A Georgia's Mountain Treasures Stroll
Little Cedar Mountain & Canada Creek
Sunday, June 3, 2018

Canada Creek crossing - photo by Sue Harmon
Hike Leaders: Sue Harmon and Jan Stansell

Hike Location:
Little Cedar Mountain (AKA Buzzard Roost) in Suches, GA

Hike Date: Sunday, June 3rd, 2018

Outing Description: Our Suches ForestWatch friends will share the rich history of the area, and of course, we will be checking out all the plants and trees in this beautiful place.

We will ramble up on an old road bed for about one hour before reaching Little Cedar Mountain, where we will take in the undisturbed view. Not a single rooftop in the view shed! Then we will meander another hour and a half, back down the mountain on a trail towards Canada Creek, where we'll have a stable, flat-edged log (10-12 inches wide) for crossing. You need to have enough balance to walk this log without poles, as the log is a bit too high above the water to use them. Next we'll begin a slow climb on an uneven and sometimes steep and rocky trail along Canada Creek to a stunning waterfall and a nearby rock outcrop, where we will break for lunch. There should be some interesting plants along this segment as well.

Our last leg will begin with a short, but seriously steep and tricky climb for about 20 yards up from the waterfall and then a 40-minute, slow and steady bushwhack back towards Hwy 60 in Suches, where we will arrive about 1:30 pm. We will have a short road walk back to the school. Note that the school parking is about equal distance between the dump where we start the walk and Two Wheels of Suches where we end. Both are about 1/3 of a mile along the road shoulder.

Meeting Time, Place and Directions: Meet at 9:30 am at Woody Gap School.  Click for a Google map We will cozy up into a few cars and shuttle our group to the nearby trail head at the Suches dump, where parking is limited.

Distance and Difficulty: This is a mostly moderate hike of about 4.5 miles total and will be at a leisurely pace, but there are some strenuous stretches and one stream crossing, as described above.

Duration:  9:30 am to 2:00 pm

Participant Limit: 15
