The National Inuit Research Strategy: Five Things You Need to Know. This past Thursday, Natan Obed, the president of Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami, stood inside one of Canada's natural science shrines, the Canadian Museum of Nature, to declare that Inuit want a direct say over research done in their homelands. "There has been an imagination that there has been a blank space in Inuit Nunangat that is filled by people who are explorers, who are saviours, people who come in and explain the world to us, or explain our world to the rest of society in a way that we could never do ourselves," Obed said.

 Russia Starts Development of 100 Million Euros North Pole Research Platform. As vanishing Arctic ice makes it increasinly difficult to uphold research activitities in the highest Arctic, Russia moves ahead with plans to build a research platform for the region. The projected self-propelled platform will have top-level ice protection and be able to move autonomously around in Arctic waters for up to three years, Minister of Natural Resources Sergey Donskoy
told RIA Novosti.

Russia Proposes Arctic Countries Jointly Use New Satellite Communications System. The Russian Federation submitted a proposal that the Arctic states use the infrastructure of the prospective Express-RV satellite project together, the Russian Satellite Communications Company press service reported. "During the second meeting of senior officials of the Arctic Council, the Russian Satellite Communications Company, on behalf of the Russian Federation, proposed that the Arctic region countries jointly use the infrastructure of the prospective Express-RV satellite project," the press service reported.

 Scientists Record Volcanic Thunder for the First Time. To the untrained ear, volcanic thunder sounds like the rumble of a plane engine or a distant river. But scientists are really excited about the low hum, clicks and pops that were recorded during a March 2017 eruption at Bogoslof volcano. That's because it's the first time a team has recorded the sound of volcanic thunder. The recordings come from Bogoslof volcano in the Aleutian Islands. Scientists say the recordings are just the beginning of a treasure trove of clues scientists are exploring in the wake of Bogoslof's nine-month eruption.

The Arctic is undergoing unprecedented changes driven by the impacts of climate change, globalization and related political, cultural and biophysical fluxes. The talk presents the works of the Arctic Design Group that foregrounds design in the act of framing and re-imagining the potential futures of the Arctic, while offering ways of re-engaging with environmental phenomena as malleable design media.

Chair of the US Arctic Research Commission Fran Ulmer will discuss "The Rapidly Changing Arctic: Why Does it Matter?" Dr. Steven C. Amstrup will discuss "Current and Future Challenges Facing Polar Bears." There will be a screening of the documentary "Between Earth and Sky."

17th International Congress of Circumpolar Health (ICCH17), August 12-15, 2018 (Copenhagen, Denmark). The ICCH congresses are held every third year in different locations in the circumpolar area and represent the largest scientific meetings worldwide on circumpolar health. The ICCH congresses serve as the primary source of information exchange and scholarly communication in issues relating to circumpolar health. More than 750 participants generally register and participate in each Congress, and more than 400 scientific papers or posters are usually presented.
UArctic Congress 2018, September 3-7, 2018 (Oulu and Helsinki, Finland).
The UArctic Congress 2018 will bring together key UArctic meetings and a science conference into one single gathering, including business meetings of the Council of UArctic, Rectors' Forum, Student Forum, and Thematic Networks & UArctic Institutes Leadership Team. The Congress is an integral part of the Finland's Arctic Council chairmanship program, and open to the public. The event will highlight the themes and priorities of the Finnish chairmanship, including the goals of the United Nations' 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and the Paris Agreement under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.
The second Arctic Biodiversity Congress is hosted by the Conservation of Arctic Flora and Fauna (CAFF), the biodiversity working group of the Arctic Council, and the Ministry of the Environment, Finland. The second Arctic Biodiversity Congress will build on the success of the first Congress, held in 2014 in Trondheim, Norway, and will bring together scientists, policymakers government officials, Indigenous representatives, Traditional Knowledge holders, industry, non-governmental organizations, and others to promote the conservation and sustainable use of Arctic biodiversity.
