Last month, the South Lake Tahoe City Council directed city staff to develop an ordinance to protect Lake Tahoe from polystyrene litter. Disposable foam and plastic products are bad for Lake Tahoe. Since 2015 League volunteers have removed over 5000 pieces of polystyrene litter from the Lake’s shoreline.
By incorporating the League’s suggestions to strengthen the proposed ordinance by including a ban on sales of foam coolers, plates and cups---as well as requiring restaurants to make plastic straws and plastic utensils available only on request---the city has shown its commitment to the Jewel of the Sierra.
