InZane SUPer Grom - at Olukai Ho'olaule'a
Every grom that participates in my InZane SUPer Grom clinics around the world is a champ in my eyes. They learn water skills, safety, share aloha and respect for the land and the ocean. Every now and then, one of the groms gets a real fire in the belly to compete.

8-year-old Bobo Galleghar is such a kid. With the support of his family and mentors like me he trains hard and practices the Maliko every weekend. His goal was to compete in the 2018 Olukai Ho'o. That event will go down in the books as the gnarliest Maliko event, with waves of 18-20 feet.

When I was talking to Bobo and his father after the race briefing I could see he was nervous but still was determined to go. I was focused on the foil race so I decided to accompany Bobo on this event, to keep him safe and enjoy watching him compete. We were all stoked at how much fun he had - and came in 3rd in the 17 and under class (at age 8!)

Soaring past the $1 million mark in funds raised at Standup for the Cure events, we had over 1,000 participants in the recent SFTC event in Newport, CA on May 5th.

You can read the full story on my blog and catch a great article by SUP the Mag.

You can still plan to participate in an event coming soon in a region near you. ( SFTC schedule for 2018 here)
Supporting NC Coastal Federation at Carolina Cup 2018
I am stoked to watch how awareness for active participation and support of environmental groups for our ocean and coastal regions is growing. At the Quiksilver Carolina Cup, the North Carolina Coastal Federation was the non-profit selected to receive funding. I was happy to connect with their development director, Catherine Snead, to organize a book signing and "meet & greet" at their booth.

For every copy of my book BENEATH THE SURFACE that was sold, $5 went to the NC Coastal Federation. I always enjoy talking with readers and water athletes. It was a great event all the way. I also had the chance to fill my days with lots of clinics for SUP and foil for everyone from groms to elite athletes.

Anyone who knows me knows that I am very passionate about being both an Aloha Ambassador and an ECO Ambassador. The impact of plastics on the ocean and its marine life is devastating and we all have a role in turning that tide.

I was honored to have been part of the recent Westin Waterman program at the Westin Maui Resort & Spa, in Ka'anapali. The team at the Westin recognizes an opportunity to connect visitors and locals alike to ways we all can reduce the negative impact of plastics. In late April we did a beach cleanup.

ARE YOU A SUPer GROM?
I travel almost 10 months a year and my time at home on Maui is precious. One of my favorite things to do when I am on Maui is to host an InZane SUPer Grom clinic at Launiupoko Beach Park. We have fun, learn to be safe, always clean up the beach, and always avoid single use plastic.

I have the honor of meeting many SUPer Groms. This month we are featuring Bobo Gallagher who braved extreme conditions and daunting 18-20 ft waves to complete (and came in 3rd in 17 and under). Bobo is an example of being wise (doing the event with a mentor) and training hard . I f you want to nominate yourself or someone else, just use my CONTACT form
Mahalo to my Dad, Matt Schweitzer, for capturing this shot of Bobo in action
