Refugee Arrivals This Week!
On Monday May 7th, the first of four Eritrean refugees from Israel, sponsored by St. John’s, arrived at Ottawa International Airport, and two more arrived Thursday May 10th, and the arrival of one is still pending. These four Eritrean refugees are all relatives and friends of Bereket Ghebrekidan (who works as a janitorial contractor at St John’s). They have all been sponsored by St. John’s with support from Bereket. The first of the group to arrive was Germay, a young Eritrean cousin, who appeared thrilled to be here, despite an almost 24 hr voyage from Tel Aviv via Toronto. This was the culmination of a 7 year odyssey for Germay, and just the beginning of his settling into a new life here in Canada.
Bereket, and a group representing St. John's RAG (Refugee Assistance Group) were on hand to greet Germay, Monday evening, along with representatives from the American Shapiro Foundation and uOttawa Refugee Hub, both involved with refugee resettlement.
With the arrival of these refugees, RAG will be looking for support from members of St John’s, and would like to thank those who have already pledged help in the form of furniture, time and clothing. If you can help, please email Jill Courtemanche or Claudette Kohut (

Let Us Celebrate Jerusalem Sunday!
Jerusalem Sunday
on May 13, 2018 is an annual church observance to celebrate companionship in God’s mission with the Episcopal Diocese of Jerusalem in Jerusalem, Israel, Palestine, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria. The Diocese is a historic and active member of the Christian, ecumenical and interfaith community of the Middle East. It is home to several thousand Arab Anglicans in thirty parishes and situated in one of the world’s holiest destinations for Christian, Jewish and Muslim pilgrims.
Regrettably, few religious tourists to the Holy Land today encounter Palestinian and other Arab Christians, or visit a parish church, school or hospital.
Jerusalem Sunday
introduces us to the ‘living stones’ of the local Anglican church, to the ancestors of the first Christian communities indigenous to the region. Jerusalem Sunday is an opportunity to meet Arab sisters and brothers in Christ in the Anglican Communion, and hear them talk about discipleship (

The ministries of the Diocese of Jerusalem bring hope, skills, health; a peaceful future to those they serve.
Jerusalem Sunday
is also an opportunity for Anglicans in Canada to send a measure of financial support to these ministries, especially the Jerusalem Princess Basma Centre for Disabled Children (
www.basma-centre.org/
). The Jerusalem Princess Basma Centre provides a wide range of support services to the children and adults of East Jerusalem living with disabilities. Key aspects of its work include programs for children with severe hearing impairment, autism and a mainstreaming school which teach children in integrated classrooms. Jerusalem Sunday offerings will provide support to the Children’s Hydrotherapy Program.

Great news!
The end of the first phase of wall reconstruction is now in sight.
Here is where we are:
• Our new concrete wall is close to completion. Last Friday, the final concrete pour took place, and the formwork is being removed this week.
• Removal of the interior shoring will begin next week.
• A temporary wall, door and ramp will then be built, restoring access from the nave to the washrooms and Parish Hall.
• The outside ramp and door will also be re-opened.
All of this work will be completed by May 19.
We are currently waiting for the permanent interior work (finished wall, floor, new door and ramp) to be quoted on. We are also planning the work to put a brick veneer on the new concrete wall. We will keep you posted on the timing for these next steps.

Summer
Coffee Squad
Members Needed!

Soon (on May 27
th
) we will switch to having coffee time
between
the two morning services. We need people to volunteer please, to go and “pick-up the coffee” from the coffee shop at 8:30 am, and then others could volunteer to take the gear back after the Service.
Just imagine if everyone takes a turn we’ll each of us only have to do it once during the summer season.

Hosted by the All My Relations Working Group of the Diocese of Ottawa, a plenary session led by Melanie Delva (Reconciliation Animator for the Anglican Church of Canada), workshops, and a Cree “Standing Stones Sacred Gathering” worship service. $20 per person.
