Sewer Spill on Mayhew Inn Road

April 2, 2018

Folks,
This afternoon we received a Public Notice regarding a sewer spill on Mayhew Inn Road this past Saturday.  A call to the County Administrator's office confirmed that the spill did not reach the lake.  The Public Notice is shown below...

Mayhew Inn Road Sanitary Sewer Overflow

NOTICE OF SANITARY SEWER OVERFLOW
Due to a mechanical failure associated with an air release valve on Mayhew Inn Road, Garrett County Department of Public Utilities (DPW-U) experienced a sanitary sewer overflow (SSO) of approximately 4,500 gallons on Saturday, March 31, 2018.  At no time was service to DPW-U customers interrupted.
At approximately 10:50 a.m. on Saturday, the Garrett County Department of Public Works - Utilities Division - Maintenance Division experienced an SSO in the area of 2405 Mayhew Inn Rd.  The SSO occurred due to a mechanical failure with an air release valve on the sewer main located along Mayhew Inn Rd.
Workers moved quickly to minimize the impact of the SSO which flowed into a wooded area along Mayhew Inn Road, and, at approximately 12:15 p.m., the DPW-U tanker arrived on site to contain the leak.  At approximately 1:00 p.m., DPW-U personnel isolated the malfunctioning air release valve and stopped the leak.
Based on the approximate rate of the spill, the estimated overflow volume was determined to be 4,500 gallons.
At approximately 1:30 p.m. on March 31, 2018, DPW-U personnel contacted the Garrett County Health Department (GCHD).  Water quality sampling of the impacted area commenced at approximately 2:30 p.m.
Out of an abundance of caution, DPW-U personnel applied hydrated lime to the affected ground, and warning signs were posted at the site of the SSO and along the affected lakeshore.

  Cheers,

Bob Hoffmann
President
