First Look: Check out our new elementary school designs
The Folsom Cordova Unified School District has released renderings of the first elementary school planned for Folsom Ranch, the upcoming development slated for construction south of Highway 50.

The new school is designed as a two-story single building that will accommodate 668 students in kindergarten through fifth grade.
 
Planned to open as early as 2020 based on population needs, Washburn said the entire site is designed for more efficient use, improved supervision and better security due to fewer exterior doors and a single point of entry.
 
"Quality schools are a hallmark for which our community is known," said JoAnne Reinking, Folsom Cordova Unified School District Board of Education President. "The schools at Folsom Ranch are no exception and will maintain the District's excellent educational standards."

Home-schooled charter students plant seeds with Intel  
Home-schooled students from our K-8 charter school in Mather got a visit from Intel  employees, who brought garden seeds on May 10 and helped plant them with the students.
 
Our Superintendent, Dr. Sarah Koligian, was also on hand to help plant and have fun. This garden not only produces, vegetables, fruit and flowers, it serves as an outdoor classroom to conduct lessons in biology, chemistry, art, and teamwork.
 
The day was a fantastic example of how students benefit when teachers, parents and community leaders all work together as partners in education.
 
Thank you Intel! E veryone had fun planting in the outdoor classroom. 
VIDEO: Students shine at first district wide talent show
What amazing talent! Folsom Cordova's student leaders serving on the Student Advisory Board (SAB) did an amazing job hosting their first annual Districtwide Talent Show!
 
Student performers from all of FCUSD's middle and high schools - dancers, musicians, stand-ups and more - wowed a crowd of their peers, families, and staff at Cordova High School's Performing Arts Theatre on April 30.

Gold Ridge student playwrights win B Street Theatre contest
Congratulations to Gold Ridge Elementary students, fifth grader Craig Soriano and fourth grader Rebecca Lin for winning the B Street Theatre's script writing contest for students in our region! 

Soriano's play "The Travel-O-Matic," and Lin's play " The Three Monks," were performed by the B Street Theatre tour group at Gold Ridge Elementary on Friday April 29. Teacher, Lorraine Fowler ran a playwright club at Gold Ridge and 30 students submitted scripts to the B Street Theatre's Fantasy Festival Contest. 

An award ceremony for all winning student playwrights was held on May 19 at the Sofia Tsakopolous Center in downtown Sacramento. 
Theodore Judah student earns 2nd place in poster contest
Theodore Judah Elementary second grader Aiden Chiam won second place in the Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito & Vector Control District's annual Fight the Bite poster contest in grades K-3. 

Chiam's artwork was chosen out of nearly 1,500 entries we received this year. For winning 2nd place Chaim received $100 check for himself, and his school got $200.

IN THE NEWS: FHS Folsom Zoo engineering projects featured
CBS Sacramento did a live report on Folsom High's Principles of Engineering class, which completed engineering projects at the Folsom Zoo Sanctuary for the third year in a row. 
 
The zoo provides the students a venue to create authentic engineering projects that benefit the zoo. This year the students made items for the public to use, as well as items for the animals and their habitats. 
 
Some of the larger projects were three beds for the bears and a shade to fit over the reptile exhibit, to allow the public to see the animals without all the sun glare.
Career pathway students get top honors at state design contest
Thirteen students from FCUSD competed at the 51st annual SkillsUSA Leadership and Skills Conference in April. 
 
In the  Engineering Technology/Design competition, First Place/Gold Medal went to the Folsom High team, Alba Joy, Anna Hagiwara, and Dhruv Sangamwar for their project, a prototype recycling station.  These students qualified to compete at the 54th Annual National Leadership and Skills Conference in Louisville, KY on June 25-29, 2018. 
 
Third Place/Bronze Medal was awarded to Folsom High team Jack Li, Aiden Szeto and Bart Wysoczynski, for their retractable table design. Folsom High student Wayson Lee earned a Second Place/Silver Medal in  Related Technical Math . Additionally, two teams of students from Vista del Lago High competed in 3-D Visualization and Animation .

SkillsUSA is one of the six Career and Technical Student Organizations that support our FCUSD Career Technical Education (CTE) programs , which provide educational pathways for hands-on, skills-based learning.   
CSEA &FCUSD Joint Negotiations Update: May 2018
Bargaining team members from FCUSD and the California School Employees Association (CSEA) Chapter #528 (Comprehensive and Transportation Units), which represents about 1,000 employees: bus drivers, food service workers, maintenance staff and other non-teaching positions, met for a regularly scheduled bargaining session on May 10, 2018.
 
During the collaborative gathering, teams discussed a variety of items including a District counter proposal on contract articles and topics of mutual consent; the BOOST elementary summer program; new positions in the bargaining unit in 2018-19; a pilot partnership to provide slip-resistant shoes to custodians; and more.

My First Library Card Project outreach to schools 
 
This school year Folsom Public Library
implemented the My First Library Card Project  to foster library access for all students in Folsom.
 
Library employees have visited several Kindergarten classes, at 10 of our  elementary schools in Folsom to talk about the library, and staff delivered specially designed library cards to all kindergartners.
 
Best selling author and Illustrator David A. Carter, known for his pop up books, donated his time and talent to create the artwork for the cards. 
 
To date the library has delivered nearly 700 cards and about 200 Folsom Cordova students came to the library to activate their card they were given. 
 
Friends of Folsom Library provided the funds for the project to ensure and ensured that children who return to the library to activate their card with their parent or guardian also receive a free book to great.
