2018 GDYF Golf Tournament Held Today in Bishop

Seventy-six golfers took advantage of a beautiful day for golf today at the 8th Annual Georgia Dairy Youth Foundation Golf Tournament in Bishop.  Many thanks to our sponsors and golfers who supported the
event.

General tournament sponsors were: Georgia Milk Producers, Inc., Dr. Larry and Rachel Guthrie, Gail Wiley, Coweta County 4-H Dairy Heifer Show Team, Christopher and Pamela Brinton, Ag Central Cooperative, and Carl Blount Insurance Agency.

After registering and receiving goody bags with donations from The Dairy  Alliance, golfers ate lunch sponsored by Chick-fil-a on Epps Bridge.
During the tournament, golfers also enjoyed ice cream and milk provided by Mountain Fresh Creamery.

The 2018 Tournament was held in memory of H. B. "Bud" Wiley, Jr. (1944-2012) who was an avid dairy farmer and pivotal in organizing the first two golf tournaments for GDYF. Thank you to the GDYF Golf Committee, Peggy Gates, Kellay Watson and Farrah Newberry for their work in planning and executing this successful GDYF event.
GDYF Junior Board members attended to thank sponsors and help with the event!

State Legislative Update
From GA Agribusiness Council

AG Input Sales Tax
Much needed changes to the GATE program are included in ( HB 886 ) by  Rep. Sam Watson (Moultrie).  We appreciate all of his work with ag interests, coupled with the support of  Senate Ag Chairman  John Wilkinson (Toccoa) , to strengthen the integrity of the program with the creation of a  three-year card  that carries a $150 registration fee, adds additional sales tax education initiatives for eligible purchases, implements an enhanced application process, and increased penalties for violators. We are very pleased with the updates and increased integrity this bill brings to GATE for the future. It now awaits the signature of Governor Deal.

AG Water Metering Finale
The heavily debated water metering legislation,  SB 451 , will soon be signed by Governor Deal. GAC and Georgia FarmBureau were waist-deep in this one as soon as it was introduced. The transfer of the state ag metering responsibilities from GSWCC to Georgia EPD was inevitable, but the rest of the bill had room for improvement and we are pleased that the right balance was struck to protect permit holders and strengthen the metering program. More changes will come in the future, but we landed in a good place.

Ag friends should express thanks to outstanding work of these key lawmakers: Rep. Tom McCall, Rep. Sam Watson, Rep. Buddy Harden, Sen. John Wilkinson, Sen. Tyler Harper, and Sen. Dean Burke. They put in long hours on this one.

Here are the three key provisions:
  1. Formally moves the ag metering program from the GA Soil & Water Conservation Commission to the Georgia Environmental Protection Division.

2. Irrigation permits in the Flint Basin will no longer have a $250 fee and shall be automatically renewed after the 25-year term.

3. Georgia EPD will contract the reading of all irrigation meters. It also requires them to contract out irrigation metering installation, maintenance, and repairs.

In March, Congress passed and President Trump signed the $1.3 trillion omnibus spending bill, formally called the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2018. What you might not have realized is that there are a number of provisions included within that bill that will significantly impact the dairy industry.   Read more

In January, the Food and Drug Administration issued its 2018 Strategic Policy Roadmap entitled  Healthy Innovation, Safer Families, which notably contained the following paragraph:
Modernizing certain standards of identity [SOI] to address current barriers to the development of healthier products while making sure consumers have accurate information about the foods they eat. Among other steps, FDA intends to issue a request for information to identify and help prioritize which potential standards of identity should be modernized based on their public health value.
The modernization is important because the  FDA's Labeling Policy Book was last published in August 2005 and while there have been updates, agricultural processes today have created new foods and beverages, many of which have become so popular with consumers that there is confusion, in particular over the use of the words "mayonnaise" and "milk."
The FDA's Code of Federal Regulations Title 21 includes hundreds of foods and beverages that fall under specific regulations on how they are made and labeled - everything from yogurt (regular, low-fat and nonfat) to canned fruits and vegetables (by variety) to canned tuna to eggs (frozen, dried, liquid and more) to meats and cheeses (by variety) to pizza and even bottled water  - covering most of what is sold in the supermarket.

Add Cow Manure to Your List of Renewable Energy Sources

The average Holstein cow produces over 100 pounds of manure a day. It's a lot of poop. It's also a lot of potential power.

On some farms, that energy is already being collected: The manure's tossed into an anaerobic digester system where gas concentrates and then has to be stripped of water, carbon dioxide and other elements before being mixed with traditional natural gas and used for heat.

David Simakov, assistant professor of chemical engineering at the University of Waterloo in Ontario, is working to make that process more efficient.   Read more
