A TASTE OF TORAH
"Be the change you wish to see in the world”

Our Torah portion this week is called “Lech Lecha”…when God famously tells Abraham: “Go from your land, from your birthplace, and from your father’s house, to the land which I will show you”. Scholars and Rabbis have long questioned why the text includes all three places Abraham must leave: his land, his birthplace, and his father’s house. Couldn’t God have just told Abraham “Leave where you are and trust that I will lead you to the destination”?

I think these three places represent different levels of discomfort Abraham had to endure in order to truly leave where he was mentally, emotionally, and physically. In order to change his state of being, it would not have been enough for God to simplify Abraham’s journey. It also must have taken an extreme amount of faith and courage to trust in God’s vague message. Abraham had to leave the familiarity of his land, the nostalgia of his birthplace, and the comfort of his father’s house to grow as a human being.

There is no change without discomfort…no progress without growth. The words Lech Lecha literally translate to: “Go to yourself”. Where are we and where do we wish to be? What impedes us from reaching these places and what guiding forces help us along the way? We are all in a constant state of evolving, learning, and loving.

May we challenge ourselves to grow in, potentially, uncomfortable situations as we carry memories of comfort and nostalgia along with us on our journey.
