The East County Advanced Water Purification Program is a new source of drinking water that is
high quality, cost-
effective, locally controlled and environmentally responsible.
|
The program will reduce East County's reliance on imported water.
|
Padre Dam and Helix water districts are nearly 100% dependent on imported water for drinking water, leaving the area vulnerable to drought and other factors.
In addition, East County relies on the City of San Diego's Metro Treatment Plant to treat and discharge its wastewater into the ocean. Instead, the Advanced Water
Purification
Program
will recycle water locally and purify it using state-of-the-art technology to create a sustainable source of drinking water so pure and clean that it is near-distilled quality.
By
providing East County with
local control and independence of both its water and wastewater, the program
provides a long term solution for increased stability in our communities and
safeguards the vitality of East County's economy and quality of life.
The program is currently in the demonstration phase. If it moves forward, 20 to 25 percent of East County's drinking water demands would be met by this program.
