Committee Update

Greetings SACSA Family from the Vice President of Member Relations and the awesome volunteers leading our member relations programs. I have the distinct privilege of leading a great team of SACSA volunteers that are working hard to connect our members through creative and ongoing programming. Many of our programs occur during our annual conference. However, we have several opportunities throughout the year for volunteers to get involved and for our members to connect. We hope that you will consider being part of our team. Below you will find updates from each of our areas.  Check out what we are up to and how you can be involved!

Multicultural Awareness Committee Update: Since the 2017 SACSA Conference in Chattanooga, TN, the MAC Committee has been thinking of ways to be more innovative, diverse, and meaningful, regarding the functions and activities that we put on. In the upcoming months leading into the conference, the committee will be thinking outside the box to make sure we provide opportunities for everyone to get involved and contribute to the development of conference attendees. If you would like to volunteer to assist with MAC activities, please contact  Dashan Axson-Lawrence.

SACSA's Newest Update: We recently selected our committee leadership team. Please join me in congratulating these volunteer leaders!
  • Alli Lake, Volunteer Pipeline Workgroup Lead
  • Jess Lancaster, Travel Grant Workgroup Lead
  • Brittany Scurry, Non-Conference Planning Workgroup Lead
  • Ashley Simmons, Conference Planning Workgroup Lead
  • Brandon Harris, SACSA Connections Liaison
  • Casey Terrell, Graduate Student/New Professional Orientation
  • Lindsey Woods, Case Study Competition
We are gearing up to host a number of SACSA Socials again across the region last summer! The committee hosted three Socials in major cities across the region and are looking to expand this summer. If you are interested in hosting a SACSA Social, please contact Brittany Scurry. If you would like to volunteer to assist with SACSA Newest activities, please contact Fred Tugas at.

Non-Conference Programming Comittee: The non-conference programming committee is pleased to partner with the One Love Foundation to host a webinar in April focused on healthy relationships and the educational programming opportunities offered by One Love. The One Love Foundation offers a variety of platforms to raise awareness about relationship violence and healthy relationships. You can check out their offerings and mission by visiting their website. As always, we are looking for members of the SACSA community to host webinars or lead discussions regarding trends in higher education. If you presented at SACSA, SEAHO, NASPA, or another recent conference, please consider sharing your presentation again with the SACSA community. Please visit this link to submit a proposal!  If you would like to volunteer to assist with non-conference activities, please contact: Kristie Gover.

SACSA Connections: Hello SACSA family! The revamped and revitalized SACSA Connections Committee wants you to know what's coming up for the 2018 year! We are going to bring a new meaning to "Mentorship" and what that looks like SACSA! Please keep your eyes open for further updates! If you have any questions or if you're interested in learning more about the committee please don't hesitate to contact me! "Mentoring is a brain to pick, an ear to listen, and a push in the right direction." If you would like to volunteer to assist with mentoring activities, please contact Brittany Jackson

Graduate Preparation Faculty Liaison: It is a privilege to serve as the SACSA Faculty Liaison. Harriet Collins, UTK CSP graduate student, and I are working on a listing of all the graduate preparation programs in the SACSA region. Our goal is to have a page on the SACSA website with all graduate preparation programs listed and a link to each program's site. We plan to have this submitted by the end of the spring semester. If you would like to volunteer to assist with faculty or graduate prep activities, please contact Dorian L. McCoy.

We look forward to serving you and hope you will consider joining our team!

Alli Lake
SACSA Members Highlight

Alli Lake
Assistant Director for Leadership Education
University of Kentucky

A member since 2015, Alli's SACSA journey began at the annual conference in Greenville, SC as a graduate student. She immediately felt welcomed, supported, and inspired, and knew SACSA would become her professional home. With the encouragement of her supervisors, she got involved with the SACSA's Newest committee and presented multiple sessions at the conference in Jacksonville. Alli made some valuable contacts within SACSA from the University of Kentucky, where she would ultimately earn a position in Leadership Education following graduation from the University of Louisville. As a new professional, SACSA continues to support Alli by providing a community of colleagues she can call upon when needed, and numerous resources. Additionally, SACSA has given her the opportunity to give back to her profession. She is currently in her third year as a SACSA's Newest member and is excited to develop new opportunities for members at the graduate student and new professional level. Alli plans to continue her work in leadership development, as she loves working with student leaders to assist them in developing the skills needed to be successful. She recently became a Gallup certified Strengths coach to better assist her in inspiring students through leadership education.

Brian Bourke
Dr. Brian Bourke
Assistant Professor, Postsecondary Education Educational Studies, Leadership & Counseling in the College of Education & Human Services
Murray State University

Dr. Bourke is a recipient of the Joe Buck Service Award, which recognizes long-term SACSA members who demonstrate exceptional commitment to the Association. Dr. Bourke's SACSA story began about 15 years ago as a member of the Research and Assessment committee. In 2013, he became an associate editor for the College Student Affairs Journal, eventually moving up to senior editor in 2017. Social justice and assessment are major topics of interest for Dr. Bourke, especially as they relate to our work in student affairs. You can learn more about his research and scholarly publications on his website (drbrianbourke.com). When asked if anyone in SACSA influenced his decision to get involved in the Association, Dr. Bourke pointed to Tony Cawthon who serves as a good role model in giving back to the student affairs profession. Dr. Bourke's advice to other SACSA members is to simply pay attention to how persons in the Association come to be recognized. It's not necessarily because of the official roles they hold in the Association, rather it about the work they are doing at their member institutions. SACSA is that place where professionals come together to celebrate accomplishments, but also to learn from the examples our members are setting at their own institutions.

Volunteer Survey

Dear SACSA family:

We need your help!

In an effort to better understand all of the various volunteer opportunities that exist within SACSA, we are developing a database of the volunteer positions and the needed requirements for each position. We hope that you will assist us by completing this very short survey that asks you to describe the volunteer position in your area. Please complete an individual survey for each position you have reporting to you in your area. We appreciate your assistance with this project. We are looking for current and past volunteers to complete the questionnaire.

Thanks for all you do!

Don Stansberry & Jessica Wildfire
