A Message from the
Superintendent
|
Dear Lovejoy Community:
The Lovejoy Independent School District will be closed on Friday, March 30th for a holiday/bad weather day. We hope you and your family have a safe and enjoyable long weekend.
We often talk about the athletic successes of our kids, and this edition includes several accomplishments including a District Championship for Boys' Soccer. There are also UIL Academic Contests, and we are proud to share the news of our LHS students winning the District Championship. Be sure to read through the various competitions in which they participated and congratulate the winners.
Please accept my warm wish for a blessed family experience this Easter weekend.

Last week, Willow Springs Middle School, in partnership with the Grant Halliburton Foundation, hosted a community forum, "Focus on Teen Suicide Prevention." During that meeting, the following important information was shared:

Tiwa Aina
is a student at Lovejoy High School, taking a gap year between his high school graduation (at the age of 16) and his first year of college.
Tiwa was recognized as a National Merit Semi-Finalist and AP Scholar with Distinction when he was just 15 years old. He went on to attain perfect SAT scores. He also took the SAT subject tests in Mathematics and Physics, and likewise scored 800 on both. He will sit for two additional AP exams at Lovejoy High School this spring.

Kade Ashley
was the first Lovejoy male athlete to compete in the state powerlifting meet. This year's meet was held this past Saturday in Abilene,Texas. He finished 22nd in the 242 pound class with a total combined weight of 1,440 pounds. Congratulations to Kade on having a great season.

Soccer Secures
Back-to-Back District Championship
|
Last Friday night, the Varsity Boys Soccer team beat Royse City 4-0, scoring all four goals in the second half. Goals were scored by Tyler Loop, Gavin George, Grant Lange, and Kishan Vasal with assists by Gavin George, Diego Rodriguez, and Caleb Toomey. With the win, the Leopards secured back-to-back district championships and a 13-3-4 (10-2-2) record. The Leopards will now advance in the 2018 UIL State Playoffs against the Sulphur Springs Wildcats on Thursday at Wylie Pirate Stadium. We hope to see you there. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
The JV Boys closed out their season with a 1-0 victory over the Bulldogs. The JV also claimed the 15-5A Championship. The JV Leopards final record was 17-1 and eclipsed last year's total of 16 wins.

Congratulations to SCIS 6th grader Kent Iyoki who recently became a USA Fencing National Gold Medalist. Kent participated in the USA National Fencing competition, March North American Cup, which was held for four days in Baltimore, Maryland. He won first place out of the 135 qualified fencers at the contested event of Y12 Men's Epee. Three and a half months remain in the fencing season during which time Kent will work to maintain his #1 USA national ranking.

Jump Rope for Heart

Carson Fox
, a 3rd grade student at Hart Elementary School, is one of the top 60 online fundraisers in the United States for Jump Rope for Heart. In honor of this achievement, the Fox family was invited to attend a recent Mavs game and participate in the "High Five Lineup". Congratulations to Carson for raising $1,110.

Sierra Stammen
, a Lovejoy High School Senior, recently competed in the largest Mounted Archery competition in the United States. Sierra and her horse, Nike, were in the novice division. She placed 1st on the Mamluk, 2nd on the Polish, 4th on the Korean, and earned 4th place novice overall, missing 3rd by 1 point.
Mounted Archery is a growing sport in the United States. Sierra began learning the sport over Thanksgiving Break. She is a founding member of the only Mounted Archery Association of the Americas chapter in North Texas, the Red River Horse Archers. She is looking forward to her second competition this summer in Utah. Congratulations, Sierra.

Dallas Mavericks Classroom Champion
|
Earlier this year, Hart Elementary School 3rd grade teacher Erin Goff was named a Dallas Mavericks teacher of the month. Now through March 30th, community voting is open to vote for the classroom champion teacher of the year. The top five teachers with the most community votes will be awarded $1,000 for themselves and $1,000 for their school. You may

The Foundation for Lovejoy Schools will host its 12th annual Denim and Diamonds Gala and Auction on Saturday, April 7, 2018, at the Marriott at Legacy Town Center in Plano. This year's theme is a Lone Starry Night. Foundation for Lovejoy Schools Chair, Carrie McClure and Co-Chair, Aimee Peay welcome you to a night featuring dinner, entertainment and live auctions.
The Foundation for Lovejoy Schools will host a raffle for three great prizes, which includes:

100K for 100 Years Challenge
Dear Lovejoy Community:
Saturday, we had beautiful weather, and I'm looking forward to warmer weather each day. I was able to enjoy a long bike ride through Lucas, logging those miles as part of our 100K for 100 Years Challenge.
In case you missed it, last Wednesday, we announced the 100K for 100 Years Challenge. One pillar of our Lovejoy Graduate Profile is for students to be engaged in a healthy lifestyle. In an effort to promote this positive quality within the community and celebrate the Lovejoy ISD Centennial, we invite everyone to participate in the 100K for 100 Years Challenge.
As you may recall, the 100K for 100 Years Challenge is an opportunity for participants to log 100 kilometers (about 62 miles) of exercise through any of the following activities: biking, rowing, swimming, running, or walking. The 100K must be logged by May 1st. We encourage everyone to accept the 100K for 100 Years Challenge and log at least 100 kilometers over the next 33 days (an average of just under 2 miles per day).

The Lovejoy Elementary Double L Choir performed the National Anthem at the Allen Americans' Hockey game last Friday night. The 3rd and 4th grade choir sang beautifully, and many members of the choir stayed to cheer the Americans to their win over the Kansas City Mavericks.

LHS Color Guard
The LHS Winter Guard Competed at Marcus High School this past Saturday and placed 6th in the Scholastic A Class. Their next show is April 7th at the North Texas Color Guard Association's State Championships at Flower Mound High School.
The LHS Winter Guard has had a great competitive season against some of the top high schools in North Texas and the country.

Congratulations to the One Act Company of "Violet Sharp" for a great performance at the Bi-District competition. The cast and crew delivered a hauntingly beautiful show and represented their school community and theatre well. Special awards were presented to:

Lovejoy Baseball
Lovejoy Varsity Baseball fell to Forney 7-2 on Monday night at Leopard Park. The Leopards got things moving in the first inning with singles by Jordan Yoder, and Michael DiFiore, and a double on a 3-2 count by Luke Stine, scoring two runs. Forney pulled away with five runs in the third inning on a bases-clearing error. Jacob Terwilliger took the loss. He went five innings, allowing five runs on three hits and striking out four. The Leopards will travel to Forney to complete the series with the Jackrabbits on Thursday. The Leopards are now 13-8 for the season and 3-2 in district play.
The JV Black team had wins over West Mesquite 15-1 and 13-1. They followed up with losses to Prosper 11-7 and to Forney 16-2. The JV Black team will return to action against Forney on Thursday.
The JV Red Team games were rained out last night. The Red team will return to action next Monday at home against Wylie East.

Lovejoy Golf
The Boys Varsity 2 team competed at Shy Creek Ranch this past weekend. It was a strong field of 16 teams. The team shot a two-day total 736, good for a 9th place finish. Jackson Snyder led the Leopards with a two-day total of 182.
On Wednesday, the JV 1 Boys competed at The Rockwall Athletic Club in the Jacket JV Invitational. The team shot a total 349 to take 1st place. Trent King was the low for the JV Leopards, and finished 2nd overall with an 85.
All Lovejoy Golf Teams will participate in the 2018 15-5A District Tournament next Monday and Tuesday at the Rockwall Athletic Club. Good luck to all teams.

Lovejoy Girls Soccer
The Girls Varsity Soccer team closed out their 2018 season with a 1-1 tie, but lost in a shootout to the Lady Bulldogs of Royse City. The girls saw improvement throughout the season and are now moving into their off-season program.
The JV Lady Leopards lost to Royse City 1-0 to close out their 2018 campaign. The JV Leopards also will begin their off season program.

Lovejoy Softball
The Varsity Lady Leopards played the Lady Pirates of Mesquite Poteet this past Friday and suffered a tough loss 11-6. The Lady Leopards bounced back on Saturday at Leopard Park defeating the Argyle Lady Eagles 13-3. The Varsity Lady Leopard defeated Royse City Monday night 5-4. The Varsity will enter the second round of district tied for 3rd place with Royse City and Wylie East. The Varsity overall record is 13-7.
The JV team finished its final tournament of the season in Carrollton this past week. They went 2-1-1. The JV lost 10-4 to the Lady Pirates this past Friday, but picked up another non-district win on Saturday against Argyle. The JV lost to Royse City Monday night 2-1. The JV is now 9-6-1 overall.

Lovejoy Tennis
The Lovejoy Varsity Tennis Team competed in the Allen Eagle Invitational this past Friday and Saturday. The Leopards competed against the top 6-A programs in the metroplex, finishing 10th out of 16 teams. The Leopard Tennis team will travel to Frisco to compete in the Coyote Classic tomorrow. The format of this tournament will be the same as the 15-5A District Tournament, which is scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday April 3rd and 4th at the Allen and Lovejoy Tennis Courts. Good luck to the Leopard Tennis players.

Lovejoy Track
This past weekend, the Leopard Boys Track team competed in the Russ Schuler Invitational in Murphy. The Varsity Boys finished in second place. The JV boys finished 4th in Plano behind Denton Ryan, Plano East, and Allen. Four Leopard Boys Track members participated in the prestigious Jesuit Sheaner Relays on the campus of Dallas Jesuit. Leopards Jake Chamberlin (6th place 200m), James Rainey (2nd place Shot Put), Michael DesJardins (4th place Pole Vault) all had a good day.

Town of Fairview
Call for Artist Entries
The 2018 Fairview Art Show will be held April 28th and 29th in Fairview Town Center. The show will be open for public viewing from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM both days, with an artist reception and award show on Sunday.
Artwork will be judged by a featured juror and will include the following categories: adult artwork, adult photography, student photography, and four student artwork divisions (Early Elementary, Intermediate, Middle, and High School). The show will feature medals and cash prizes up to $2,000.

Hart Elementary Campout Auction
Hart Elementary is excited to announce the HES Campout Online Auction open through April 22nd. Funds raised will benefit the Hart Late Night Leopards Campus Campout. BYOP® (Volleyball Spring Session)
Pre-Registration Ends March 30th
BYOP® Program Overview
: This training program is designed for any volleyball player, no matter what skill or ability level, as long as their goal is to become the best they can be. Parents must be fully dedicated to being actively involved in this program. BYOP® will provide excellent volleyball fundamental skills training, as well as life lessons to both player and parent.
BYOP® Program Details
: Each training session will build upon a solid foundation of all fundamental skills needed to participate in the sport of volleyball. Parents must be engaged in every training session and involved in the home training program involving physical and skills activities.

Safety and Security
Safety and security remain our highest priorities. We have specific plans at each campus in response to a security breach. We continue to consider additional measures to address both the perception of safety, as well as the actual safety on every campus.
We would like to ask for your assistance. If you have information about a threat to the safety of a student, staff member, campus, or the district, we ask you to report it.
SafeSchools is our online safety compliance program, which is specifically designed for school use, incident management, and bullying reporting. This program allows students, staff, and parents to report tips on bullying, harassment, intimidation, weapons, drugs, or other threats to school safety by e-mail, via website, text, or by calling 469.919.5861. This system allows us to stay connected and to prevent incidents before they occur. Staff are immediately notified of every tip, and can effectively track and manage incidents to resolution in this web-based system. Multiple administrators throughout the district monitor submissions to assure entries are addressed in a timely manner. Once a tip is entered, tipsters can easily check on the status of their tip and remain anonymous. School officials are notified through e-mail when tips are created and/or updated.
Posters are displayed in every classroom and hallways throughout each of the Lovejoy campuses, providing information as to how to enter a tip.
If you have information about a threat to our safety, do your part and report it. Please remember, you may remain anonymous.

Gifted and Talented Referrals for 2018-2019
The referral window for gifted and talented services is open for students in grades 1-12 through March 31st.

The Lovejoy Running Club
The Lovejoy Running Club meets every Tuesday and Thursday evening at 6:00 PM near the Duck Pond at Celebration Park. All ages and ability levels are welcome to attend, from novice walkers looking to shed a few pounds, to elite runners gearing up for the next race. 24th Annual Young Masters Exhibition

Congratulations to the following Lovejoy High School visual art students for being selected to participate in the 24th annual Young Masters Exhibition at the Dallas Museum of Art. It is a prestigious honor for these students to have their work selected to hang among the halls of contemporary and historic masterpieces in an exhibition demonstrating the most extraordinary work created within AP Studio Art programs from ten of the areas highest performing high schools.

LHS Band Concert
Tomorrow
The LHS Band will perform a Pre-UIL concert tomorrow night, March 29th, in preparation for their UIL Concert and Sight-reading contest the following week. If you are unable to make it to UIL during the workday, this is a great way to hear the contest concert program. The concert will begin at 7:00 PM in the high school auditorium.

WSMS and LHS Studio Dance Formal Concert
April 5th
The Studio Dance Annual Spring Show will be held on April 5th at 7:00 PM in the LHS Auditorium. The performance will include works by High School and Middle School Dance students. Dances spanning multiple genres and student-choreographed work will be featured. We hope you will join us for this one-night-only show. Admission is free.

LHS Baseball Presents Little Leopard Night
April 6th
The Lovejoy Varsity baseball team will host Little Leopard Night on Friday, April 6th. The team will play Wylie East High School. The Lovejoy Elementary Choir will perform the National Anthem. All elementary students attending will receive free admission into the game, and will have the opportunity to join the Varsity players on the baseball field for the National Anthem. All participants will receive popcorn and baseball pennants. Please arrive at 7:00 PM, as the game will begin at 7:30 PM. For questions, please contact Alicia Pool at 817.999.0719.

Relay for Life is an annual event which will be held at Willow Springs Middle School to raise awareness of cancer and to donate to cancer research. This year's initiative is to bring the Lovejoy community together as a whole to promote a sense of unity and caring. We hope you will save the date of April 6th and join us for Relay for Life.
Elementary Hour
Elementary Hour is an event to help raise money and awareness for cancer. Elementary Hour will be held at Willow Springs Middle School on April 6th from 5:30 PM - 6:30 PM. Join the fun! There will be live music, a bounce house, cookie decorating, sports, and more.

Relay for Life Gallery Wall Opportunity
To encourage participation of students at the elementary and intermediate school levels, the LHS Relay for Life organizers are hosting a coloring page activity. Students may

to print the coloring page and decorate it as creatively as they can. They may then turn the page into the receptionist desk at their campus to receive a pencil, sticker or other prize. The event organizers will use all coloring pages to create a gallery wall for the event, which will represent loving support for those whose lives have been affected by cancer.
Relay for Life Luminarias
Relay for Life is selling Luminarias for the Relay for Life event on April 6th at Willow Springs Middle School. Luminarias honor those whose lives have been affected by cancer. You may dedicate a Luminaria to loved ones who lost their battles with cancer, someone currently battling cancer, or anyone who has overcome cancer. When you attend the Relay event, you will see the Luminarias placed around the track, decorated with names and sometimes messages to whom they are dedicated. Luminarias are $10. LHS Choir Concert
April 9th
The LHS Choir Pre-UIL Concert will be held on Monday, April 9th at 7:00 PM at the First Baptist Church of McKinney. All six UIL choirs will perform their concert music in a program spanning the centuries of great choral classics. Many languages will be represented, including Latin, Gaelic, Polish, Italian, French, Hindi, and English. Admission is free.

LHS Softball Presents Future Leopard Night
April 13th
The Lady Leopards Softball Team will host Future Leopard Night on Friday, April 13th. The team will play Wylie East with a 5:00 PM start for JV and a 7:00 PM start for Varsity. Planned activities include a candy raffle during both games, joining the varsity players on the field for the National Anthem, a keepsake varsity poster for all elementary students, an autograph session following the varsity game, and other surprises. Bring your softballs to have them signed by players before and after the games. Admission will be free for all elementary students. Help the team fill the stands and cheer the Lady Leopards on to victory.

Treasured Vessels Foundation
May 10th
The Treasured Vessels Foundation (TVF) is a local, non-profit which assists adolescent girls who have been recovered from domestic sex trafficking. TVF is building a secure community of tiny homes that will provide 24/7 therapeutic programing, with an emphasis in trauma-specific care. The program provides the tools these children need to develop a vision for a new healthy, happy and independent life.
You are invited to partner with TVF on May 10th at the Allen Event Center for a benefit concert featuring Emerald City Band and Lovejoy band "Friday Night School". You may purchase tickets at the box office or through Ticketmaster.
