the beginning of love."

A Quality Assurance meeting will be held on February 21st at 2:00 pm in the activity room. We meet to identify licensing violations and internal incidents such as falls, medication errors and safety issues as well as staff training. Additionally, any other area identified as needing improvement, and any items brought up by residents or responsible parties. All are invited to attend.
|
|
We here at the Episcopal Home try to be proactive on safety issues brought forth by responsible parties and/or residents. Some issues are
a matter of individual choice/desire and some issues are directly dealing with safety and health related items. Nonetheless, we try to do what we can to resolve the issue on a daily basis. These matters are usually dealt with on a one to one basis, while the Quality Assurance meeting will be a group discussion.
|
|
A Resident Rights meeting will be held on February 14th at 11:00 am in the EH activity room. We will watch a DVD and discuss resident rights. Refreshments will be served, and, again, we are all invited.

My thoughts for February are centering on time and use of time. I have noticed as I grow older, and with others growing older around me, how we use our time differently than in the past. We all have the same 24 hours, and we go by the same calendar; however, it is clear that how we use time now is prioritized differently than in the past.
One resident reads from morning until night, stopping to attend to little other than personal needs. Another resident spends hours working on jigsaw puzzles. Another one enjoys using colored pencils and working on complex coloring pages. Two others may be engaged in a game of chess. Residents are quite selective in the scheduled activities in which they are willing to participate. Recently, a resident who I had encouraged to attend a scheduled activity, said to me, "This had better be good!". She was not being difficult, but she is selective in what she likes to do and how she spends her time.
The way we structure our time is helpful to our mental process. Routine is important. A predictable routine reduces stress and anxiety because we know what to expect as well as what time we have to devote to enjoyable pastimes. Routine activitities will become part of our body memory. A structured day is helpful to orientation and to beneficial to the overall health process. Meals at a set time can go hand-in-hand with regular medication administration. If we have a basic routine, our bodies, minds, and spirits have a better chance of being balanced.
|
|
In closing:
- May you have good memories of those who cannot be with you.
- May you appreciate yourself, what you do for others, and what others do for you.
- May we treat each other with kind words and thoughts and always be fair.
Kind wishes,
Mary Grace

It's February and the month of Valentine's Day. I think the biggest Valentine we have all received is God's love for us. And because we are so deeply loved, we try to find ways to share that abundant, extravagant love with others. In the church, we talk about our time, talent and treasure.
The Board thanks all of you for your love of the ministry of The Episcopal Home. There is so much love.... Love from the residents for each other and for all of the staff and volunteers. The staff exude love to the residents and support each other. There is the love from the many volunteers who give to the Home. There is the love for and from the parish of St. Andrew's. There is the love shown by the many donations given to the Home.

These verses from Song of Solomon, Chapter 8:6-7 speak of the unbreakable power of love.
Set me as a seal upon your heart,
as a seal upon your arm;
for love is strong as death,
passion fierce as the grave.
Its flashes are flashes of fire,
a raging flame.
Many waters cannot quench love,
neither can floods drown it.
If one offered for love
all the wealth of one’s house,
it would be utterly scorned.

Thank you for all of the deep love embodied in this ministry known as The Episcopal Home.

Baking Club
Baking Club continues to be a popular activity for residents. Usually, they make desserts to be served at supper time, so everyone benefits from their efforts.

One of our residents, Juanita
(first photo, center)
, is an expert at making jewelry. Coincidentally, our new student intern, Amber, also makes jewelry. Together, they are working with residents to teach them the basics of jewelry making. So far, they have made bracelets, with plans for moving on to necklaces for the next session.

The Episcopal Home is a place where residents receive friendship, spiritual nurture, rest, recreation and excellent physical care in a peaceful setting which allows them to live in a place of safety, warmth and love. The Home is able to care for those with limited financial means because parishes of the Episcopal Diocese of Central Pennsylvania support the facility. Through the ministry of the Episcopal Home, the Church is engaged in God's mission to value life and care for others.
