Ready for the Future, the Class of '18 Says Goodbye to RSDM

RSDM grads received their lilac hoods at Monday's convocation ceremony, symbolizing their entry into the dental profession.  Lilac is the official color of dentistry, and the hoods, draped over the students' graduation gowns, were lined with scarlet, Rutgers' signature color.  The students' grit and skill were praised by Dean Cecile A. Feldman and others. A total of 146 students received DMD degrees and postgraduate certificates in a range of specialities.    LEARN MORE

For 20 years, RSDM Event Has Raised Awareness of Oral Cancer

A student examines a patient for signs of oral cancer.
Since 1998, RSDM's health fair has screened thousands of patients for signs of oral cancer and raised awareness of the disease. Organizers of the event, held earlier this month, celebrated its 20th anniversary by examining nearly 250 residents of Integrity House, which offers treatment for substance abuse.  For many who come to the free screening, it's their only recent visit with oral healthcare provider, who can alert them to decay and other dental problems.  LEARN MORE

Feldman explores alternatives to painkillers like vicodin and percocet and calls for dentists to step up in the fight against opioid addiction.   LEARN MORE

RSDM Wins Charity Hockey Game Against NJMS
The RSDM Bitewings (in red) faced off against the NJMS Medwings (in black).

We are the champions! The Bitewings, RSDM's hockey team, beat New Jersey Medical School's Medwings 5-1 last month -- and helped raise nearly $10,000 for cancer patients. The annual charity  match has been held for six years. The med school is usually victorious. But RSDM may have started a winning streak. The teams are still accepting donations to the  Cancer Institute of New Jersey (CINJ) Patient Relief Fund. Give here.

Third-year Student Wins Fauchard Award
Dr. Carmine LoMonaco presents the Fauchard Award to Anush Shah.

Anush Shah is the winner of this year's Pierre Fauchard Academy scholarship award, which goes to third-year student leaders who display "integrity, imagination, initiative and communication skills." Shah credits his dad -- a flavor chemist who worked for PepsiCo, creating the taste of soft drinks -- with fostering a love of science. At RSDM, he has pursued his dream of combining science with clinical skills to help others, he says.

Kudos For Two RSDM Leaders

Congratulations to Michelle Robinson, Class of '94, on her appointment as Interim Dean of the University of Alabama School of Dentistry.

We'd also like to commend faculty George Schmidt, Class of '98, who was recently named president of  Omicron Kappa Upsilon (OKU)  the National Dental Honor Society. In addition to his new title, he is vice president of the New Jersey Academy of General Dentistry  (NJAGD) and holds various positions on the academy's national committees and subcommittees.
