(BICKNELL, Amos Jackson.)  SPECIMEN BOOK OF ONE HUN DRE D ARCHITECTURAL DESIGNS.

New York: Bicknell, 1879. 8vo. Publisher's green cloth. Frontispiece, 80 pages, First edition. [Hitchcock, 172].

An unusual pattern book, the most uncommon of all of Bicknell's publications, in that the sample houses, each shown here with elevation and floor plan, mostly come from other Bicknell pattern books.  The specimens include plans for suburban houses, villas, sea-side and camp-ground cottages, homesteads, churches and public buildings.  Where someone built a home from the pattern, the owner's name and location are listed.  They include homes from Tenafly and Elizabeth, New Jersey, Nyack and Matteawan, New York.  There are also several plates of mantles and furniture and elaborate Queen Anne and Arts and Crafts and Aesthetic Movement interiors.  With twelve pages of building and furniture related advertisements and index in back.  While all editions of Bicknell have the same number of pages, each edition made significant changes in the houses illustrated making each edition important.  Very good.

(WINDOW AWNINGS-TRADE CATALOGUE)  HIJOS DE FRANCISCO SANS.  Trade Brochure of Window Awnings.

Barcelona: G. Seix & Barral, (circa 1920s). Tall 8vo. Colorful folding brochure in eight panels (closed 6 1/2 x 3 3/4 inches; open 6 1/2 x 29 inches).

Ra re trade brochure not recorded on OCLC.  A vividly colored brochure in concertina format rendered in resplendent pochoir as especially associated with the period.  The products offered are striped window awnings, which were ubiquitous in summertime virtually everywhere and in Mediterranean climates year-round -- the latter, still found in the region, to this day.  The colors rendered jump off the page and make what might seem entirely utilitarian quite exciting.  In addition, this promotion includes five brightly colored inset "lifestyle" illustrations - golfers by a clubhouse decked in awning; a dock with a sailboat and a lovely house with purple awning in the background, etc.  Then a larger illustration of a seaside panorama underlies several of these insets with text.  This is not just a trade catalogue, but also a fine specimen of period printing and style.  Very good.
