Acute Effects of Aerobic Exercise on Cognitive Flexibility in Kids w/ ADHD
[Source:  Your Therapy Source]

Journal of Attention Disorders published research investigated the acute effects of aerobic exercise on cognitive flexibility in children with ADHD along with heart rate variability.  Using a cross-over design, 36 participants (18 children with ADHD and 18 neurotypical peers) completed cognitive assessments following exercise (20-min moderately intense cycling) and a physically inactive control condition. Behavioral performance was assessed using the Alternate Uses task and heart rate variability was recorded via electrocardiography during the cognitive task.  Cognitive flexibility is generally understood as the ability to adjust one's behavior to changing task demands and allows a change of perspectives.

Autism-Related Challenges Persist Well Into Adulthood
[Source:  Disability Scoop]

As adults with autism mature and move into middle age, they are finding it difficult to live independently, hold down jobs and sustain relationships, researchers say.
A new study is providing a glimpse into the daily lives of adults with autism as they hit their 30s and 40s, a time period that's traditionally received little attention from researchers looking at the developmental disorder.

Patients Living Longer with DMD Pose New Challenge for Caregivers
[Source:  Medical X-Press]

Diagnostic and treatment advances are helping patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy-one of nine major types of muscular dystrophy that affects males-live into their 30s and beyond, raising challenges in such areas as education, vocation, levels of independence, personal relationships, emotional health, and intimacy. To address these shifting circumstances, as well as reflect promising new treatment options, new guidelines aimed at physicians who care for DMD patients have recently been issued.

Childhood Aggression Linked to Deficits in Executive Function
[Source;  Science Daily]

A new study finds that deficits in executive function - a measure of cognitive skills that allow a person to achieve goals by controlling their behavior - predicts later aggressive behavior. The study, published in open-access journal Frontiers in Behavioral Neuroscience, shows that primary school children with lower executive function were more likely to show physical, relational and reactive aggression in later years, but not proactive aggression. The increased aggression - which was observed in both boys and girls - may be partly due to an increased tendency for anger in these

Brain Mechanism Involved in Language Learning
[Source: Science Daily]

Psychologists found that when we learn the names of unfamiliar objects, brain regions involved in learning actively predict the objects the names correspond to. The brain tests these predictions just as scientists would test a scientific theory.

Scientists Illuminate Mechanism at Play in Learning
[Source: Science Daily]

The process we call learning is, in fact, a well-orchestrated symphony of thousands of molecular reactions, but the exact interplay between these reactions remains largely unknown. Now, researchers at the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University (OIST) have modeled the molecular basis of learning in the cerebellum, a part of the brain that receives sensory input and coordinates voluntary movements.

My husband's job often takes him to exciting places around the world. We're always excited to hear his amazing stories when he comes back home.

The kids are especially excited to see if he brings back something for them too!
His most recent trip was to a small city in Rwanda, Africa. He brought back a hand  drum that kids use a lot over there.

Bubble Wrap Letter Recognition Activity
[Source:  No Time For Flashcards]

Working on letter recognition should be fun and largely based on a child's interest in preschool, what I mean by that is if children are interested in letters, which many are at this age, teachers should actively fund fun ways to capitalize on that without forcing it at too young an age. This letter recognition activity does just that. This activity used the novelty of bubble wrap to attract and invite little ones to engage. The wonderful thing about this activity is that you can adjust it to any child or group. For younger children having their first initial ( often the first letter they recognize) instead of the whole alphabet is a great option, and for older children who are starting to spell words, you can use this as more of a word search.

Fingertip Sphere Breathing for Self Regulation & Calming
[Source:  Omazing Kids]

I learned this technique during one of the webinars in the Preschool Mindfulness Summit in January. It was amazing to see how well it worked with one of my patients who has Autism (and possibly OCD and Explosive Disorder). This child has a very short fuse and when he explodes it is painful for everyone including him. We had tried several different strategies to help him learn self-regulation and self-calming skills with little success. The issue was in that explosive moment he was too out of control to use any strategies.

OT Corner: Vestibular System Tools and Toys
[Source:  Pre-K Pages]

The vestibular system is all about balance and movement, or spatial awareness. One of the seven different systems under the sensory processing umbrella, the vestibular system helps children use their hands, eyes, and ears together to develop spatial awareness.

These tools are perfect for helping your kids develop balance and spatial awareness skills in Preschool and Kindergarten classrooms.

School Psych Corner:  In High School, the Kids Are Not All Right
[Source:  Edutopia]

I lost my first student to suicide not long ago. The student was no longer in my class at the time, nor even at the school, but I was flooded with the expected surge of feelings: overwhelming sadness, periodic despair, compulsive frame-by-frame replays of our every interaction. I felt the loss deeply. It was unspeakably tragic-for the student's friends and family, for me, and for the world I'd hoped the student would help shape.

In the past year, she completed her doctoral studies where she used phenomenological methods to seek to understand the lived experience of speaking with/through a speech generating device. Kathy is currently working as a consultant to schools and school districts across Alberta focusing primarily on children and youth with complex communication needs.

SLP Corner: Addressing Difficult Behavior in Speech Therapy
[Source: Bilinguistics]

We have all had the experience where our intervention is less productive because of difficult behaviors in speech therapy.  Here is a behavior system that I have found to be successful in group settings.  If you laminate the chart at the bottom, you can use it across multiple sessions with dry erase markers.  This is how it works:
