Golf tournament raises $90,000-plus for HEF
On March 19, Batson-Cook Construction hosted the 14th Annual Play Fore Education Golf Tournament at Avila Golf & Country Club, raising more than $90,000 to help students in need.
Since 2004, proceeds from the annual tournament have gone to the Hillsborough Education Foundation to support scholarships, mentoring, free school supplies, classroom projects, recognition for educators and more.

Bristol-Myers Squibb hosts STEM Field Day
On March 8, Bristol-Myers Squibb hosted a STEM Field Day for Hillsborough County students heading to the state STEM Fair. The day was all about giving the students an opportunity to fine-tune their presentation skills for the state fair with the help of Tampa-based BMS employees. The students also got a chance to tour the BMS facility.

UT gallery features Scholastic Art & Writing exhibit
An exhibit at the University of Tampa's Scarfone/Hartley Gallery features art and writing pieces by local middle- and high-school students participating in the 2018 Hillsborough County Region Scholastic Art & Writing Awards
presented by Suncoast Credit Union. The exhibit, which is open to the public, opened March 23 and runs through Wednesday.
Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday-Friday and 1-4 p.m. Saturday.
On Tuesday, regional and national award-winners were honored at a reception in the gallery and awards ceremony in UT's Falk Theatre. Six national winners, along with their teachers, will travel to New York City to attend a ceremony at Carnegie Hall in June.

Amscot customers donate $37,000 to Foundation
Throughout the month of February,
Amscot Financial asked customers to contribute $1 to their local education foundation to provide support for students and teachers when school budgets fall short. With additional donations from Amscot founder Ian MacKechnie and the Tampa-based corporate office, 2018 contributions totaled
$185,805 for education foundations across the state. The
Consortium of Florida Education Foundations works with Amscot to coordinate campaign fund distributions among the education foundations.
The Hillsborough Education Foundation is the proud recipient of about
$37,400 in "Just a Dollar" contributions, which will impact students in need by funding scholarships, mentoring, classroom project funding and school supplies.

Rays deliver school supplies to local kids in need
On March 20, a group of Tampa Bay Rays employees - and special guest Raymond - spent their morning surprising the students and teachers at Crestwood Elementary with "classroom packs" filled with Yoobi school supplies. Included in the group of Rays volunteers were: HEF Board member
Brian Richeson, Vice President of Corporate Partnerships;
Bill Wiener, Vice President of Employee and Community Development;
Jenn Tran, Vice President of Human Resources and Organizational Engagement; and
Stephen Thomas, Executive Director of the Rays Baseball Foundation.

Change a student's life, become a mentor
If you are looking for a meaningful way to give back, consider becoming a mentor to a HCPS middle- or high-school student.
As a mentor, you will meet with your mentee at his or her school weekly throughout the academic year.

Anna Laird | Mentor Coordinator
Responsibilities include:
Coordinating and training volunteer mentors for Take Stock in Children, matching prospective mentors with their mentees and working as a College Success Coach for some of the students in the TSIC program.

What advice would you give to a student who doesn't like doing homework?
Nobody likes to do homework, but homework is a tool that will help you be successful in the future. Think of school as a really long staircase and each assignment you submit is putting you one step closer to achieving your goals!
Who was your favorite teacher and why?
My Algebra II teacher, Ms. Moody. Algebra was my least favorite subject and I really struggled in that class. Ms. Moody took the time to work with me after school a few times a week to ensure I passed. I somehow managed to pass by the skin of my teeth but Ms. Moody celebrated that small success with me and told me how proud she was. Obviously, I wasn't her brightest student but I was certainly her most grateful!
What was your first job?
I worked at a bookstore in high school.
If you could have a super power, what would it be?
Teleportation.
What was your most memorable vacation?
Thailand! I ended up getting my tonsils removed while I was there so that certainly makes it pretty memorable for me (it's a long story). Overall, the food was incredible and I met a lot of wonderful people.
