SBIR Road Tour - June 21 and June 22

Join us on June 21 and 22nd for an expansive SBIR/STTR conference in Durham and RTP, NC.
The pre-event proposal training session, delivered by the NC SBTDC, will be held on June 21st. This session aims to help attendees understand the content of a Phase 1 proposal and the importance of the commercial potential of the technology being funded. Awardees, proposal reviewers and ecosystem partners will be present to share valuable information on their experiences. Also covered will be how to make the best use of your pre-scheduled one-on-one sessions with Federal agency program managers at the Road Tour during the following day.
June 22nd will offer registrants the opportunity to learn about each of the 11 participating federal agencies and meet with them one-on-one. These one-on-one sessions will be scheduled on a first come-first serve basis. The earlier you register, the more likely you will be scheduled for meeting with agency program managers.
"We look forward to getting everyone up to speed on the SBIR program, the proposal process and the SBTDC's no-cost consultative services to small businesses in North Carolina" says John Ujvari, SBIR Program Specialist with the SBTDC. He adds, "Since the SBTDC became North Carolina's resource for SBIR counseling and training 20 years ago, the small tech companies in the state have been awarded close to $1B in SBIR funding."

The Technology Commercialization team kicked off its Graduate Summer Internship program in early May. Over 20 technology-based businesses, many of which are SBIR/STTR awardees, who are in the process of developing and executing on commercialization strategies are participating. This competitive program links both business and engineering graduate students with these companies to assist with a variety of business development projects including, but not limited to, customer analysis, primary and secondary market research and financial modeling. Since the program started in 2001, the SBTDC Graduate Summer Internship program has provided over 60,000 hours of service to over 300 companies.

"Investor Ready Entrepreneur" a Success
|

On April 27th, the SBTDC's Technology Commercialization team delivered a strong performance at the
"Becoming an Investor-Ready Entrepreneur" (IRE) workshop
in RTP. Held at the NC Biotechnology Center, the workshop
proved to be a big hit with over 55 participants, including over 30 business owners, graduate summer interns, economic development partners, and SBTDC staff. Associate Dean of the Wake Forest University School of Business, and former SBTDC member, Tim Janke, returned to present along with SBTDC Technology Commercialization Counselor Mike Carnes. The investor panel included long-time supporters Kip Johnson from Morningstar Law Group, Rich Kramarik and Bill Warner from IMAF-RTP, and new panelist Jacob Traverse, a life science consultant with venture capital experience. Tethis Inc. founder and CEO Scott Bolin, delivered an inspiring key note speech recalling his company's journey as they have raised over $20M in equity financing to date.
IRE is designed to educate and prepare growth-oriented entrepreneurs to successfully engage private equity investors. This full day program was developed by experienced entrepreneurs, angel investors, angel networks/fund executives and venture capitalists, and provides an "insider's look" into the world of equity funding. By viewing investors as "customers of equity", entrepreneurs can reduce barriers to funding, navigate the process more easily, and increase the chances of successfully obtaining funding.
