those students earning first-place awards in their respective categories.  Read more...

Superintendent Fennoy: Your Penny is Hard at Work in the School District of Palm Beach County

Sun Sentinel -
I t's been more than a year since the community approved the penny sales tax referendum that is shared between

The first revenues couldn't come fast enough for many of our district facilities that were long-suffering as a result of $1 billion in deferred maintenance expenses. Our facilities team has already completed 17 much-needed projects, including new roofs for  Lantana Middle School and  Carver Middle School, new chillers for  Lighthouse Elementary School and  Panther Run Elementary School and multiple paving, lighting and waterproofing projects.

An additional 14 projects are currently in progress, including new roofs for  West Riviera Elementary School and  K. E. Cunningham/Canal Point Elementary School, and new chillers for  Palm Beach Lakes Community High SchoolBear Lakes Middle SchoolBelvedere Elementary School and  Grassy Waters Elementary School.

Twelve projects will begin this summer and a total of $300 million in projects are out for bid at this time. The District intends to keep its promise to complete the capital improvements of our schools on time and on budget, and an aggressive timeline is essential to staying ahead of rising construction costs.

More importantly, the penny sales tax boosts district spending on safety and security to $40 million to create single point of entries for all schools and enhance school campus hardening measures. Additional funding from the state Legislature will also help cover the cost of one law enforcement officer on each campus next year, significantly boosting the visibility of a law enforcement presence on campuses. Lesson in Perseverance: From Refugee to Mentor
His is a familiar story - that of an immigrant who comes to this country, filled with great hope. But what sets  Forest Hill Community High School  Choice Specialist Moise Derosier apart from others is his quiet determination.

In 1992, at age 17, Moise left his native Haiti, boarding an overcrowded boat aimed at South Florida. He spoke almost no English and was enrolled in ESOL classes at Forest Hill. He studied- determined to learn all he could - and was accept ed into the school's engineering academy.

"Through that engineering academy, I had the opportunity for an internship at the public defender's office. Helping lawyers learn Word Perfect [was a] big confidence booster for me," he shares.

Moise developed his IT skills and a flair for mathematics thanks to his Geometry teacher, who became his mentor and friend.

"He helped so many kids, so he was my model of what a great teacher is...[just] trying to be like him," Moise says.

After working as educator for several years and earning a master's degree at  Harvard University, it is now Moise who is the mentor. His biggest joy is working alongside three of his former students who are now teachers. Watch the video...
