Highlight of the Month - Deep Learning Advances in Health Care
On March 25th - 27th, Dr. Tucker travelled to Silicon Valley to attend NVIDIA's GPU Technology Conference.  Health care topics included deep learning applications in medical imaging, precision medicine, and population health care. 

For example, researchers are training deep learning algorithms to detect medical anomalies in breast cancer image scans (figure on the left). These advancements have potential to enhance the efficiency and early detection capabilities of health systems.
CHOT at Penn State was thrilled to announce the arrival of the NVIDIA DGX-1 Supercomputer on January 28, 2017. This system can be used for rapid training of deep learning models for health care applications such as image segmentation and patient-centered health care recommendations. Please contact CHOT for collaborative opportunities using the DGX-1 and other CHOT resources.
Prototype iOS App Seeks to Advance Patient-Centered Care
Raj Desai (senior majoring in computer science) and James Frazier (senior majoring in computer engineering) have collaborated on a prototype iOS application . The application's purpose is to allow users to collect different types of data from the different sensors on a smart phone. For example, the app can record the phone's accelerometer, gyroscope, and magnetometer data, and upload the data immediately to the cloud for subsequent data mining and visualization.
For example, the security-minded app first requests access a specific sensor (e.g., the camera). Once permission is granted by the user, the app can identify objects in the room using machine learning . The most recent addition to the application is  OpenPose , an algorithm developed by researchers from Carnegie Mellon University.
 Using the OpenPose model and CoreML, Apple's library for machine learning on iOS devices, the phone's camera can trace the outline of the skeleton of a person (figure on the left).

Along with the visualization of patients' skeleton data", the future vision of the prototype app is for patients to be able to directly connect with their healthcare providers using any browser-enabled device. An example prototype of this functionality can be seen by zooming into the patient-centered view on Penn State's CHOT website as seen in the figure on the right.


REU Students Present Their Research at 
Bi-Weekly Meeting
During the bi-weekly meeting, CHOT Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) students  Lindsay Mitchell  (top picture) and and  Fariha Azhar  (bottom picture) presented their work to the CHOT research team. Their research are 1) Endoscopic Ultrasound-Fine Needle Aspiration and 2) Characterization of Ablation Zone in Radio-frequency Ablation.
Upcoming Event
The 2018 Spring IAB Meeting will take place on April 12th and 13th in Houston, hosted by Texas A&M University. Topics proposed by CHOT university sites include Population Health, Care Coordination, Access to Care, Analytics and Innovative Technologies, and Patient Experience.
