2019-20 Academic Calendar
District administration has worked with the Professional Development Council to create three academic calendar options for the 2019-20 school year. Please review the three options shown in the Google form below and provide feedback. A recommendation will be made to the Emporia Public Schools Board of Education later this spring.

Community Relations
If you did not receive a call from School Messenger or an email from Constant Contact during our weather-related school closings, please contact the Community Relations office at 341-2200 or community.relations@usd253.net. You may also want to unblock the number 620-341-2471 as that is the number assigned to School Messenger calls.

Payroll
Your new 2018 W-4 and K-4 forms are available. Please return them to the Payroll Department by March 30, 2018.

Summer Paychecks
April 1st is the deadline for employees to notify the Business Office if they want lump-sum payments for summer checks. Forms have been sent to all employees new to the district this year. Other employees who want to change their election must notify Karen Yeager or Erica Markley at 341-2228 or 341-2428. Lump-sum payments will be made June 30.

Moments

Capturing Kids Hearts, Village Elementary
Village Elementary was named a Capturing Kids Hearts National Showcase School. Out of 10,000 schools in the country and 180 nominees to be a Showcase School, Village was chosen as one of a handful to receive the recognition. The main focus of Capturing Kids Hearts is to develop healthy relationships between all members of a school's education community and to teach skills that help students develop self-managing classrooms techniques and decrease discipline issues through ideas such as social contracts.

Pennies for Patients Campaign
Logan Avenue students, staff, parents and community partners raised $3,990.29 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society during the Pennies for Patients Campaign. The drive exceeded their goal and the students were rewarded by being able to compete in relay races to make human sundaes out of their teachers.

Recognition
Thank you to Dr. Ji Hoy and the organization  E mporia Celebrates the Flint Hills for the donation of approximately  $1,000 to pay for transportation for our 4th grade classes to attend a field trip to the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve.

Grants
Dr. George Abel updated the board  on several grants that may be available to the district for use during the 2018-19 school year. Several of the grants are continuations of current district programs involving kindergarten readiness, other grants would allow the district to continue efforts to serve the needs of our students. Grant notifications should be awarded by mid-June.

Board Goal Setting
The board heard from Dr. Doug Moeckel, Deputy Director of KASB. He shared information regarding vision, goal setting and long range planning services offered by KASB.

Turning Point Academy
The Turning Point Advisory Council presented updates on its progress regarding future opportunities and the direction for TPA. The program currently serves students in kindergarten through 8th grade. There are multiple connections with TPA and Commissioner Watson's Kansans Can vision and Kansas school redesign. The council will continue to meet to determine interest and the need for future direction from the board.

Other Board Business
  • The board approved administrative contracts.
  • There was a motion to terminate the superintendent's contract as of June 30, 2018. The vote failed. The contract for the superintendent will continue through June 2019.
