April 2 (Monday)    6:30 pm
Lecture: Of Cold Hands, Blind Eyes, and White Hair: Physical and Psychological Aging in the Operas of Giuseppe Verdi
Francesco Izzo, University of Southampton, co-director of the American Institute for Verdi Studies at NYU, explores the theme of old age in Verdi's operas from 1839 to 1867, drawing in particular on Oberto, conte di San Bonifacio, Nabucco, I lombardi alla prima crociata, Ernani, I due Foscari, Rigoletto, La traviata, and Don Carlos. In so doing, he identifies instances where the depiction of old age seems to express a continuum with established stereotypes (such as fatherhood and metaphors of family honor). The discussion draws on close reading of verbal and musical texts, as well as on visual evidence and other materials. This lecture is being given in memory of Casa Italiana founder Baroness Mariuccia Zerilli-Marimò. In English.

Roberto Gatto Quartet
Roberto Gatto is one of the few Italian musicians who does not need any introduction: "drummer" of jazz par excellence, he has been an ambassador of Italian jazz in the world since his early career. Gatto returns to the purely acoustic sound supported by the presence, on stage, of three of the best musicians of the current Italian jazz scene: Alessandro Lanzoni, piano, Matteo Bortone and Alessandro Presti, trumpet. The recording project presents a variety of sounds from different cultures, rhythms and atmospheres with a repertoire composed both of original songs and standards.

Simultaneously, the film narrates the story of Thabo and Rocco, victims of "football slavery" who leave Italy together to find the way back to Thabo's village in Africa. The difficult subject of exploitation and trafficking of children is balanced with an inspiring story of youth's spirit of adventure, hopeful innocence and trusting affections. The Agita Monologues
The life and times of a young woman who was very different from everyone else in her oddball yet loving Italian-American family. Being the youngest of four, comedienne/singer Maryann Maisano viewed the antics going on in her Italian-born parents home from a very different perspective than her siblings. They all grew up with a commuter parking lot as their backyard, numerous taxis in the driveway, taxi phones ringing at dinner, and a very charismatic father who had a way with the ladies. Her siblings seemed to think Maryann was the peculiar one, that is, until the tables turned. Maryann's tale is one of passion, skewered love, and the unthinkable for an Italian family therapy. This is a story of how detaching from the very things we love and striving to fulfill our dreams can save us. A hilarious story, ripe with intrigue, poignancy, dysfunction, infidelity, but no murder yet!  Written & Performed by Maryann Maisano, Producer & Headliner of The Italian Chicks Comedy & Variety Show.

Alberto Savinio
Hailed by poet and critic Guillaume Apollinaire as the paragon of a Renaissance man, Savinio was not only an exceptional visual artist and member of the Parisian avant-garde, but also a gifted pianist, composer, musicologist, set designer, critic, and writer. Yet despite his achievements, Savinio, the younger brother of Giorgio de Chirico, is today virtually unknown outside of Italy. This exhibition features 25 rarely seen works by the artist, focusing on paintings produced after his move to Paris in 1926. The exhibited works are characterized by Savinio's vivid color palette, his fantastical interpretation of mythology and voyage, and his eccentric vision of landscape.
