MEDIA ADVISORY

Coloradans Against Auto Theft Presents "Kilo Car" at Denver Auto Show April 4-8

Kilo Car Twitter Contest Gives Participants Chance to Win $200 Visa Gift Card

STATEWIDE (April 4, 2018) - The latest high-tech hot rods won't be the only cars turning heads at the Denver Auto Show this week. Attendees will also drive away with a safety message: what happens when their cars get stolen?

To demonstrate how auto theft is a tool to commit additional crimes, Coloradans Against Auto Theft (CAAT) will bring their Kilo Car to the Denver Auto Show April 4-8. Ninety-seven percent of adults charged with auto theft are charged with additional crimes, such as armed robbery, identify theft, home invasion and drug crimes.

The Kilo Car is a full-sized vehicle frame constructed of materials that look to be different types of drugs, representing the shocking truth that auto theft is a gateway crime and a safety concern for the whole community. The Kilo Car made its initial debut in downtown Denver last month, when it was displayed in the parking lot adjacent to the Colorado Convention Center March 1-6.

CAAT will host a Twitter hashtag contest for the duration of the Denver Auto Show, encouraging show attendees to take a photo of or with the Kilo Car and tweet it using the hashtags #KiloCar and #Contest. On April 9, CAAT will choose one entrant at random to receive a $200 Visa gift card.

What: CAAT will exhibit the Kilo Car at the Denver Auto Show to demonstrate how auto theft is a tool to commit additional crimes and a safety concern for the whole community. Show attendees are encouraged to take a photo of or with the Kilo Car and tweet it using the hashtags #KiloCar and #Contest for a chance to win a $200 Visa gift card.

When: Wednesday, April 4 - Sunday, April 8, 2018. View exhibit hours here.

Where:
Denver Auto Show
Colorado Convention Center
Booth Space 78

Why: Colorado has one of the highest auto theft rates in the nation, with an average of 53 cars stolen every day. CAAT created the Kilo Car to educate Coloradans about the importance of simply locking their car to deter auto thieves.

Interview Opportunities: To request a media interview, please contact Krista Silano on behalf of CAAT at 303-832-2700 ext. 211 or   [email protected] .

CAAT is a statewide auto theft prevention initiative to raise awareness about the problem and educate the public on what they can do to reduce their chances of falling victim to auto theft. CAAT is a coalition of law enforcement agencies, the Colorado State Patrol, the Colorado Auto Theft Investigators (CATI), insurance partners, LoJack and AAA Colorado. CAAT and the state auto theft task force efforts are funded in part by the Colorado Auto Theft Prevention Authority (CATPA).

CATPA is a state authority that was established by Colorado statute in 2003 to help reduce Colorado's serious auto theft problem through the award of grant funds. The Colorado law helps ensure that auto theft prevention efforts are targeted. These efforts have resulted in an increase in stolen vehicle recoveries and criminal prosecutions of hardcore and major organized criminal groups, as well as related crimes.
