DEAR PARENTS,

The heartbreaking event that recently took place in Parkland, Florida, provides another important reminder of the crucial responsibility the physical safety of your children presents.

I assure you that the Board, faculty, and staff of St. Teresa's Academy take this responsibility very seriously, and have precautions and a plan in place to prevent and/or react in the case of a crisis.

Current security measures include:
  • An extensive Crisis Plan is in place, which covers multiple scenarios and potential outcomes.
  • Practice drills (including lockdowns and active shooter training) are regularly performed.
  • A security officer is present on campus every school day and at school-related events.
  • School entrances are passcode protected.
  • An emergency door locking system that will secure classroom and office doors from the inside will be be purchased and installed throughout campus.
  • Lines of communication are open with surrounding neighbors and neighborhood associations to stay informed of suspicious people/activities and area security risks.
  • In case of emergency and evacuation, students are instructed to gather at the Country Club United Methodist Church at the corner of 57th Street and Wornall Road.
Please remind your daughters to be vigilant about their surroundings, to use the buddy system, and to keep their cars locked.

I pray our Crisis Plan will never have to be put to the test and that all in our community remain safe. Thank you for your support.

Parent Book Club Discussion
Monday, March 5, 6:00 p.m.
Zahner Lounge
All STA parents are invited to join the Parent Book Club discussion of the book titled, Some of My Best Friends are Black by Tanner Colby. The chosen book offers a profoundly honest portrait of race in America. In a book that is part reportage, part history, part social commentary, Tanner Colby explores why the civil rights movement ultimately produced such little true integration in schools, neighborhoods, offices, and churches - the very places where social change needed to unfold.

The Club will meet March 5 for a discussion of the book moderated by Michelle Wimes, STA Board President and Director of Professional Development and Inclusion at a Kansas City law firm, and Mary Shortino, STA alumna and Youth Services Information Specialist at the Johnson County Library.

Walk Out for Gun Control
O n Wednesday, March 7, in solidarity with other Kansas City area high schools, the Human Dignity, Cultural Diversity and Social Justice Clubs are arranging a scheduled walk out for gun control as a result of the many historical shootings on school campuses.

Students are encouraged to use their own discretion whether or not to participate. Those not participating may go to the auditorium.  Students will not be considered absent during the walk out.  The event will take place on the Quad and may include speakers such as local representatives from the State of Missouri or United States legislators.

Spring Cleaning!
Moms & daughters clean out your lingerie drawers and help a good cause by donating gently used bras to the STA Book Club's Bras + Bucks drive to support Free The Girls.

During the week of March 19-23, drop off your bras and dollars off in the front offices of M&A and Donnelly or in the Library (D210).

Free The Girls collects clean, gently used, good condition bras and sport bras and ships them to countries such as Uganda, Mozambique and El Salvador. Women in these countries are able to make a living selling the bras and stay out of human trafficking activities. Money donations help fund shipping costs. For more information, contact Carrie Jacquin or visit www.freethegirls.org.

Here's how it works: Students were given ten remittance envelopes to fill out with valid names and addresses of family and/or friends who would be willing to support St. Teresa's Academy. The envelopes will provide event details and a donation request.

To participate in the event: Your daughter will need to 1) address and return to STA a minimum of five envelopes OR 2) buy out of the program with an $80 donation. Students who return all ten envelopes will win great prizes!

NEW Class Challenge This Year
The class with the highest percentage of participation wins a Pre-Walk Tailgate in the Quad and gets to douse their "teacher of choice" with colored chalk!

Addressed remittance envelopes should be returned to STA in the large white student envelope and dropped in the Walk-of-Fame bins in the front halls of M&A or Donnelly. Please remind your daughter to circle her shirt size. Rain date:  Monday, April 23.

We look forward to another very fun day for the students and a successful fundraiser for the school! Those not participating in the fundraiser will go to study hall during the event.

Second Annual Women's Symposium Enlightened Students

On February 23, freshman and sophomore students spent a powerful day learning from experts on a wide range of social justice and women's issues. The event was kicked off by keynote speaker, Regina Kort. Regina is the daughter of Holocaust survivor, Sonia Warshawski, who is featured in the acclaimed film Big Sonia. Sonia had been scheduled to appear, but came down with the flu. Regina enthralled her audience with stories, video clips, and photos from Sonia's harrowing life.

After the question and answer section of the keynote address, students chose four breakout sessions to attend. Students selected among 26 breakout sessions led by 35 experts from a wide range of organizations and corporations. Topics included Racial Justice, led by Derecka Purnell from the Advancement Project and Jenee Osterheldt of the Kansas City Star (pictured above); Restorative Justice, with STA alumna Kayla Kratofil; and Equal Pay, conducted by Favel Jens of the Women's Foundation of Greater Kansas City.  Students, presenters, and faculty expressed that it was a thought-provoking and educational experience.
